Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
Symphony No. 4 in A, Op 90 "The Italian"
Allegro vivace
Andante con moto
Con moto moderato
Saltarello Presto
No other composer - Mozart not excluded - has written such magnificently gifted music already as a child. Between the ages of eleven and fifteen, Felix Mendelssohn composed thirteen string symphonies, four operas, five concertos and countless chamber music works, in addition to piano and organ pieces, solo songs and choirs. And a great deal of this is still in the standard repertoire worldwide. He was the son of the wealthy banker Abraham, in whose home artists and musicians were constant guests. On Sundays, the banker used to organize concerts at his home in Berlin. Court musicians and the siblings Felix and Fanny appeared as soloists, and in the audience you could not infrequently find the philosopher Hegel or the scientist Humboldt. So it is perhaps not surprising that the talented Felix made such progress already in his boyhood.
When he was fifteen years old, he began his first symphony for a full orchestra. He managed to write four more symphonies before his premature death at the age of only 38.

Esa-Pekka Salonen is both composer and conductor, long known as the leader of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Starting with the 2026–2027 season, he is appointed Creative Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Creative Director of the Philharmonie de Paris. From 2027–2028, he is Chief Conductor of the Orchestre de Paris. He is Conductor Laureate of the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Honorary Conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. 2020- 2025, he was Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony. He is a teacher at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, where he founded and directs the Negaunee Conducting Program. Salonen also co-founded the annual Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm.
He began the 2025-2026 season touring with Orchestre de Paris, premiering his new horn concerto. Other highlights include the Pierre Boulez 100th anniversary program at the New York Philharmonic, residencies at Sveriges Radio and the Bergen International Festival, and concerts with the LA Phil, Philadelphia Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He concludes the season at the Ojai Music Festival in California, which he curates as musical director, and is also director of the 2026 Tanglewood Festival.
Salonen has an extensive and varied recording catalogue, both as conductor and composer. Recent releases include the Grammy-winning recording of Kaija Saariaho's Adriana Mater on Deutsche Grammophon, recordings of Bartók's three piano concertos with Pierre-Laurent Aimard on Pentatone, and recordings of Ligeti's Clocks and Clouds, Lux Aeterna and Ramifications on Apple Music Classical. His concertos for piano (for Yefim Bronfman), violin (for Leila Josefowicz) and cello (for Yo-Yo Ma) have all been recorded with Salonen conducting.
The glory days of the Viennese waltz at the end of the 19th century were pure madness - completely comparable to today's unrestrained club dancing. Swirling around giant ballrooms with thousands of other couples, over and over again, was the great pleasure and enjoyment of the time. The young loved to be swept up in these communal excesses while the opposing side argued that it was harmful and immoral to spin around in this way. But the Viennese waltz could not be stopped - the Strauss family and their successors spread the courage to the rest of Europe, Russia and the USA.
Ravel was born early enough to know the ravages of the Viennese waltz. This familiarity probably inspired him when he began the orchestral piece intended for Diaghilev's Russian ballet. However, he refused. The "choreographic poem" that was finished in 1920 only became a ballet in 1929 when the dancer Ida Rubinstein staged it. The work's working name was Vienna, a city Ravel knew well by the way, but in the end was given an even more stripped-down and concentrated title: La valse, the waltz.
Like the Strauss waltzes, La valse has a slow opening, after which it finds its rhythm and melody and dances away in good old three-bar. But where Strauss keep the music under soft reins and gently slow down at the end to let off their travelers, Ravel does the opposite: the waltz completely explodes, swells over all borders and explodes both tempo and melody. Ravel simply captures the essence of the Viennese waltz - the rapture and total indulgence. An emotional discharge, or for the theorist: music that comments on itself. The ironic Ravel did not deny himself - what is wrong with satisfying different tastes at the same time?

