Andante sostenuto Andantino in modo di canzona Allegro Allegro con fuoco In correspondence as well as a for Tchaikovsky unusual online commentary, both implicit and explicit connections between this fourth symphony and Beethoven's fifth, Symphony of Fate, are suggested. In Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony, it sometimes seems as if he is trying to bring everything together, both the absolute of the music and the programmatic, and this is already audible in the first movement's architectural use of the fanfare theme that surrounds the otherwise inserted classical sonata form. The structural thereby gets a certain programmatic design, but within the form, the motivic work is found and listen (!) here to how Tchaikovsky uses the orchestra as a design of the room. The sonorous qualities of the shift of instrumentation provide a for the time unusual, and for posterity remarkable, use of instrumentation as a form of variation, one in which the ear and the room, not the word, are supreme. And it is here – in the alternation between rhythmic and instrumental variation – that the rhapsodic becomes increasingly apparent: the story the symphony portrays, regardless of whether it is with just the musical aspect or with an idea of ??an underlying narrative, takes on an increasingly clear sonorous garment in Tchaikovsky. The second movement's simpler, more melancholic feeling, and the third movement's dance-like display of pizzicato shock may seem parenthetical after the weight of the first movement, but in miniature the connection between motivic processing and the exploration of space through orchestration is found here as well. Finally, in the fourth, bombastic, movement, everything ties together. The rhapsodic, in the folk-inspired melodies are modulated and thrown around in the orchestral clusters, and finally we are back in the fate theme, and the coda can triumphantly bring us home. Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Symphony No. 4 in A, Op 90 "The Italian" Allegro vivace Andante con moto Con moto moderato Saltarello Presto No other composer - Mozart not excluded - has written such magnificently gifted music already as a child. Between the ages of eleven and fifteen, Felix Mendelssohn composed thirteen string symphonies, four operas, five concertos and countless chamber music works, in addition to piano and organ pieces, solo songs and choirs. And a great deal of this is still in the standard repertoire worldwide. He was the son of the wealthy banker Abraham, in whose home artists and musicians were constant guests. On Sundays, the banker used to organize concerts at his home in Berlin. Court musicians and the siblings Felix and Fanny appeared as soloists, and in the audience you could not infrequently find the philosopher Hegel or the scientist Humboldt. So it is perhaps not surprising that the talented Felix made such progress already in his boyhood. When he was fifteen years old, he began his first symphony for a full orchestra. He managed to write four more symphonies before his premature death at the age of only 38.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Symphony No. 4 Op 60 The Fourth Symphony is, as often said, situated between two symphonic giants. A reputation that has often led to its being overlooked, but in fact it follows a working method that is more the rule than the exception in Beethoven. The revolutionary works are often followed by music that seems to take care of what follows the storm. And this year, 1806 – we are in perhaps the most insanely productive of Beethoven’s life – is no exception. The symphony begins with a tender entry followed by a plateau of unison Bb in strings and winds that is shadowily surrounded by slow melodic movements. The music grows suggestively from a melancholy to a euphoria – from minor to major – when the allegro breaks through in all its splendor. After the first movement's alternating shift between intense outbursts and calm breaths, one of Beethoven's most lyrical adagios follows, where the repetitive rhythm (you hear it immediately in the verse) makes the movement dance forward stubbornly. In the third and fourth movements, a scherzo and an allegro, the music rushes forward. For those who have already noticed how the form of the adagio rhythm is a variation of the first movement's syncopated outbursts, here, in the more dance-like parts of the symphony, you can notice how Beethoven turns the building blocks of the music inside and outside, but at the same time joins them together. In this way, he lets us anticipate the revolution that the symphony's form is facing. Fate will soon be knocking on the door.

