Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Overture to Le nozze di Figaro The task of an overture is to create anticipation and excitement and to give a foreshadowing of the dramatic events of the opera. Mozart signals joy and comedy with the high tempo, but the dark tones also let us suspect that this is an opera with serious elements. The frame plot is one of the most common in Mozart's time: the struggle between the lord - the count - and the servant, where the latter ultimately draws the longest straw. When the overture's humming flight of bumblebees has come to an end, the curtain rises, and we meet the servant Figaro and his fiancée Susanna in the process of finding the best place for their new bed - they are getting married.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Violin Concerto E minor Allegro molto appassionato Andante Allegretto non troppo. Allegro molto vivace Felix Mendelssohn came from a German-Jewish family and as a composer strove to reconcile issues of spirituality and religious tolerance within society, and within himself. The Violin Concerto in E minor was written for the soloist Ferdinand David. However, the wait was six years before the premiere could take place in Leipzig on March 13, 1845 with David and the Gewandhaus Orchestra. New was the transition to the second movement without a break, as well as the fact that the soloist took up the opening theme, not the orchestra, and that a solo cadenza came already in the introduction - something that Sibelius and Tchaikovsky would also follow. The success was immediate. But in Nazi Germany, Mendelssohn's greatness was denied and his name was erased from public life.

Ludwig van Beethoven's First Symphony, written in 1799-1800, is not a tentative attempt by some inexperienced and immature composer. No, Beethoven had long been known as one of the foremost pianists and improvisers of his time, and his compositions had already received considerable attention. He had managed to write two piano concertos, eleven piano sonatas and six string quartets - to name a few. But on the other hand, he was not as bold as he might have been in some of his chamber music works. The critics nevertheless thought that the symphony was generally good and that it offered many novelties and "a whole world of ideas". "But too many wind instruments were used, so it sounded more like a brass band than an orchestra". 200 years later, we find the symphony both clear and concise, conventional and strongly related to the symphonies of Mozart and Haydn. But we also notice that there is something more here - a strong personal touch. The driving spirit is not borrowed, it is Beethoven's own signature.

Bach took the melody itself from an older hymn and added text by the hymn writer Sebald Heyden. In both orchestra and choir, Bach exposes man and his shortcomings. Where we have transgressed our powers, we have shown not strength, but weakness. Where we hurt our neighbor, we also hurt ourselves. In a chorale further on, forgiveness awaits: "I do not deny my sin, but your grace and mercy are much greater." Like Bach, the composer Max Reger was based in Leipzig. Here he has taken Bach's hymn and transformed it into slow strings, as humble as human voices.

The choir was founded in 1917 by cousins Elsa and Wilhelm Stenhammar. Elsa Stenhammar was one of the driving forces in turn-of-the-century choir life in Gothenburg and became the choir's first rehearser. On December 8, 1917, the choir debuted in Beethoven's Choir Fantasy with Wilhelm Stenhammar as soloist at the grand piano. As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. However, the wait was six years before the premiere could take place in Leipzig on March 13, 1845 with David and the Gewandhaus Orchestra. New was the transition to the second movement without a break, as well as the fact that the soloist took up the opening theme, not the orchestra, and that a solo cadenza came already in the introduction - something that Sibelius and Tchaikovsky would also follow.
