Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924)
Pelléas et Mélisande Op 80
Prélude
Fileuse
Sicilienne
The Death of Mélisande
The Belgian Maurice Maeterlinck wrote the verse drama Pelléas and Mélisande about forbidden love, which with its intense atmosphere, mysterious setting and dark background made readers' hearts pound with passion, excitement and fear. The play was a success in Europe and, together with the fairy tale play Fågel blå, Maeterlinck's triumphant procession went all the way to the Swedish Academy in Stockholm. In 1911 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Debussy refused when the English actress Mrs Patrick Campbell asked for music for a theatrical production of Pelléas and Mélisande in London. He was already busy with his own opera of the fairy tale. She turned instead to Fauré, whose music had recently been performed in the same city. He accepted the assignment but only had a month or so to complete it. He entrusted the orchestration to his student Charles Koechlin.
"Fileuse" is a scene where Mélisande sits at the spinning wheel and talks with her stepson Yniold and her brother-in-law Pelléas (with whom she is in love). The Sicilian is an intermezzo between two scenes. In the drama’s twists and turns, Mélisande’s husband Golaud kills his brother Pélleas and later Mélisande dies in childbirth when she gives birth to a small and frail daughter. The tragedy is complete. It can be added that the prelude with its gloomy tones occasionally echoes faintly from Tristan and Isolde, also a tragic love drama.

Richard Wagner (1813–1883)
Wesendonck Lieder
Fünf Gedichte von Mathilde Wesendonk
Der Engel · Stehe still · Im Treibhaus · Schmerzen · Träume
Richard Wagner only composed around twenty songs, including a handful in 1839–1842, when he tried in vain to win the hearts of Parisians. The next step was in 1857–1858: in political asylum in Zürich during his most revolutionary period, he simultaneously became involved in a passionate romance with Mathilde Wesendonck, the wife of a wealthy Swiss silk merchant. Wagner and his wife had a cottage on the family’s estate in the countryside. One thing is for certain: as a revolutionary, Wagner was guided more by artistic dreams than political convictions.
He worked on Tristan und Isolde and read his libretto for the opera to his lover. She was delighted and responded with her own poetry, which was infused with the same spirit. Wagner was captivated by her poems and set them to music. He composed Der Engel, Schmerzen and Träume in the winter of 1857. They were completed the following May.
In the first poem, she presents Wagner as the savior of art. He himself wrote on the sheet music for the sketches of the first act of Tristan: “To the angel who lifted me so high.” Love may have enchanted them, but in concrete terms, the work on Mathilde’s five poems contributed inspiration to Tristan. Material from Im Treibhaus (In the Greenhouse) was incorporated into the introduction to the third act. Schmerzen (Pain) begins with the same chord that also begins the second act, and Träume (Dreams) can be seen as an early version of the love duet in the same act.

Ludwig van Beethoven's First Symphony, written in 1799-1800, is not a tentative attempt by some inexperienced and immature composer. No, Beethoven had long been known as one of the foremost pianists and improvisers of his time, and his compositions had already received considerable attention. He had managed to write two piano concertos, eleven piano sonatas and six string quartets - to name a few. But on the other hand, he was not as bold as he might have been in some of his chamber music works.
The critics nevertheless thought that the symphony was generally good and that it offered many novelties and "a whole world of ideas". "But too many wind instruments were used, so it sounded more like a brass band than an orchestra". 200 years later, we find the symphony both clear and concise, conventional and strongly related to the symphonies of Mozart and Haydn. But we also notice that there is something more here - a strong personal touch. The driving spirit is not borrowed, it is Beethoven's own signature.

