Martin Schaub is a songwriter, conductor and one of Sweden's most sought-after orchestral arrangers with assignments for, among others, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on his CV. Swedish artists he has worked with are Sarah Klang, Anna von Hausswolff, Miriam Bryant, Seinabo Sey and Laleh, several in projects with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Akademische Festouvertüre Op 80 At age 60, Brahms was widely considered the greatest living composer. He became an honorary citizen of the city of his birth, Hamburg, and was honored with a commemorative medal from the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. He was called to Cambridge to receive an honorary doctorate from the university, but Brahms was not keen on for these kinds of honors, so he declined. It was easier for him to accept a similar offer from the somewhat more anonymous Breslau, and as a thank you he wrote the Academic Festival Overture, based on famous German student songs. It all starts in mournful C minor and then follows the songs "Wir hatten gebaut ein stattliches Haus", "Landesvaters", "Fuchslieder" and finally (the well-known among students) "Gaudeamus igitur". Brahms has hardly been known as a jubilant composer, and nowhere in his output is one to find more exuberant C major tuning than in this overture's glittering final bars. STIG JACOBSSON

Haydn Variations Op 56 Like Beethoven, Brahms was very interested in the variation form and stands out as one of the foremost composers in this area. The theme for the Haydn variations is a chorale called St Antoni, followed by eight variations and a grand finale. A good friend of Brahms, Karl Ferdinand Pohl, had brought some unknown music to Brahms in 1870, including some scores or divertimenti for wind orchestra. One partita contained the Antonius Chorale, which Brahms fell in love with and noted in his sketchbook. At first it was believed to have been composed by Haydn, but researchers increasingly believe that it was possibly one of Haydn's students, probably Ignatz Pleyel, who composed the partita. The theme is based on a hymn that pilgrims used to sing on St. Anthony's Day. The Brahms work is available in two versions, one for two pianos and one for orchestra. Brahms entered the orchestral version in his catalog first, but it was the piano version that first appeared in print. The duo version was first performed by Brahms himself and Clara Schumann. The orchestral version was first performed in November 1873 by the Vienna Philharmonic under Brahms.

The ensemble works both as part of the Gothenburg Symphony Choir in major symphonic works performed together with the Gothenburg Symphony, and as an independent ensemble under the direction of Katie Thomas. GSVE is a group of experienced and versatile singers, who perform varied programs and explore a wide repertoire, from medieval music to newly commissioned works. The ensemble has previously collaborated with, among others, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra and the Barockakademin Göteborgs Symfoniker and performs regular vocal programs both in Gothenburg's Concert Hall and around the Västra Götaland region.

The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir has participated in concerts in, among other places, the Royal Albert Hall and Canterbury Cathedral in England, as well as participated with the Gothenburg Symphony in the annual music festival in the Canary Islands and on a tour to China.

Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) Flute Concerto Nielsen tailored the music to the intended musician, and since the flutist Holger Gilbert-Jespersen was a tasteful and elegant man with a Gallic temperament, his concert was bright and chamber-musical, but with unexpected outbursts. The music is characterized by vitality and good mood. In a typical Nielsen way, the music eventually finds its way to the right key. Originally it was in D major, but immediately after the premiere on 21 October 1926 at the Salle Gaveau in Paris, the composer reworked the concerto and had it end in E major. The flute has then been out on many tonal excursions and now seems to have difficulty finding home; by chance, the boozy bass trombone enters the game and happens to be right - and therefore also takes credit from the soloist. One readily agrees with the Swiss composer Arthur Honegger, who was present at the premiere of the concert: "It has small dimensions but is filled with beautiful combinations, such as the dialogues between flute and timpani or bassoon. It is piquant, flowing and not without humor."

Born in Helsinki, Petri Sakari has since 1983 had regular engagements with Finnish orchestras such as the Vaasa City Orchestra, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Lahti Symphony Orchestra. Following successful appearances outside Finland, Petri Sakari joined the Iceland Symphony Orchestra as chief conductor in 1988, continuing in various roles up to 1998, also making a number of acclaimed recordings. He was chief conductor of the Lohja Symphony Orchestra from 1993 to 1999, principal guest conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra from 1995 to 1997, and music director and chief conductor of the Gävle Symphony Orchestra from 2000 to 2004. He has conducted opera and ballet performances at opera houses of Finland, Sweden and Iceland, and also guest conducted orchestras throughout Europe and in São Paolo, Singapore and Mexico City.

Andreas van Tol (formerly Hansson) was the 2021 winner of the Neeme Järvi prize. He made his debut as an opera conductor in 2023 with the critically acclaimed production Die Zauberflöte: The Next Generation together with Opera2Day and de Theateralliantie on tour throughout the Netherlands. Andreas van Tol has conducted a large number of international orchestras, including Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, Orchester de Chambre de Lausanne, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Het Residentieorkest and Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra. He has been principal conductor of Polstjärnepriset for several years and was appointed as the orchestra's Artistic Director in 2023.

Emilia Hoving has emerged as one of the most exciting young Finnish conductors today. In 2025/26, Hoving begins her three-year tenure as Associate Conductor with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, she makes her debut with the Bamberg Symphony and with the Hallé Orchestra, and returns to conduct the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony, Malmo Symphony, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. In 2025 she also made her mainstage opera debut, conducting Opera North in several performances of The Magic Flute. Emilia Hoving conducted the final concert at Side by Side in 2025 and 2024 and the school concert Bubblor at the Gothenburg Symphony in 2023. In the summer of 2022, she made her Tokyo debut at Suntory Hall as conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony and her UK debut at the Philharmonia, where she has now become a regular guest. Hoving has conducted many works by living (especially Finnish) composers and gave the Australian premiere of Missy Mazzoli's Procession at the Adelaide Festival. Juan Zurutuza is a pianist trained in Mexico and the Netherlands. He studied with Rian de Waal at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague from 2001-2008. Since 2022, Juan Zurutuza is pianist in the Gothenburg Symphony. Richard Wagner (1813-1883) Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde The musical language of the opera Tristan und Isolde (1859) is sometimes considered the beginning of musical modernism. Tristan’s harmonic language, filled with linguering and unresolved dissonances, not only realizes the sexual tension between the opera’s two central characters, but also heralds the liberation from the limitations of tonality. The famous “Tristan chord” is an unresolved dissonance, an academic way of saying that it “leads to something”. The prelude exemplifies Wagner’s forward-looking view of both harmony and the question of musical form. Here Wagner’s Leitmotif technique, i.e. central themes that correspond to characters and ideas, is also developed. Something that became completely self-evident in film music many decades later. Isolde has just arrived and finds Tristan dead as the famous piece Liebestod (Love's Death) begins. She wants to sink into unconsciousness and finally consummate her love for Tristan by following him into death.