Highlighting the home region was an expression of Finnish patriotism and the fight for freedom, which was highly relevant in Sibelius' time. One of the more effective artistic expressions of that time was the equivalent of today's art installation: the so-called tableau. Imagine a stage with natural environments, backdrops, props and decorations (scenography, that is) and place real and living people in this room, standing motionless in predetermined poses with convincing expressions.
The Vyborg student department at the University of Helsinki had decided to depict important events in the history of Karelia, and Sibelius was asked to write music for these tableaus. The Karelian city of Vyborg was founded by Swedes at the end of the 13th century and was Finland's second largest city until World War II.
A contemporary description of the three tableaux reads:
Intermezzo: "To the sounds of fanfares and festive processional music, the people of Karelia carry out their tribute to a Lithuanian prince."
Ballad: "Karl Knutsson, overthrown from his throne, listens to a monotonous stylized Finnish song and then dreams himself back to the moods of bygone years, colored by a Scandinavian ballad: the girl in the 'rose haven'."
Alla marcia: "Pontus de la Gardie and his troops march towards Kexholm Castle on the vast Lake Ladoga."
Sibelius originally composed an overture and music for eight tableaux. The overture was published as an independent work, and parts of tableaux nos. 3, 4 and 5 as this Karelia Suite.

In 1874, a major memorial exhibition of works by the artist and architect Victor Hartmann was held in St. Petersburg. The composer Mussorgsky, one of his closest friends, was so deeply moved by the paintings that he went home and composed his piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition. Unfortunately, the music was not published until five years after the composer's death, and it did not achieve true popularity until Ravel orchestrated it in 1922.
The suite consists, in effect, of musical depictions of paintings—some of which still survive today. It begins with a "Promenade," a melody that recurs in various forms between the movements, guiding the viewer from one painting to the next. The Promenade has been interpreted as a portrait of the portly composer himself, waddling through the exhibition. "Gnomus" depicts a nutcracker—a toy figure that cracks nuts with its jaws. *The Old Castle* portrays a medieval Italian castle with a singing troubadour standing before it. In Tuileries, we encounter children and their nannies playing in the Parisian park. "Bydlo" is an old Polish cart with enormous wheels, drawn by oxen.
"Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks" is a small sketch for a ballet; *Samuel Goldenberg and Schmuyle* depicts two Polish Jews—one rich, the other poor. In the marketplace at Limoges, we encounter French women passionately trying to haggle. In *Catacombs*, the artist himself is depicted holding a lantern at the entrance to the Paris catacombs. Baba Yaga was a witch from Russian folklore who lived in a hut—here rendered as a table clock. The finale is *The Great Gate of Kiev*, an unrealized architectural project for a triumphal arch. The music builds into a monumental tribute to the deceased friend.
Hearing this grandiose music, one might easily get the impression that the artworks themselves were masterpieces. In reality, however, they consist of rather simple sketches and small paintings. It was memories and emotions that inspired Mussorgsky—he likely even had one of Hartmann’s paintings hanging on his own wall.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Symphony No. 4 Op 60
The Fourth Symphony is, as often said, situated between two symphonic giants. A reputation that has often led to its being overlooked, but in fact it follows a working method that is more the rule than the exception in Beethoven. The revolutionary works are often followed by music that seems to take care of what follows the storm. And this year, 1806 – we are in perhaps the most insanely productive of Beethoven’s life – is no exception.
The symphony begins with a tender entry followed by a plateau of unison Bb in strings and winds that is shadowily surrounded by slow melodic movements. The music grows suggestively from a melancholy to a euphoria – from minor to major – when the allegro breaks through in all its splendor.
After the first movement's alternating shift between intense outbursts and calm breaths, one of Beethoven's most lyrical adagios follows, where the repetitive rhythm (you hear it immediately in the verse) makes the movement dance forward stubbornly.
In the third and fourth movements, a scherzo and an allegro, the music rushes forward. For those who have already noticed how the form of the adagio rhythm is a variation of the first movement's syncopated outbursts, here, in the more dance-like parts of the symphony, you can notice how Beethoven turns the building blocks of the music inside and outside, but at the same time joins them together. In this way, he lets us anticipate the revolution that the symphony's form is facing. Fate will soon be knocking on the door.
