Erik Risberg was employed as a pianist in the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra from 1995 to 2023, also performing on organ, harpsichord and other keyboard instruments. He regularly performed as a chamber musician, including in a piano duo with Bengt Forsberg. Erik Risberg has also been a valued teacher of musical performance at the Gothenburg Academy of Music and Drama for many years and also gives introductions at the Symphony Orchestra's concerts.

Beethoven really had to struggle with his music. He worked meticulously on every detail, and the work is still extant in his sketchbooks. Even the seemingly obvious opening of the Fifth Symphony, the knocking on the door of fate that immediately seizes the listener and which seems to be such an unshakable thought, undergoes a series of transformations in the sketches that are difficult to understand in retrospect. The energetic scherzo transition in the finale has undergone countless phases of development. The sketches also show that Beethoven originally did not at all envision a finale in a triumphant major, but in a minor key. Beethoven's Fifth is certainly worthy of all the admiring attention it receives. It is the result of the tribulations of a hard-working genius.

The story of Robert Schumann and the piano unfolded over the course of his entire life—initially with passion and joy, and later, amidst depression and physical (as well as psychological) challenges, pushing him to the breaking point. In a famous essay from 1839, he muses on the future direction of the piano concerto as a genre. Schumann asks himself which genius will succeed in transforming the interaction between piano and orchestra from a mere circus act into a true symbiosis of sonic splendor. From the very first notes, it is as if we are hearing the blueprint for what the piano concerto would become in the century to follow. After the orchestra’s opening unison, the piano descends in cascading runs—framed by the orchestra—before the music settles into the theme’s sweet phrasing, passed between oboe and bassoon to the piano, and then carried forward by the strings into the second theme. Schumann’s great achievement with this concerto is the way he unites orchestra and piano; they become part of a shared, unified sound. The premiere of the complete concerto took place in Dresden in 1845, with his wife, Clara Schumann, as the soloist.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Overture to Le nozze di Figaro The task of an overture is to create anticipation and excitement and to give a foreshadowing of the dramatic events of the opera. Mozart signals joy and comedy with the high tempo, but the dark tones also let us suspect that this is an opera with serious elements. The frame plot is one of the most common in Mozart's time: the struggle between the lord - the count - and the servant, where the latter ultimately draws the longest straw. When the overture's humming flight of bumblebees has come to an end, the curtain rises, and we meet the servant Figaro and his fiancée Susanna in the process of finding the best place for their new bed - they are getting married.

Dawn Sunday Morning Mooonlight Storm Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes, which premiered in 1945, is one of the most central works in British opera of the 20th century. It tells the story of a fisherman who causes the death of his apprentices, is harassed by the small town population and loses his mind. Between the acts, Britten inserted four orchestral interludes that can be performed as a standalone orchestral suite, the Four Sea Interludes. They are titled Dawn, Sunday Morning, Moonlight and Storm. The four interludes depict not only the nature outside the small coastal village where the opera is set, but also the psychological content of the opera and the title character's struggle against society and his inner demons. In Britten's music, the sea is both concrete and symbolic, a force of nature and a mirror for human loneliness, alienation and conflict – something that resonated deeply with him as a homosexual in a time of condemnation. With his sensitive tone language, Britten creates an atmospheric soundscape, and its rich, expansive music is reminiscent of Debussy's La Mer and Mahler's emotional moods. The interludes move between impressionistic colors and sharp drama, and show Britten's mastery in transforming the colors of the sea into expressive music of both beauty and anxiety. Few have combined jazz and classical music as skillfully as the American composer George Gershwin. The year after the triumph of the free-form Rhapsody in Blue for solo piano and orchestra in 1924, he began a classically designed piano concerto in three movements. The jazz elements are unmistakable from the opening bars with explosive drum beats, and the concerto also contains clear elements of Charleston, blues and ragtime. The piano part is virtuoso and drives the piece rhythmically forward, while the orchestra acts as both support and counterpoint. George Gershwin himself was the soloist at the premiere in 1925, and the work has since become one of the most played and appreciated piano concertos in the American repertoire. The piano concerto has also left its mark on both popular culture and sports. In the 1951 musical film An American in Paris, a pianist dreams of playing all the instruments in the work at a gala, and South Korean figure skater Yuna Kim won an Olympic gold medal to the music in 2010.

Beethoven's Third Symphony from 1803 shook the foundations of classical music. After the Viennese Classical First and the more experimental Second Symphony, Beethoven found a musical language totally of his own with the Third. It is expansive, large, and does not shy away from new and unexpected effects (the most obvious are probably the dissonances in the opening of the first movement). Never before had any symphony had such an extensive and musically elaborate opening movement, which is at the same time completely romantic in expression. The self-confidence and perfection of the symphony are striking - like a shiny locomotive speeding through a landscape where only oxcarts had previously passed. It turned out in retrospect that the symphony was far ahead of its time. Much of Brahms' symphony music can, for example, be traced back to the Eroica, which says something about its epoch-making influence. The funeral march in movement 2 (which is said to have been composed a few years earlier for a noble Englishman) is unique, a variation movement with a previously unimagined weight and emotional strength. Beethoven single-handedly expanded the dynamics of musical expression, making other symphonies from the same period seem puny by comparison. But it also meant that many listeners found the music bizarre, incomprehensible, and frightening.
