Beethoven really had to struggle with his music. He worked meticulously on every detail, and the work is still extant in his sketchbooks. Even the seemingly obvious opening of the Fifth Symphony, the knocking on the door of fate that immediately seizes the listener and which seems to be such an unshakable thought, undergoes a series of transformations in the sketches that are difficult to understand in retrospect. The energetic scherzo transition in the finale has undergone countless phases of development. The sketches also show that Beethoven originally did not at all envision a finale in a triumphant major, but in a minor key. Beethoven's Fifth is certainly worthy of all the admiring attention it receives. It is the result of the tribulations of a hard-working genius.

Mahler’s Fourth Symphony marked a fresh direction in his symphonic writing. It is more concise than Symphony 2 and 3, and the orchestral forces are noticeably reduced. Gone, too, are the programmatic headings Mahler had previously used for each movement, even though he initially worked from a sketch of guiding ideas. The result is often described as a “happier” and more “playful” symphony, almost chamber-like at times, alive with melodies and dance rhythms. Echoes of the Viennese Classics – Haydn above all – mingle with Austrian Ländler and lilting waltz motifs. The symphony traces a disquieting journey from earthly life towards a heavenly existence beyond death. In the opening movement, sleigh bells and paradisiacal motifs appear alongside march rhythms and a touch of Viennese charm in the strings and winds. The second movement, a scherzo, introduces a ghostly dance of death through a violin solo played with the strings tuned a whole tone higher than usual. Mahler wanted it to sound “like a fiddler – friend Hein (a medieval name for Death) striking up a tune!” The winds add to the eerie atmosphere with unsettling waltz rhythms. Then comes the third movement, Ruhevoll: a serene and deeply moving set of variations. Mahler described it as containing “divinely joyful and profoundly sorrowful melodies”. It is an adagio in the truest Mahlerian sense. Near the end a powerful orchestral outburst dissolves into “heavenly” sonorities in the strings and harp. The gates of paradise begin to open. “When humankind, now filled with wonder, asks what all this means, the child answers with the fourth movement: This is heavenly life!” the composer explained. And this heavenly life is brimming with joy, song, dance, music-making – and above all food and drink. The text of the finale comes from the folk poetry collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn, “Das himmlische Leben”, and is set for soprano.

Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche is one of the great masterpieces of the orchestral repertoire. Until this point the composer had been known as a scholarly and rather serious young master, but after the premiere of Till in Cologne on 5 November 1895, it became clear that he also possessed a sparkling sense of humour. Formally the work resembles a rondo, inviting us to follow the various escapades of the title character. Till Eulenspiegel, a famous trickster who had appeared in literature since the Middle Ages, is introduced in unmistakably fairy-tale fashion: the violins begin the piece with a dreamy phrase that seems to sing, “Once upon a time...”. We then encounter Till as an itinerant preacher, see him fall in love, watch as he is brought to trial and sentenced to death, and finally witness his hanging. No name was inscribed on his gravestone, but an image of an owl and a mirror got to illustrate an old proverb: “Man sees his own faults as little as an owl recognizes his ugliness in looking into a mirror.” Hence the name Eulenspiegel (The Owl’s Mirror).