1. Selig sind, die da Leid tragen 2. Denn alles Fleisch, es ist wie Gras 3. Herr, lehre doch mich 4. Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen 5. Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit 6. Denn wir haben hier keine bleibende Statt 7. Selig sind die Toten A requiem is typically a musical setting of the traditional Latin text of the Catholic Mass for the Dead. Johannes Brahms, however, broke with these conventions, drawing inspiration from various sources. He had contemplated the work for some time before beginning to write his Mass for the Dead in 1860; the first two movements were completed the following year. The funeral march in the main section of the second movement—which bears a resemblance to a sarabande—originated in a lost sonata in D minor for two pianos that he had been working on as early as 1854. Brahms might well have been content with just these two movements, but when his mother died on February 2, 1865, at the age of 76, he felt compelled to add more music. Consequently, during the spring and summer of 1865, he completed no fewer than four additional movements—those designated as numbers 3, 4, 6, and 7 in the finished work. The first two movements premiered in Vienna on December 1, 1867, but the predominantly Catholic audience failed to grasp the work. On Good Friday (April 10), 1868, all the movements composed up to that point were performed at Bremen Cathedral to such acclaim that the performance was repeated a few weeks later. Both Brahms’s father and Robert Schumann’s widow, Clara, were in attendance. Brahms conducted the performance in Bremen himself, yet he remained highly critical of the work; a month later, he added the slow soprano aria that now constitutes the fifth movement. Thus, his most extensive composition was finally completed, and its extremely self-critical creator was reasonably satisfied. In February 1869, the complete work was premiered in Leipzig by Carl Reinecke, in the form we know today. Before the year was out, it had already been performed in some twenty cities across Germany and Switzerland. It was the first time Brahms had written a major work for soloists, choir, and orchestra. This piece paved the way for a long series of similar works. The fact that Brahms did not use the standard Latin text for the Requiem—or even a translation of it—stems from his background as a Protestant and the fact that he was not particularly religious. The work is based on biblical texts from both the Old and New Testaments—using Luther’s German translation—as well as the Apocrypha; the composer selected these passages with great care, thereby infusing the work with a personal process of mourning that possesses universal human significance. It became a monumental work, yet at the same time one that was deeply personal and heartfelt.

The choir was founded in 1917 by cousins Elsa and Wilhelm Stenhammar. Elsa Stenhammar was one of the driving forces in turn-of-the-century choir life in Gothenburg and became the choir's first rehearser. On December 8, 1917, the choir debuted in Beethoven's Choir Fantasy with Wilhelm Stenhammar as soloist at the grand piano. As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir has participated in concerts in, among other places, the Royal Albert Hall and Canterbury Cathedral in England, as well as participated with the Gothenburg Symphony in the annual music festival in the Canary Islands and on a tour to China.

Beethoven really had to struggle with his music. He worked meticulously on every detail, and the work is still extant in his sketchbooks. Even the seemingly obvious opening of the Fifth Symphony, the knocking on the door of fate that immediately seizes the listener and which seems to be such an unshakable thought, undergoes a series of transformations in the sketches that are difficult to understand in retrospect. The energetic scherzo transition in the finale has undergone countless phases of development. The sketches also show that Beethoven originally did not at all envision a finale in a triumphant major, but in a minor key. Beethoven's Fifth is certainly worthy of all the admiring attention it receives. It is the result of the tribulations of a hard-working genius.

Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) Haakon Jarl Op 16 The Czech national composer Bedrich Smetana, who celebrated his 200th birthday last year, had close ties to Gothenburg. Between 1856 and 1861 he worked in the city as a conductor, pianist and teacher. He developed the city's musical life, founded a music school and composed several works, including three symphonic poems – Wallenstein's Camp, Rickard III and Haakon Jarl, which was the last work Smetana wrote before returning to Prague. After a trip to Weimar, where Smetana was fascinated by the way Franz Liszt transformed literary works into music, Smetana decided to broaden his library with works that would suit a Scandinavian audience. Haakon Jarl is based on a tragedy by the Danish playwright Adam Oehlenschläger. The story takes place in Viking-age Norway, where the ruler, also known as Håkon Sigurdsson, fights against the advance of Christianity. Smetana's Haakon Jarl offers drama from the first note. Dark, doom-laden themes reflect Haakon's ruthless rule, while bright hymn-like melodies depict the budding faith in a new era. There is much emotion and theatricality as a Nordic legend comes to life in Smetana's romantic tone. Jörgen Wade

Compared to the Fourth Symphony, Sibelius's Fifth Symphony is colorful and vibrant, heroic and accessible. But equally it required more work than the brooding and introverted four. No other work caused him so much trouble. "Walked in the cold spring sun. Had a violent impression of Symphony No. 5. The new one!" "Saw today (April 21, 1915) ten before eleven 16 swans. One of the greatest impressions of my life! ... The sound of the same woodwind type as the cranes, but without tremolo. The swans are closer to the trumpet although the sarrusophone sound is clear. Nature mystery and life's woe! The fifth symphony's final theme." The first movement consists of two parts. The first of these begins with a true pastoral idyll, with signal horn motifs and responding woodwinds. Throughout this part the experience of nature is strong, but in the second part of the movement the music takes on a more scherzo-like character. In the slow movement, the idyllic returns, this time with a graceful, almost rococo elegance. "In the background wander the ever-changing cloud formations of the clarinets, bassoons and horns." The finale's main theme shines through an impressionistic shimmer of strings, which contrasts with the swan theme of the trumpets. And then the doomed, severely isolated chords that end this architectural masterpiece. STIG JACOBSSON