Beethoven really had to struggle with his music. He worked meticulously on every detail, and the work is still extant in his sketchbooks. Even the seemingly obvious opening of the Fifth Symphony, the knocking on the door of fate that immediately seizes the listener and which seems to be such an unshakable thought, undergoes a series of transformations in the sketches that are difficult to understand in retrospect.
The energetic scherzo transition in the finale has undergone countless phases of development. The sketches also show that Beethoven originally did not at all envision a finale in a triumphant major, but in a minor key. Beethoven's Fifth is certainly worthy of all the admiring attention it receives. It is the result of the tribulations of a hard-working genius.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Overture to Le nozze di Figaro
The task of an overture is to create anticipation and excitement and to give a foreshadowing of the dramatic events of the opera. Mozart signals joy and comedy with the high tempo, but the dark tones also let us suspect that this is an opera with serious elements. The frame plot is one of the most common in Mozart's time: the struggle between the lord - the count - and the servant, where the latter ultimately draws the longest straw. When the overture's humming flight of bumblebees has come to an end, the curtain rises, and we meet the servant Figaro and his fiancée Susanna in the process of finding the best place for their new bed - they are getting married.
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Symphony No. 4 Op 60
The Fourth Symphony is, as often said, situated between two symphonic giants. A reputation that has often led to its being overlooked, but in fact it follows a working method that is more the rule than the exception in Beethoven. The revolutionary works are often followed by music that seems to take care of what follows the storm. And this year, 1806 – we are in perhaps the most insanely productive of Beethoven’s life – is no exception.
The symphony begins with a tender entry followed by a plateau of unison Bb in strings and winds that is shadowily surrounded by slow melodic movements. The music grows suggestively from a melancholy to a euphoria – from minor to major – when the allegro breaks through in all its splendor.
After the first movement's alternating shift between intense outbursts and calm breaths, one of Beethoven's most lyrical adagios follows, where the repetitive rhythm (you hear it immediately in the verse) makes the movement dance forward stubbornly.
In the third and fourth movements, a scherzo and an allegro, the music rushes forward. For those who have already noticed how the form of the adagio rhythm is a variation of the first movement's syncopated outbursts, here, in the more dance-like parts of the symphony, you can notice how Beethoven turns the building blocks of the music inside and outside, but at the same time joins them together. In this way, he lets us anticipate the revolution that the symphony's form is facing. Fate will soon be knocking on the door.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Akademische Festouvertüre Op 80
At age 60, Brahms was widely considered the greatest living composer. He became an honorary citizen of the city of his birth, Hamburg, and was honored with a commemorative medal from the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. He was called to Cambridge to receive an honorary doctorate from the university, but Brahms was not keen on for these kinds of honors, so he declined. It was easier for him to accept a similar offer from the somewhat more anonymous Breslau, and as a thank you he wrote the Academic Festival Overture, based on famous German student songs. It all starts in mournful C minor and then follows the songs "Wir hatten gebaut ein stattliches Haus", "Landesvaters", "Fuchslieder" and finally (the well-known among students) "Gaudeamus igitur". Brahms has hardly been known as a jubilant composer, and nowhere in his output is one to find more exuberant C major tuning than in this overture's glittering final bars.

Since the 2019-2020 season, Barbara Hannigan is Principal guest conductor. We are also a proud partner of Barbara Hannigan's Equilibrium mentoring program focusing on young singers at the start of their careers. The title Principal Guest Conductor is shared by Pekka Kuusisto from 2025.
Wilhelm Stenhammar was the orchestra's chief conductor from 1907 to 1922. He gave the orchestra a strong Nordic profile and invited colleagues Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius to the orchestra. Under the direction of conductor Neeme Järvi from 1982-2004, the orchestra made a series of international tours as well as a hundred disc recordings and established themselves among Europe's leading orchestras. In 1996, the Swedish Riksdag appointed the Gothenburg Symphony as Sweden's National Orchestra.
In recent decades, the orchestra has had prominent chief conductors such as Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Mario Venzago and Gustavo Dudamel, following Kent Nagano as Principal Guest conductor. Anna-Karin Larsson is CEO and artistic director, Gustavo Dudamel honorary conductor and Neeme Järvi chief conductor emeritus. The orchestra's owner is the Västra Götaland Region.
