Jacob Mühlrad (b 1991)
REMS
Jacob Mühlrad has been recognized both at home in Sweden and abroad for his innovative and moving compositions. He combines an avant-garde expression with his Jewish heritage, including in the choral work Kaddish in 2019 for which he was awarded the Michael Bindefeld scholarship. His music has been performed by, among others, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Bamberger Symphoniker and Capella San Francisco. In 2024, he aroused great interest with his composition written for a cello-playing robot. REMS is from 2021 and was Mühlrad's first major orchestral work. Here, the hand explores the unconscious dream state between wakefulness and sleep. In 2023, the music was presented together with sculptures and projections by the artist Alexander Wessely.
Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
Violin Concerto E minor
Allegro molto appassionato
Andante
Allegretto non troppo. Allegro molto vivace
Felix Mendelssohn came from a German-Jewish family and as a composer strove to reconcile issues of spirituality and religious tolerance within society, and within himself. The Violin Concerto in E minor was written for the soloist Ferdinand David. However, the wait was six years before the premiere could take place in Leipzig on March 13, 1845 with David and the Gewandhaus Orchestra. New was the transition to the second movement without a break, as well as the fact that the soloist took up the opening theme, not the orchestra, and that a solo cadenza came already in the introduction - something that Sibelius and Tchaikovsky would also follow. The success was immediate. But in Nazi Germany, Mendelssohn's greatness was denied and his name was erased from public life.
Moses Pergament (1893-1977)
Dibbuk
Moses Pergament was born in Helsinki and was a violinist, composer and music critic. He was able to combine Jewish prayer songs and Nordic songs in his compositions. As early as 1944, Pergament wrote the choral symphony The Jewish Song, which with shocking intensity depicts the march towards the Holocaust. He also wrote the mystery play Eli in collaboration with his friend Nelly Sachs.
Dibbuk refers to the spirit of a deceased person who takes up residence in the soul of a living person. It is also the title of a legendary drama by the Jewish author S. An-Sky that Pergament was inspired by. The composition is written for violin and orchestra, and the middle movement is based on what is said to be the oldest Jewish melody to the Song of Songs (Shir Hashirim).
Pavel Haas (1899–1944)
Symphony (arr. Zdenek Zouhar)
Pavel Haas came from Brno in what is now the Czech Republic. He was deported during World War II, and later murdered in Auschwitz. His only symphony was never completed. It was not until half a century later that the material he left behind was orchestrated, and the work was premiered in 1998.
As a composer, Haas had the ability to merge different elements into a unified style, based largely on Moravian folk music and the jazz that had seeped into Central Europe. Later, Haas found an icon in Stravinsky, whose irony he found sympathetic and whose colorful but sparse orchestration fascinated him. Among the works that attracted attention were his Scherzo, Op 5, Fata Morgana, Op 6, and his second string quartet, Op 7. His suite for piano, Op 13, was noticed abroad and established a reputation that was greatly enhanced by his opera The Charlatan (Sarlatán), which premiered in Brno in 1938. The score was awarded a prize by the Smetana Foundation.
Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919-1996)
Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes
Mieczyslaw (also known as Moshe) Weinberg was born in Warsaw and would certainly have been counted among the leading Polish composers, had he not been forced to flee when the Nazis invaded the country in 1939. He fled to the Soviet Union with his sister. In 1943, he sent the score of his First Symphony to Dmitri Shostakovich, who was impressed and arranged for Weinberg to be invited to Moscow with official approval. This was the beginning of a long friendship and Weinberg's career as a Soviet composer. He developed into a prolific and versatile composer, and some of his symphonies are now ranked among the world's best.
In January 1948, his father-in-law was murdered in Minsk on the direct orders of Stalin. It was in such historical circumstances that he wrote Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes. The work brings together a number of folk songs from Moldavia, while the fiery final movement is an unmistakable Jewish klezmer dance.

The story of Robert Schumann and the piano unfolded over the course of his entire life—initially with passion and joy, and later, amidst depression and physical (as well as psychological) challenges, pushing him to the breaking point. In a famous essay from 1839, he muses on the future direction of the piano concerto as a genre. Schumann asks himself which genius will succeed in transforming the interaction between piano and orchestra from a mere circus act into a true symbiosis of sonic splendor.
From the very first notes, it is as if we are hearing the blueprint for what the piano concerto would become in the century to follow. After the orchestra’s opening unison, the piano descends in cascading runs—framed by the orchestra—before the music settles into the theme’s sweet phrasing, passed between oboe and bassoon to the piano, and then carried forward by the strings into the second theme. Schumann’s great achievement with this concerto is the way he unites orchestra and piano; they become part of a shared, unified sound. The premiere of the complete concerto took place in Dresden in 1845, with his wife, Clara Schumann, as the soloist.

Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)
Symphony No. 1, Titan
The first symphony was premiered in Budapest with the composer as conductor. The music attracted violent criticism, because this was something that was not expected. Mahler had made a name for himself as a brilliant opera conductor but as a composer he was virtually unknown, and now he came up with an ambitious, stylistically variegated and strangely personal symphony. Few works by Mahler have since undergone so many revisions - right up until 1898. When the first version was found in the 1960s, it was clear that the differences were large.
The opening is compelling: it begins with an unforgettable feeling of space and stillness. Perhaps Mahler was thinking of when he was left alone in the forest by his father with the promise not to move until his father returned - and it took many hours. Gradually, thematic fragments emerge: horn calls, trumpet fanfares, birdsong. The second movement was first called "Full Sails" and reflects a longing for nature and lively, Austrian-inspired peasant dances.
"Mourning march à la Callot" he called the third movement, and the etching intended by the artist shows the dead hunter being carried on a stretcher by the animals of the forest. It is a parodic picture and a highly parodic piece of music, which is based on the well-known children's song Frère Jacques in an ironic, grotesque and bitter minor version. In the trio part there is another quote from Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. The finale is the despair of a wounded heart. He borrowed the title of the movement from Dante: "From inferno to paradise". Music may seem to start in hell, and Mahler was probably a long way to paradise. But he didn't get there yet, he did so only in the second symphony - and it was started immediately after the first.

Beast Sampler was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Stockholm, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the NDR Sinfonieorchester in Hamburg, and received its premiere in 2014. The work is dedicated to the Royal Philharmonic’s Chief Conductor, Sakari Oramo.
A key starting point for Anders Hillborg was to focus more on sound objects than on harmonically based pitch structures. He often refers to the orchestra as a “sound beast”, in which the individual identities of the instruments merge into a single, unified sonority. Samplings from earlier pieces, together with newly created material, form the structural backbone of the work.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Overture to Le nozze di Figaro
The task of an overture is to create anticipation and excitement and to give a foreshadowing of the dramatic events of the opera. Mozart signals joy and comedy with the high tempo, but the dark tones also let us suspect that this is an opera with serious elements. The frame plot is one of the most common in Mozart's time: the struggle between the lord - the count - and the servant, where the latter ultimately draws the longest straw. When the overture's humming flight of bumblebees has come to an end, the curtain rises, and we meet the servant Figaro and his fiancée Susanna in the process of finding the best place for their new bed - they are getting married.

The Gothenburg Symphony was formed in 1905 and today consists of 109 musicians. The orchestra's base is Gothenburg Concert Hall at Götaplatsen that has gathered music lovers since 1935. Since the 2019-2020 season, Barbara Hannigan is Principal guest conductor. We are also a proud partner of Barbara Hannigan's Equilibrium mentoring program focusing on young singers at the start of their careers. The title Principal Guest Conductor is shared by Pekka Kuusisto from 2025.
Wilhelm Stenhammar was the orchestra's chief conductor from 1907 to 1922. He gave the orchestra a strong Nordic profile and invited colleagues Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius to the orchestra. Under the direction of conductor Neeme Järvi from 1982-2004, the orchestra made a series of international tours as well as a hundred disc recordings and established themselves among Europe's leading orchestras. In 1996, the Swedish Riksdag appointed the Gothenburg Symphony as Sweden's National Orchestra.
In recent decades, the orchestra has had prominent chief conductors such as Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Mario Venzago and Gustavo Dudamel, following Kent Nagano as Principal Guest conductor. Anna-Karin Larsson is CEO and artistic director, Gustavo Dudamel honorary conductor and Neeme Järvi chief conductor emeritus. The orchestra's owner is the Västra Götaland Region.
The Gothenburg Symphony works regularly with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Joana Carneiro, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Christian Zacharias and Anja Bihlmaier.
The violinist Ava Bahari was Artist in Residence at Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra for 2024-2026. She gave her first solo concert at age eight in the Gothenburg Concert Hall. In 2026, her first album with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra was released with a recording of the Sibelius Violin Concerto (Alpha Classics).
In 2025/26, Bahari performed Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with Joshua Weilerstein, Hindemith’s Violin Concerto, and Brahms’ Concerto for Violin and Cello in Gothenburg. Elsewhere in 25/26, she made debut appearances with Orchestre de Paris, Hamburger Symphoniker, Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra, among others, and returned to Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra for their season-closing concerts. With the Swedish Chamber Orchestra she gave the world premiere of Annamaria Kowalsky’s Violin Concerto, commissioned specifically for Bahari.
Ava Bahari is selected as an ECHO Rising Star for 2026/27, and she has received numerous awards, including top prizes at the Premio Paganini Competition in Genova (2021), Concours International Tibor Varga in Sion (2021) and Aurora Music Competition in Stockholm (2019). She studied Bachelor and Master at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin under the guidance of Prof. Kolja Blacher and has also received music and culture scholarships from among others Sten A Olsson's Foundation for Research and Culture.
She plays a 1694 Stradivarius Ovcharov on generous loan from Anders Sveaas Almennyttige Fond.
Erik Risberg was employed as a pianist in the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra from 1995 to 2023, also performing on organ, harpsichord and other keyboard instruments. He regularly performed as a chamber musician, including in a piano duo with Bengt Forsberg. Erik Risberg has also been a valued teacher of musical performance at the Gothenburg Academy of Music and Drama for many years and also gives introductions at the Symphony Orchestra's concerts.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
Violin Concerto E minor
Allegro molto appassionato
Andante
Allegretto non troppo. Allegro molto vivace
Felix Mendelssohn came from a German-Jewish family and as a composer strove to reconcile issues of spirituality and religious tolerance within society, and within himself. Ludwig van Beethoven's First Symphony, written in 1799-1800, is not a tentative attempt by some inexperienced and immature composer. No, Beethoven had long been known as one of the foremost pianists and improvisers of his time, and his compositions had already received considerable attention. He had managed to write two piano concertos, eleven piano sonatas and six string quartets - to name a few. But on the other hand, he was not as bold as he might have been in some of his chamber music works.
The critics nevertheless thought that the symphony was generally good and that it offered many novelties and "a whole world of ideas". "But too many wind instruments were used, so it sounded more like a brass band than an orchestra". 200 years later, we find the symphony both clear and concise, conventional and strongly related to the symphonies of Mozart and Haydn. But we also notice that there is something more here - a strong personal touch. The driving spirit is not borrowed, it is Beethoven's own signature.

