At the very first performance of the German composer Max Bruch’s final version in 1868, the audience embraced the work at once. Bruch’s thoughtful approach to instrumentation allows both soloist and orchestra to shine – their interplay flows with melodic richness and expressive warmth. Like Felix Mendelssohn, Max Bruch was a musical prodigy. He wrote his first symphony and a string quartet at the age of fourteen. Yet it must have been a strange fate for a composer whose works were widely performed and admired to be celebrated, for the rest of his long life, almost exclusively for a single piece: the Violin Concerto in G minor. The world’s great violinists adored it, the public adored it, but Bruch eventually grew weary of players who wanted to perform only that concerto. Unfortunately, he had sold the rights to his publisher early on, meaning he received no income from the immense number of performances during his lifetime. Bruch described the first movement as a prelude – a long one – which leads almost imperceptibly into the second movement. Like Mendelssohn, he lets the soloist enter swiftly rather than opening with the full orchestra. Here, inspired melodies unfold in dialogue with the orchestra, interrupted by two brief solo cadenzas. The violin begins the adagio with a nostalgic, heartfelt line, later followed by brilliant solo writing that avoids any hint of undue sentimentality. A short pause leads into an energetic allegro, where a Hungarian-inspired dance takes command, complete with virtuosic solo passages and a romantic theme that captivates and seduces.

In fact, this is Dvorák's second cello concerto. The first in A major (1865) was a youthful work that he never orchestrated. He filled his new concerto with an overwhelming romanticism, not only through the expressive use of the solo instrument, but also the colorful orchestral palette in which the winds play a major role. The concerto is dedicated to his friend Hanuš Wihan, cellist of the Czech Quartet, who wanted to make some changes at the end. Dvorák wrote to the publisher: "I must insist that the work be printed as I wrote it!" Wihan took offense and entrusted the premiere in London on March 19, 1896 to Leo Stern. Over time, Dvorák reconciled with Wihan and they often performed the concerto together. The reason why Dvorák did not want to change anything in the final movement was purely personal. Returning to Bohemia, he had been reached by the news that a dear sister-in-law had died. He remembered that he had quoted one of her favorite melodies in Four Songs, and he now also included parts of the song in the coda. To emphasize the importance of the work, the cello concerto has sometimes been called "Dvorák's tenth symphony". And Brahms asked himself: "Why on earth did I not know that such a cello concerto could be written?" The musically mature and magnificent concerto is a real test of mastery for the soloist.

Édouard Lalo came from an old Spanish family that had lived in France for several generations. His reputation grew considerably when the great Spanish violinist Pablo Sarasate premiered his Violin Concerto Op. 20 in 1874, followed the next year by Symphonie espagnole – a true stroke of fortune for the 52-year-old composer. Lalo called it a “Spanish symphony”, yet it is essentially a violin concerto in which the soloist is given every opportunity to shine, both through technical brilliance and expressive nuance, while remaining an integral part of the symphonic texture.

Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) Flute Concerto Nielsen tailored the music to the intended musician, and since the flutist Holger Gilbert-Jespersen was a tasteful and elegant man with a Gallic temperament, his concert was bright and chamber-musical, but with unexpected outbursts. The music is characterized by vitality and good mood. In a typical Nielsen way, the music eventually finds its way to the right key. Originally it was in D major, but immediately after the premiere on 21 October 1926 at the Salle Gaveau in Paris, the composer reworked the concerto and had it end in E major. The flute has then been out on many tonal excursions and now seems to have difficulty finding home; by chance, the boozy bass trombone enters the game and happens to be right - and therefore also takes credit from the soloist. One readily agrees with the Swiss composer Arthur Honegger, who was present at the premiere of the concert: "It has small dimensions but is filled with beautiful combinations, such as the dialogues between flute and timpani or bassoon. It is piquant, flowing and not without humor."

