In Serenade for tenor, horn and strings from 1943, English poets from the 15th to 19th centuries contribute texts that revolve around the night. Six songs as both rest and threat. Two horn solos frame the work and the natural tones create with their – to the unaccustomed – almost false-sounding intervals, an ambivalent sound space between light and darkness. Clearly chiseled movements characterize the serenade. This applies to both the almost parading Nocturne and the more ghostly Dirge, with its trait of mechanical inexorability. Britten works sparingly, and often ties the motif to the horn, where a contrapuntal dialogue arises between horn and tenor soloist. The harmonics move freely, tension is created through shifts, not through traditional resolution. Perhaps the restraint and the mix of threat and hope are the composer's way of relating to the horrors that unfolded in the midst of a burning war. Such were the conditions when Britten wrote his work, in an England where the concept of night was synonymous with fearful anticipation of the rumble of approaching German bombers.

With his broad musical experience (he played cornet, percussion and violin), Nielsen has always been popular with orchestras: he is a "musicians' composer" whose parts are almost always rich in content and challenging. The Fourth Symphony (1916) is dense and intense, but there are also peaceful islands of recovery. The symphony opens with a powerful, completely surprising first movement, moves through a graceful allegretto (in which the wind instruments initially dominate) and a glowing third movement before ending with a blazing finale in which two drummers duel violently - incited and supported by the rest of the orchestra. This is how Nielsen himself described the symphony: "The title (The Inextinguishable) suggests something that only music itself can express: the elementary will to live. /.../ Life is indelible and inextinguishable, yesterday, today and tomorrow, life was, is and will exist in struggle, conflict, generation and annihilation."

As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. Denmark's national composer began work on his third symphony in 1910. He was in an explosive creative phase, possibly triggered by a marriage in crisis, with underlying frustration and guilt. The symphony is one of his most life-affirming works. Around the same time, Nielsen developed close ties to Gothenburg. Here he conducted several times and found an artistic soulmate in the Symphony Orchestra's chief conductor Wilhelm Stenhammar. The two shared both aesthetics and ideals: music that speaks directly, organically and freely – unbound by the heavy veils of romanticism. Sinfonia Espansiva begins forcefully with several unison orchestral thrusts, as if Nielsen wants to open the gates to a new room, where pent-up energy can swirl freely. The music with a driving motoric quality, especially in the strings – constantly in motion, constantly on the move – is reflected in the concluding fourth movement, but is then less heroic and more dance-like and playful. Drive and melody that constantly expands, that is what Nielsen might think of as the meaning of his invented word espansiva. The slow second movement is the heart of the work – a lyrical idyll where two voices, soprano and baritone, emerge in wordless dialogue. What do the voices want to convey to each other? Probably love and happiness.

Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) Flute Concerto Nielsen tailored the music to the intended musician, and since the flutist Holger Gilbert-Jespersen was a tasteful and elegant man with a Gallic temperament, his concert was bright and chamber-musical, but with unexpected outbursts. The music is characterized by vitality and good mood. In a typical Nielsen way, the music eventually finds its way to the right key. Originally it was in D major, but immediately after the premiere on 21 October 1926 at the Salle Gaveau in Paris, the composer reworked the concerto and had it end in E major. The flute has then been out on many tonal excursions and now seems to have difficulty finding home; by chance, the boozy bass trombone enters the game and happens to be right - and therefore also takes credit from the soloist. One readily agrees with the Swiss composer Arthur Honegger, who was present at the premiere of the concert: "It has small dimensions but is filled with beautiful combinations, such as the dialogues between flute and timpani or bassoon. It is piquant, flowing and not without humor."

With his broad musical experience (he played cornet, percussion and violin), Nielsen has always been popular with orchestras: he is a "musicians' composer" whose parts are almost always rich in content and challenging. The Fourth Symphony (1916) is dense and intense, but there are also peaceful islands of recovery. The symphony opens with a powerful, completely surprising first movement, moves through a graceful allegretto (in which the wind instruments initially dominate) and a glowing third movement before ending with a blazing finale in which two drummers duel violently - incited and supported by the rest of the orchestra. This is how Nielsen himself described the symphony: "The title (The Inextinguishable) suggests something that only music itself can express: the elementary will to live. /.../ Life is indelible and inextinguishable, yesterday, today and tomorrow, life was, is and will exist in struggle, conflict, generation and annihilation."

Allegro Andante Vivace non troppo Johannes Brahms composed his Double Concerto for violin, cello and orchestra in the summer of 1887. It was his last work for orchestra and, despite being only 30 minutes long, is a truly magnificent work. Brahms himself called the work “entertaining” and a “joke” – words that a listener finds difficult to reconcile with such an intense and powerful concert. The usual understanding of Brahms’ Double Concerto is that its serious appearance goes back to the conflict that arose between Brahms and his friend, the violinist Joseph Joachim, regarding an affair between Joachim’s wife and Brahms’ publisher. The concerto – which was premiered by Joachim and the cellist Robert Hausmann with Brahms conducting – is said to have been an outstretched hand after several years of silence. An emotional melody in the cello turns gently towards the violinist, and in the end the two are united. The double concerto received mixed reviews. Some, such as Clara Schumann, considered it lacking in warmth. Today it stands as one of the last great concertos of the 19th century, dating back to Mozart and Beethoven – and a unique example of Brahms' late style of composition for full orchestra, in which he also uses the full range of the solo instruments.
