Boris Blacher (1903-1975) Violin Sonata Op 18 Surprising, playful and modern – Boris Blacher’s Violin Sonata Op. 18 offers a fascinating journey into the musical landscape of the 20th century. Here, sharpness and elegance meet in a tight and dynamic interplay between violin and piano, where every musical gesture seems to take the work in a new direction. The Violin Sonata was written in 1941, and bears clear traces of the urban and culturally vibrant Berlin where Blacher worked in the shadow of the difficult circumstances of his time. He had Jewish roots, and the Nazis classified his music as “degenerate” (Entartete Musik). The sonata is characterized by a tight and modern expression, which clearly distances itself from the late Romantic aesthetics advocated by the regime. Instead, he drew inspiration from French composers such as Satie and Milhaud, as well as from Stravinsky’s rhythmic expression and the sound world of jazz. The expanded tonality is colored by dissonances and chromaticism with features of Hindemith, while the asymmetrical, rhythmic shifts already hint at the varying rhythms (variable meters) that would later become more central to his music. His son Kolja Blacher has been teaching Ava Bahari. Andreas Konvicka

Elfrida Andrée (1841-1929) Two Romances for Violin and Piano Larghetto Allegro Elfrida Andrée became principal organist in Gothenburg cathedral in 1867, the country's first woman in the position. Her musical contributions in this city are overwhelming. She also worked as a conductor and from 1897 led no less than 800 so-called folk concerts. With chamber music, orchestral suites, organ works and an opera on her list of works, her output is impressive. She liked to compose in a sympathetically fluid and charming style, natural and inspired music.

35 years after Tchaikovsky's death, Stravinsky paid tribute to him by writing a ballet based on some of his songs and piano pieces. It was called La baiser de la Fée, The Fairy's Kiss, and was based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Ice-Maiden. Just as the Ice-Maiden gave the newborn boy eternal life with her kiss, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky believed, had put an eternal stamp on his ballets. Together with the violinist Samuel Dushkin, Stravinsky arranged a suite of the ballet music, Divertimento for violin and piano. It was also arranged for orchestra. The entire work places enormous demands, perhaps above all on the violinist's technical skill. In addition to breakneck passages, flageolet playing and other advanced playing techniques, playing on several strings simultaneously is regularly used. In the opening Andante, a theme from Tchaikovsky's Children's Songs is heard, which gradually fades out in the violin.

In Beethoven's famous Kreutzer Sonata, violin and piano meet in a charged interplay full of contrasts, from dark drama to dazzling virtuosity. A work that grabs you immediately, and holds the listener in an iron grip from the first to the last note. Violin Sonata No. 9 in A major, dedicated to the French violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer, is one of Beethoven's most visionary and groundbreaking chamber music works. The sonata, composed in 1803, marks a clear step away from the older tradition where the piano often dominated and the violin had a more supporting role. In Beethoven's work, the instruments instead meet as equal forces, in a dramatic and technically demanding interplay. After a slow and solemn introduction, the first movement bursts forth with powerful energy. This is followed by a varied movement characterized by both lyricism and virtuosity, before concluding with a furious finale. Ironically, Kreutzer himself is said to have never played the sonata, which he considered too difficult and eccentric, but today it is considered one of the most iconic works in the violin repertoire. Not all composers write their most famous works when they are 19 years old. One who did was George Enescu with his two Romanian Rhapsodies from 1901. They accompanied him throughout his life. In his later years, he is said to have lamented how they overshadowed his other music. Enescu came from Romania and was a bit of a master at everything he did. It has been said of his memory that he could recreate all of Beethoven's works if they were lost. He picked up the term rhapsody from Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies. It is a title that signals spontaneity, improvisation and movement. But also that different parts have been joined together. In the rhapsodies, Enescu portrayed a romantic image of his homeland. The first begins with the folk song “Am un leu” which is said to have been the first Enescu learned at the age of 4. After the calm introduction, the piece bursts into lively dances. The piece depicts peasants stamping and hooting at an increasingly fast pace. It is an exotic dream image of a world that may have been – but is no longer.

Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) Symphony No 3 Adagio - Allegro Adagio cantabile Scherzo. Vivace Finale. Allegro Louise Farrenc has a clear place in music history as one of the most prominent and remarkable female composers. She became the first woman to be appointed professor at the Paris Conservatory, and won the battle to receive the same high salary as her male colleagues. Her third symphony now ends up on lists of the world's best symphonies, as updated list writers increasingly open their ears to female geniuses. The symphony carries, among other things, one of the most magnificent finales in the orchestral repertoire. She wrote the symphony in 1847, but it was not performed until two years later by the concert company at the Conservatory. The first movement moves subtly from a soft introduction in the oboe part. Immediately, agitated strings and timpani fall in, an unexpected build-up in a short time. Farrenc trusts the listener to follow along on the journey, and complements the high energy with quotes from Beethoven. Sudden changes in dynamics heighten the tension. The second movement's adagio begins with a lyrical clarinet melody and forms a simple and elegant interlude, calm and unwavering. The third movement's scherzo has forward momentum, momentum and tension that constantly bubbles beneath the surface, paused only during the central woodwind trio. The decisive unison strings that begin the final movement signal a return to a darker, bolder energy. Just as in Mozart's Symphony No. 40, passion and emotion emerge within the firm framework of classicism. With a power worthy of Romanticism, the finale concludes with three triumphant closing chords.

Allegro Andante Vivace non troppo Johannes Brahms composed his Double Concerto for violin, cello and orchestra in the summer of 1887. It was his last work for orchestra and, despite being only 30 minutes long, is a truly magnificent work. Brahms himself called the work “entertaining” and a “joke” – words that a listener finds difficult to reconcile with such an intense and powerful concert. The usual understanding of Brahms’ Double Concerto is that its serious appearance goes back to the conflict that arose between Brahms and his friend, the violinist Joseph Joachim, regarding an affair between Joachim’s wife and Brahms’ publisher. The concerto – which was premiered by Joachim and the cellist Robert Hausmann with Brahms conducting – is said to have been an outstretched hand after several years of silence. An emotional melody in the cello turns gently towards the violinist, and in the end the two are united. The double concerto received mixed reviews. Some, such as Clara Schumann, considered it lacking in warmth. Today it stands as one of the last great concertos of the 19th century, dating back to Mozart and Beethoven – and a unique example of Brahms' late style of composition for full orchestra, in which he also uses the full range of the solo instruments.

Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) Galántai táncok Ancient Hungarian peasant music, still unchanged in the villages, began to be recorded by Zoltán Kodály and Bartók around 1905. Both composers were captivated by the unique Romani verbunkos music. In the small Slovak town of Galánta, fifty kilometers from Bratislava, next to the train line between Vienna and Budapest, there was a famous Romani music chapel that gave Kodály his earliest taste for orchestral sound. Dances from Galánta were written in 1933 for the 80th anniversary of the Budapest Philharmonic. The instrumentation for double flutes (plus piccolo), oboes, A-clarinets, bassoons, plus four horns, timpani, snare drum, glockenspiel, triangle and strings imitated such a verbunkos band with a solo clarinet in the lead role as the Romani tárogáto. The story goes that the Galánta pieces were originally composed during Hungary's struggle for independence under Turkish occupation. Verbunkos music began to be published in sheet music in the late 18th century, not least in Vienna, where both Mozart and Schubert were strongly influenced by it. Kodály uses the slow verbunkos introduction as a rondo theme in the following four dances as well as in the great final coda. It alone takes up more than half the length of the piece. As a respected professor at the Budapest Academy of Music and president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and later an honorary doctor in Oxford and Berlin, Kodály would promote the importance of spontaneous folk music. This liberal orientation also permeated key earlier works such as the Háry János Suite of 1927 and the Dances from Marosszék of 1933, both of which, along with the Galánta Dances, were his most frequently performed works.

Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) Violin Concerto Mässig bewegte Halbe Langsam Lebhaft Before Paul Hindemith got his breake through as a composer, he was renowned as a skilled instrumentalist on the violin and later also on the viola and viola d’amore. His interest in these instruments was evident early on in his Bach-inspired Kammermusik from the 1920s, in which both the viola and the viola d’amore act as soloists. Despite this, Hindemith wrote only one violin concerto with full orchestra, a work that is usually pointed out as his best both for violin and in concert form, from 1939. The year before, in 1938, he left Germany because his wife had Jewish roots. When the violin concerto had its world premiere in Amsterdam in 1940, not long before the Nazis entered Holland, Hindemith and his wife were already in the United States. Over the next few decades, the concerto was performed regularly, but has since lost some of its popularity. Despite the troubled circumstances surrounding its creation, the violin concerto is an energetic and lively work. It is virtuosic, urbane, and encompasses everything from grandeur to lyrical intimacy.

Antonín Dvorák (1841-1904) Symphony No. 8 Op 88 A few years before Antonín Dvorák left for America, the Eighth Symphony grew during long walks in the woods and fields. The Eighth Symphony is the result of a conscious search for peace and harmony. When the storm sometimes roars for the sake of contrast, it only blows away the dry leaves and brings fresh air with it. It is a happily smiling music, a simple, folk fiddler's music that deviates from the strict symphonic traditions. The first movement begins with a sonorous cello theme that then returns twice during the movement; in the introduction to the development and in the recapitulation. The movement closely follows the sonata form despite the great changes in emotion. The slow movement is an adagio in C minor that is built up from a string of beautiful episodes. Then follows a graceful and elastic waltz before the finale once again presents a short introduction consisting of a trumpet solo. This solo also recurs a few times, including as a pianissimo accompaniment to solo flute and played by trumpets and horns. An outward-looking coda concludes the symphony. On 2 February 1890, this G major symphony was premiered with the composer himself conducting the National Theatre Orchestra in Prague, and he also conducted performances in London and Frankfurt shortly afterwards. The symphony would soon triumph around the world, and alongside the Ninth Symphony (From the New World), written in America, it became the most beloved of his symphonies. The symphony was dedicated to the "Bohemian Franz Joseph Academy for the Promotion of Art and Literature", in thanks for Dvorák becoming its honorary member.

Jacob Mühlrad (b 1991) REMS Jacob Mühlrad has been recognized both at home in Sweden and abroad for his innovative and moving compositions. He combines an avant-garde expression with his Jewish heritage, including in the choral work Kaddish in 2019 for which he was awarded the Michael Bindefeld scholarship. His music has been performed by, among others, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Bamberger Symphoniker and Capella San Francisco. In 2024, he aroused great interest with his composition written for a cello-playing robot. REMS is from 2021 and was Mühlrad's first major orchestral work. Here, the hand explores the unconscious dream state between wakefulness and sleep. In 2023, the music was presented together with sculptures and projections by the artist Alexander Wessely.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Violin Concerto E minor Allegro molto appassionato Andante Allegretto non troppo. Allegro molto vivace Felix Mendelssohn came from a German-Jewish family and as a composer strove to reconcile issues of spirituality and religious tolerance within society, and within himself. The Violin Concerto in E minor was written for the soloist Ferdinand David. However, the wait was six years before the premiere could take place in Leipzig on March 13, 1845 with David and the Gewandhaus Orchestra. New was the transition to the second movement without a break, as well as the fact that the soloist took up the opening theme, not the orchestra, and that a solo cadenza came already in the introduction - something that Sibelius and Tchaikovsky would also follow. The success was immediate. But in Nazi Germany, Mendelssohn's greatness was denied and his name was erased from public life.

Moses Pergament (1893-1977) Dibbuk Moses Pergament was born in Helsinki and was a violinist, composer and music critic. He was able to combine Jewish prayer songs and Nordic songs in his compositions. As early as 1944, Pergament wrote the choral symphony The Jewish Song, which with shocking intensity depicts the march towards the Holocaust. He also wrote the mystery play Eli in collaboration with his friend Nelly Sachs. Dibbuk refers to the spirit of a deceased person who takes up residence in the soul of a living person. It is also the title of a legendary drama by the Jewish author S. An-Sky that Pergament was inspired by. The composition is written for violin and orchestra, and the middle movement is based on what is said to be the oldest Jewish melody to the Song of Songs (Shir Hashirim).