With his broad musical experience (he played cornet, percussion and violin), Nielsen has always been popular with orchestras: he is a "musicians' composer" whose parts are almost always rich in content and challenging.
The Fourth Symphony (1916) is dense and intense, but there are also peaceful islands of recovery. The symphony opens with a powerful, completely surprising first movement, moves through a graceful allegretto (in which the wind instruments initially dominate) and a glowing third movement before ending with a blazing finale in which two drummers duel violently - incited and supported by the rest of the orchestra.
This is how Nielsen himself described the symphony: "The title (The Inextinguishable) suggests something that only music itself can express: the elementary will to live. /.../ Life is indelible and inextinguishable, yesterday, today and tomorrow, life was, is and will exist in struggle, conflict, generation and annihilation."

Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes, which premiered in 1945, is one of the most central works in British opera of the 20th century. It tells the story of a fisherman who causes the death of his apprentices, is harassed by the small town population and loses his mind. Between the acts, Britten inserted four orchestral interludes that can be performed as a standalone orchestral suite, the Four Sea Interludes. They are titled Dawn, Sunday Morning, Moonlight and Storm.
The four interludes depict not only the nature outside the small coastal village where the opera is set, but also the psychological content of the opera and the title character's struggle against society and his inner demons. In Britten's music, the sea is both concrete and symbolic, a force of nature and a mirror for human loneliness, alienation and conflict – something that resonated deeply with him as a homosexual in a time of condemnation.
With his sensitive tone language, Britten creates an atmospheric soundscape, and its rich, expansive music is reminiscent of Debussy's La Mer and Mahler's emotional moods. The interludes move between impressionistic colors and sharp drama, and show Britten's mastery in transforming the colors of the sea into expressive music of both beauty and anxiety.

The rhapsody was a perfect tool for provincial exploration - genuine or newly composed folk songs were arranged and assembled into a kind of more elaborate suite. Not even the elegant Ravel, known for clarity and refined orchestral effects, could resist the temptation. His favourite Chabrier had already composed the successful rhapsody Espana in 1883, and he himself had been attracted by Spanish tones in Habanera (1895) for two pianos - which was orchestrated and incorporated into Rapsodie espagnole - and Alborada del gracioso (1905). So the foundation was already laid when he wrote his first major orchestral work Rapsodie espagnole in 1908.
The work flows with sensual orchestral sounds, enchanting natural impressions and fiery dances. "Night Prelude" is followed by a malaguena, a dance from Malaga, and the mentioned habanera, which takes its name from the capital of Cuba. Ravel's mastery in painting with the orchestra is particularly prominent in the concluding Feria, "festival". Here the melody part plays virtuoso between strings and winds while cellos, basses and bassoons run a relay race, all the while percussion with triangle, tambourine and castanets deliver their hits with powerful support from the brass. A more effective orchestral finale is hard to find.