George Bizet (1838-1875) L'Arlésienne Suite No. 1 Preludium Menuett Adagietto Carillon Author Alphonse Daudet depicted the countryside and people of exotic Provence. One of his most beloved short stories he called The Girl from Arles, which he expanded into a drama in five acts. The play eventually became an opera by Francesco Cilea (1897), but the stage music composed by Georges Bizet was most appreciated. In total, he contributed 27 short vignettes for a small chamber orchestra of 26 musicians, the Théatre de Vaudeville could not afford more. Bizet himself contributed free piano playing. A few movements were written for choir. The first performance on 1 October 1872 was a complete flop, and the play was closed after 21 performances for half a salon. The author exclaimed: "It was a dazzling fiasco with the most charming music in the world, costumes of silk and velvet, and Opéra-Comique scenery. I left the theater dejected, and with the same laughter that pierced the tragic scenes still in my ears, I resolved to write no more plays." But Bizet believed in his music and was eager to save it, so he immediately compiled four of the pieces into an orchestral suite, while arranging them for large symphony orchestra, retaining the important saxophone part; an exciting, new instrument that until now has been mostly used for experiments. This first suite was premiered six weeks after the stage premiere, and was an immediate success. He did not keep the chronology of the drama, it was more important that the movements create a unity. The plot is very simple but told with psychological depth in a dreamy and poetic way. "His name was Jan. He only had eyes for one - a little girl from Arles, dressed in velvet and lace, whom he had once met in the market place in Arles. At his house - to begin with - the party was not looked upon kindly. It was said that the girl was coquettish and her parents were not from the area, but Jan wanted his girl from Arles at all costs. He said: I will die if I don't get her." These few words capture and summarize the whole story. Everything revolves around her, but the girl from Arles never appears on stage, and he takes his own life when it becomes clear to him that she has another lover. Those who know their Christmas music recognize the Kings' March in the opening movement.

The choir was founded in 1917 by cousins Elsa and Wilhelm Stenhammar. Elsa Stenhammar was one of the driving forces in turn-of-the-century choir life in Gothenburg and became the choir's first rehearser. On December 8, 1917, the choir debuted in Beethoven's Choir Fantasy with Wilhelm Stenhammar as soloist at the grand piano. As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir has participated in concerts in, among other places, the Royal Albert Hall and Canterbury Cathedral in England, as well as participated with the Gothenburg Symphony in the annual music festival in the Canary Islands and on a tour to China.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Violin Concerto E minor Allegro molto appassionato Andante Allegretto non troppo. Allegro molto vivace Felix Mendelssohn came from a German-Jewish family and as a composer strove to reconcile issues of spirituality and religious tolerance within society, and within himself. The Violin Concerto in E minor was written for the soloist Ferdinand David. However, the wait was six years before the premiere could take place in Leipzig on March 13, 1845 with David and the Gewandhaus Orchestra. New was the transition to the second movement without a break, as well as the fact that the soloist took up the opening theme, not the orchestra, and that a solo cadenza came already in the introduction - something that Sibelius and Tchaikovsky would also follow. The success was immediate. But in Nazi Germany, Mendelssohn's greatness was denied and his name was erased from public life.

Richard Wagner’s last traditionally Romantic opera centers on the knight Lohengrin. The popular prelude to the first act—which the author Thomas Mann considered the “pinnacle of Romanticism”—is frequently performed as a standalone concert piece. Through various musical themes and motifs, we are drawn into the first act’s world of passion, mystery, and heroism. In Lohengrin’s Grail narrative, the myth of the holy vessel is said to symbolize human longing.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Eine kleine Nachtmusik Allegro Romanze: Andante Menuetto e Trio Rondo: Allegro One might wonder if there is a more beautifully crafted and polished gem than Eine kleine Nachtmusik - so appealing, so perfect. Nachtmusik is German for "serenade", and when it was composed, Mozart had already composed twelve serenades. Compared to the earlier serenades, it truly lives up to its name - a little one. It becomes a miniature, a simple, classically pure and easily accessible trifle, in terms of scope. The earlier serenades could be 45 minutes long. A serenade should also be intended to be played outdoors, but that does not work at all with Eine kleine Nachtmusik with its lovely and intimate string music. Mozart included Eine kleine Nachtmusik in his own catalogue of compositions in Vienna on August 10, 1787, and listed it as having five movements. There was another minuet - but this movement disappeared early in the work's history and has never been found. It has also not been possible to find out why Mozart wrote this lovely entertainment music. In any case, it does not seem to have been a commission, but that he wrote music out of his own interest. It has been surprising that the mature master of cosmopolitan Vienna interrupted the demanding work of orchestrating the exciting nighttime moods of the opera Don Giovanni in favor of this delicacy. Was it the contrast he needed? Was the inspiration pressing?