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß (transcript by Max Reger) The chorale "O man, weep for your great sin" is found in the final version of the St. Matthew Passion. Bach took the melody itself from an older hymn and added text by the hymn writer Sebald Heyden. In both orchestra and choir, Bach exposes man and his shortcomings. Where we have transgressed our powers, we have shown not strength, but weakness. Where we hurt our neighbor, we also hurt ourselves. In a chorale further on, forgiveness awaits: "I do not deny my sin, but your grace and mercy are much greater." Like Bach, the composer Max Reger was based in Leipzig. Here he has taken Bach's hymn and transformed it into slow strings, as humble as human voices.

Richard Wagner (1813–1883) Wesendonck Lieder Fünf Gedichte von Mathilde Wesendonk Der Engel · Stehe still · Im Treibhaus · Schmerzen · Träume Richard Wagner only composed around twenty songs, including a handful in 1839–1842, when he tried in vain to win the hearts of Parisians. The next step was in 1857–1858: in political asylum in Zürich during his most revolutionary period, he simultaneously became involved in a passionate romance with Mathilde Wesendonck, the wife of a wealthy Swiss silk merchant. Wagner and his wife had a cottage on the family’s estate in the countryside. One thing is for certain: as a revolutionary, Wagner was guided more by artistic dreams than political convictions. He worked on Tristan und Isolde and read his libretto for the opera to his lover. She was delighted and responded with her own poetry, which was infused with the same spirit. Wagner was captivated by her poems and set them to music. He composed Der Engel, Schmerzen and Träume in the winter of 1857. They were completed the following May. In the first poem, she presents Wagner as the savior of art. He himself wrote on the sheet music for the sketches of the first act of Tristan: “To the angel who lifted me so high.” Love may have enchanted them, but in concrete terms, the work on Mathilde’s five poems contributed inspiration to Tristan. Material from Im Treibhaus (In the Greenhouse) was incorporated into the introduction to the third act. Schmerzen (Pain) begins with the same chord that also begins the second act, and Träume (Dreams) can be seen as an early version of the love duet in the same act.

Peter Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) Symphony No. 6 Pathetique Op 74 Adagio;Allegro non troppo - Allegro con grazia - Allegro molto vivace - Finale:Adagio lamentoso Few symphonies contain as many outbursts of emotion and sudden mood swings as Tchaikovsky's Sixth, with the telling title Pathétique ("passionate suffering"). It reflects his manic-depressive personality, he suffered throughout his life from crises and often struggled with illness and depression. Tchaikovsky's death in Saint Petersburg, just nine days after he conducted the premiere, also gave the work a tragic aura right from the start. It was even said that the music deliberately foreshadowed his own death, which occurred after he drank cholera-tainted water. Even today, musicologists disagree whether it was an accident or a forced suicide, to avoid public scandal as a homosexual. Is the sixth symphony really a self-composed requiem? This theory is fueled by the "dark" key of B minor, which stands for great passion and tragedy, and by the unusual structure. The main motif that runs throughout the work consists of a plaintive, descending second interval. The gloomy character of the symphony is clear already in the first movement, with its slow, dark introduction. The second movement is reminiscent of Don José's flower aria from Bizet's opera Carmen, which Tchaikovsky greatly admired. Towards the end of the movement there is a chorale-like funeral march, and even a quote from the Russian Orthodox funeral liturgy. The second movement provides some lightening, and Tchaikovsky wrote it in an elegant 5/4 time signature, which is a fairly common time signature in Russian folk music. The "limping" character makes the movement almost humorous, despite the loving waltz or minuet-like style. In the third movement he returns to the march as idea, but it begins as an cheerful scherzo that gradually unfolds in its full life-affirming power. The fourth movement is the most famous in the symphony, and is partly reminiscent of a mournful requiem. The main theme is characterized by sighing motifs, and at the end the music fades into a low string chord in B minor. Tchaikovsky considered the symphony to be his most important, most personal composition, but the premiere was received cautiously.