Pavel Haas (1899–1944) Symphony (arr. Zdenek Zouhar) Pavel Haas came from Brno in what is now the Czech Republic. He was deported during World War II, and later murdered in Auschwitz. His only symphony was never completed. It was not until half a century later that the material he left behind was orchestrated, and the work was premiered in 1998. As a composer, Haas had the ability to merge different elements into a unified style, based largely on Moravian folk music and the jazz that had seeped into Central Europe. Later, Haas found an icon in Stravinsky, whose irony he found sympathetic and whose colorful but sparse orchestration fascinated him. Among the works that attracted attention were his Scherzo, Op 5, Fata Morgana, Op 6, and his second string quartet, Op 7. His suite for piano, Op 13, was noticed abroad and established a reputation that was greatly enhanced by his opera The Charlatan (Sarlatán), which premiered in Brno in 1938. The score was awarded a prize by the Smetana Foundation.

Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919-1996) Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes Mieczyslaw (also known as Moshe) Weinberg was born in Warsaw and would certainly have been counted among the leading Polish composers, had he not been forced to flee when the Nazis invaded the country in 1939. He fled to the Soviet Union with his sister. In 1943, he sent the score of his First Symphony to Dmitri Shostakovich, who was impressed and arranged for Weinberg to be invited to Moscow with official approval. This was the beginning of a long friendship and Weinberg's career as a Soviet composer. He developed into a prolific and versatile composer, and some of his symphonies are now ranked among the world's best. In January 1948, his father-in-law was murdered in Minsk on the direct orders of Stalin. It was in such historical circumstances that he wrote Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes. The work brings together a number of folk songs from Moldavia, while the fiery final movement is an unmistakable Jewish klezmer dance.

The Gothenburg Symphony was formed in 1905 and today consists of 109 musicians. The orchestra's base is Gothenburg Concert Hall at Götaplatsen that has gathered music lovers since 1935. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß (transcript by Max Reger) The chorale "O man, weep for your great sin" is found in the final version of the St. Matthew Passion. Bach took the melody itself from an older hymn and added text by the hymn writer Sebald Heyden. In both orchestra and choir, Bach exposes man and his shortcomings. Where we have transgressed our powers, we have shown not strength, but weakness. Where we hurt our neighbor, we also hurt ourselves. In a chorale further on, forgiveness awaits: "I do not deny my sin, but your grace and mercy are much greater." Like Bach, the composer Max Reger was based in Leipzig. Here he has taken Bach's hymn and transformed it into slow strings, as humble as human voices.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Overture to Le nozze di Figaro The task of an overture is to create anticipation and excitement and to give a foreshadowing of the dramatic events of the opera. Mozart signals joy and comedy with the high tempo, but the dark tones also let us suspect that this is an opera with serious elements. The frame plot is one of the most common in Mozart's time: the struggle between the lord - the count - and the servant, where the latter ultimately draws the longest straw. When the overture's humming flight of bumblebees has come to an end, the curtain rises, and we meet the servant Figaro and his fiancée Susanna in the process of finding the best place for their new bed - they are getting married.

The Gothenburg Symphony was formed in 1905 and today consists of 109 musicians. The orchestra's base is Gothenburg Concert Hall at Götaplatsen that has gathered music lovers since 1935. Since the 2019-2020 season, Barbara Hannigan is Principal guest conductor. We are also a proud partner of Barbara Hannigan's Equilibrium mentoring program focusing on young singers at the start of their careers. The title Principal Guest Conductor is shared by Pekka Kuusisto from 2025. Wilhelm Stenhammar was the orchestra's chief conductor from 1907 to 1922. He gave the orchestra a strong Nordic profile and invited colleagues Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius to the orchestra. Under the direction of conductor Neeme Järvi from 1982-2004, the orchestra made a series of international tours as well as a hundred disc recordings and established themselves among Europe's leading orchestras. In 1996, the Swedish Riksdag appointed the Gothenburg Symphony as Sweden's National Orchestra. In recent decades, the orchestra has had prominent chief conductors such as Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Mario Venzago and Gustavo Dudamel, following Kent Nagano as Principal Guest conductor. Anna-Karin Larsson is CEO and artistic director, Gustavo Dudamel honorary conductor and Neeme Järvi chief conductor emeritus. The orchestra's owner is the Västra Götaland Region. The Gothenburg Symphony works regularly with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Joana Carneiro, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Christian Zacharias and Anja Bihlmaier.