The Gothenburg Symphony was formed in 1905 and today consists of 109 musicians. The orchestra's base is Gothenburg Concert Hall at Götaplatsen that has gathered music lovers since 1935. We are also a proud partner of Barbara Hannigan's Equilibrium mentoring program focusing on young singers at the start of their careers. The title Principal Guest Conductor is shared by Pekka Kuusisto from 2025. Wilhelm Stenhammar was the orchestra's chief conductor from 1907 to 1922. He gave the orchestra a strong Nordic profile and invited colleagues Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius to the orchestra. Under the direction of conductor Neeme Järvi from 1982-2004, the orchestra made a series of international tours as well as a hundred disc recordings and established themselves among Europe's leading orchestras. In 1996, the Swedish Riksdag appointed the Gothenburg Symphony as Sweden's National Orchestra. In recent decades, the orchestra has had prominent chief conductors such as Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Mario Venzago and Gustavo Dudamel, following Kent Nagano as Principal Guest conductor. Beethoven's Third Symphony from 1803 shook the foundations of classical music. After the Viennese Classical First and the more experimental Second Symphony, Beethoven found a musical language totally of his own with the Third. It is expansive, large, and does not shy away from new and unexpected effects (the most obvious are probably the dissonances in the opening of the first movement). Never before had any symphony had such an extensive and musically elaborate opening movement, which is at the same time completely romantic in expression. The self-confidence and perfection of the symphony are striking - like a shiny locomotive speeding through a landscape where only oxcarts had previously passed. It turned out in retrospect that the symphony was far ahead of its time. Much of Brahms' symphony music can, for example, be traced back to the Eroica, which says something about its epoch-making influence. The funeral march in movement 2 (which is said to have been composed a few years earlier for a noble Englishman) is unique, a variation movement with a previously unimagined weight and emotional strength. Beethoven single-handedly expanded the dynamics of musical expression, making other symphonies from the same period seem puny by comparison. But it also meant that many listeners found the music bizarre, incomprehensible, and frightening.

Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) Symphony No. 6 Op 104 Allegro molto moderato Allegretto moderato Poco vivace Allegro molto As early as 1915, Sibelius had begun work on what would become the Sixth and Seventh Symphonies, but it was not an easy journey. In February 1920, work on the Sixth Symphony seems to have come to a halt. He writes in his diary: "I am getting older and youth brings new ideals and interests people in them. Shall the evening of my life find me listless and resigned, quietly awaiting death?" His question seems frighteningly prophetic. After the Seventh Symphony and Tapiola (1926), a 30-year musical silence awaited the Finn in Ainola. It was fundamentally about being true to himself, and Sibelius found that his voice was no longer relevant. But in the 1920s, a lively glow still remained. The Fifth Symphony was a success in the United States (with Stokowski in Philadelphia and Stransky in New York). Sibelius also received a well-paid offer to become a teacher at the prestigious Eastman-Rochester School, but after many turns he turned it down: "To leave composing now would be suicide." In the autumn of 1922, work on the Sixth Symphony gained new momentum and by January 1923 most of it was finished. The premiere took place in Helsinki on 19 February 1923. Just a week later, the symphony received its Swedish premiere in Stockholm, and on 10 April Sibelius took the symphony to Gothenburg. Julius Rabe wrote in Göteborgs Handels och Sjöfartstidning: "Yesterday's Sibelius concert was without a doubt the greatest day of this now-passing musical year. It had both a powerful inner significance and an outer festivity. And there was in the audience a willingness to receive and let themselves be carried away, which gives a concert such an invaluable addition of atmosphere and resonance, which welds together the thousand-strong crowd of the public into a humbly listening congregation, where the individuals disappear and merge into a collective personality."
