Andante sostenuto Andantino in modo di canzona Allegro Allegro con fuoco In correspondence as well as a for Tchaikovsky unusual online commentary, both implicit and explicit connections between this fourth symphony and Beethoven's fifth, Symphony of Fate, are suggested. In Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony, it sometimes seems as if he is trying to bring everything together, both the absolute of the music and the programmatic, and this is already audible in the first movement's architectural use of the fanfare theme that surrounds the otherwise inserted classical sonata form. The structural thereby gets a certain programmatic design, but within the form, the motivic work is found and listen (!) here to how Tchaikovsky uses the orchestra as a design of the room. The sonorous qualities of the shift of instrumentation provide a for the time unusual, and for posterity remarkable, use of instrumentation as a form of variation, one in which the ear and the room, not the word, are supreme. And it is here – in the alternation between rhythmic and instrumental variation – that the rhapsodic becomes increasingly apparent: the story the symphony portrays, regardless of whether it is with just the musical aspect or with an idea of ??an underlying narrative, takes on an increasingly clear sonorous garment in Tchaikovsky. The second movement's simpler, more melancholic feeling, and the third movement's dance-like display of pizzicato shock may seem parenthetical after the weight of the first movement, but in miniature the connection between motivic processing and the exploration of space through orchestration is found here as well. Finally, in the fourth, bombastic, movement, everything ties together. The rhapsodic, in the folk-inspired melodies are modulated and thrown around in the orchestral clusters, and finally we are back in the fate theme, and the coda can triumphantly bring us home. Richard Wagner (1813-1883) Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde The musical language of the opera Tristan und Isolde (1859) is sometimes considered the beginning of musical modernism. Tristan’s harmonic language, filled with linguering and unresolved dissonances, not only realizes the sexual tension between the opera’s two central characters, but also heralds the liberation from the limitations of tonality. The famous “Tristan chord” is an unresolved dissonance, an academic way of saying that it “leads to something”. The prelude exemplifies Wagner’s forward-looking view of both harmony and the question of musical form. Here Wagner’s Leitmotif technique, i.e. central themes that correspond to characters and ideas, is also developed. Something that became completely self-evident in film music many decades later. Isolde has just arrived and finds Tristan dead as the famous piece Liebestod (Love's Death) begins. She wants to sink into unconsciousness and finally consummate her love for Tristan by following him into death. The passage builds to a climax when "waves of refreshing winds" begin to envelop Isolde, and again when she imagines dying in "the mighty wave of the world's breath." She sinks everything as the wind floats and dissolves the chord from the prelude.

George Bizet (1838-1875) L'Arlésienne Suite No. 1 Preludium Menuett Adagietto Carillon Author Alphonse Daudet depicted the countryside and people of exotic Provence. One of his most beloved short stories he called The Girl from Arles, which he expanded into a drama in five acts. The play eventually became an opera by Francesco Cilea (1897), but the stage music composed by Georges Bizet was most appreciated. In total, he contributed 27 short vignettes for a small chamber orchestra of 26 musicians, the Théatre de Vaudeville could not afford more. Bizet himself contributed free piano playing. A few movements were written for choir. The first performance on 1 October 1872 was a complete flop, and the play was closed after 21 performances for half a salon. The author exclaimed: "It was a dazzling fiasco with the most charming music in the world, costumes of silk and velvet, and Opéra-Comique scenery. I left the theater dejected, and with the same laughter that pierced the tragic scenes still in my ears, I resolved to write no more plays." But Bizet believed in his music and was eager to save it, so he immediately compiled four of the pieces into an orchestral suite, while arranging them for large symphony orchestra, retaining the important saxophone part; an exciting, new instrument that until now has been mostly used for experiments. This first suite was premiered six weeks after the stage premiere, and was an immediate success. He did not keep the chronology of the drama, it was more important that the movements create a unity. The plot is very simple but told with psychological depth in a dreamy and poetic way. "His name was Jan. He only had eyes for one - a little girl from Arles, dressed in velvet and lace, whom he had once met in the market place in Arles. At his house - to begin with - the party was not looked upon kindly. It was said that the girl was coquettish and her parents were not from the area, but Jan wanted his girl from Arles at all costs. He said: I will die if I don't get her." These few words capture and summarize the whole story. Everything revolves around her, but the girl from Arles never appears on stage, and he takes his own life when it becomes clear to him that she has another lover. Those who know their Christmas music recognize the Kings' March in the opening movement.

Richard Wagner’s last traditionally Romantic opera centers on the knight Lohengrin. The popular prelude to the first act—which the author Thomas Mann considered the “pinnacle of Romanticism”—is frequently performed as a standalone concert piece. Through various musical themes and motifs, we are drawn into the first act’s world of passion, mystery, and heroism. In Lohengrin’s Grail narrative, the myth of the holy vessel is said to symbolize human longing.

The choir was founded in 1917 by cousins Elsa and Wilhelm Stenhammar. Elsa Stenhammar was one of the driving forces in turn-of-the-century choir life in Gothenburg and became the choir's first rehearser. On December 8, 1917, the choir debuted in Beethoven's Choir Fantasy with Wilhelm Stenhammar as soloist at the grand piano. As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir has participated in concerts in, among other places, the Royal Albert Hall and Canterbury Cathedral in England, as well as participated with the Gothenburg Symphony in the annual music festival in the Canary Islands and on a tour to China.

Hector Berlioz (1803–1869) Le carnaval romain (Roman Carnival) Hector Berlioz's stylish concert overture Le carnaval romain delighted contemporary audiences. Berlioz was certainly known as an innovative skyrocketer, but here he had achieved something lively and captivating that made the audience ecstatic. After the premiere, another performance was soon forced. Le carnaval romain was written in 1844 and is not an overture that begins an opera, but a standalone piece, very well suited to begin an orchestral concert. But there is actually a connection to opera: as early as 1837, Berlioz had composed his first opera, the one about the goldsmith and adventurer Benvenuto Cellini, who was active in 16th-century Florence, and when the opera was reworked from two to three acts in the mid-1840s, Berlioz included his Le carnaval romain to illustrate the great carnival scene in the second act, with its roaring frenzy and lively tarantella rhythms. This operation was not done at random, because the first melody heard in Le carnaval romain (played by English horn) is actually borrowed from the opera. To this particular melody, Benvenuto sings to his beloved how he intends to abduct her during this very carnival. The music certainly aroused some wonder when Berlioz used irregular and restless melody lines, but in doing so he avoided all risk of banal intonations, while at the same time seizing the listener.

The famous intermezzo comes from the mini-opera Cavalleria rusticana (previously called “På Sicilien” in Swedish). It is a jealousy drama that takes place in a small Sicilian village on Easter Sunday. Pietro Mascagni won an opera competition with Cavalleria rusticana and it became his biggest hit. The rumor must have spread quickly, because the Swedish premiere was held at the Stockholm Opera the same year as the first performance, in December 1890.