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Violin Concerto E minor Allegro molto appassionato Andante Allegretto non troppo. Allegro molto vivace Felix Mendelssohn came from a German-Jewish family and as a composer strove to reconcile issues of spirituality and religious tolerance within society, and within himself. The Violin Concerto in E minor was written for the soloist Ferdinand David. However, the wait was six years before the premiere could take place in Leipzig on March 13, 1845 with David and the Gewandhaus Orchestra. New was the transition to the second movement without a break, as well as the fact that the soloist took up the opening theme, not the orchestra, and that a solo cadenza came already in the introduction - something that Sibelius and Tchaikovsky would also follow. The success was immediate. But in Nazi Germany, Mendelssohn's greatness was denied and his name was erased from public life.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Piano Concerto No. 21 Piano Concerto No. 21 is most often associated in Sweden with Bo Widerberg's international film success Elvira Madigan from 1967. The middle movement was used as a theme in the tragic love story of the line dancer Elvira Madigan and Lieutenant Sixten Sparre. Mozart knew a lot about young love being destined for ruin. Haydn Variations Op 56 Like Beethoven, Brahms was very interested in the variation form and stands out as one of the foremost composers in this area. The theme for the Haydn variations is a chorale called St Antoni, followed by eight variations and a grand finale. A good friend of Brahms, Karl Ferdinand Pohl, had brought some unknown music to Brahms in 1870, including some scores or divertimenti for wind orchestra. One partita contained the Antonius Chorale, which Brahms fell in love with and noted in his sketchbook. At first it was believed to have been composed by Haydn, but researchers increasingly believe that it was possibly one of Haydn's students, probably Ignatz Pleyel, who composed the partita. The theme is based on a hymn that pilgrims used to sing on St. Anthony's Day. The Brahms work is available in two versions, one for two pianos and one for orchestra. Brahms entered the orchestral version in his catalog first, but it was the piano version that first appeared in print. The duo version was first performed by Brahms himself and Clara Schumann. The orchestral version was first performed in November 1873 by the Vienna Philharmonic under Brahms.

Hector Berlioz (1803–1869) Le carnaval romain (Roman Carnival) Hector Berlioz's stylish concert overture Le carnaval romain delighted contemporary audiences. Berlioz was certainly known as an innovative skyrocketer, but here he had achieved something lively and captivating that made the audience ecstatic. After the premiere, another performance was soon forced. Le carnaval romain was written in 1844 and is not an overture that begins an opera, but a standalone piece, very well suited to begin an orchestral concert. But there is actually a connection to opera: as early as 1837, Berlioz had composed his first opera, the one about the goldsmith and adventurer Benvenuto Cellini, who was active in 16th-century Florence, and when the opera was reworked from two to three acts in the mid-1840s, Berlioz included his Le carnaval romain to illustrate the great carnival scene in the second act, with its roaring frenzy and lively tarantella rhythms. This operation was not done at random, because the first melody heard in Le carnaval romain (played by English horn) is actually borrowed from the opera. To this particular melody, Benvenuto sings to his beloved how he intends to abduct her during this very carnival. The music certainly aroused some wonder when Berlioz used irregular and restless melody lines, but in doing so he avoided all risk of banal intonations, while at the same time seizing the listener.

The Gothenburg Symphony was formed in 1905 and today consists of 109 musicians. The orchestra's base is Gothenburg Concert Hall at Götaplatsen that has gathered music lovers since 1935. Since the 2019-2020 season, Barbara Hannigan is Principal guest conductor. We are also a proud partner of Barbara Hannigan's Equilibrium mentoring program focusing on young singers at the start of their careers. The title Principal Guest Conductor is shared by Pekka Kuusisto from 2025. Wilhelm Stenhammar was the orchestra's chief conductor from 1907 to 1922. He gave the orchestra a strong Nordic profile and invited colleagues Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius to the orchestra. Under the direction of conductor Neeme Järvi from 1982-2004, the orchestra made a series of international tours as well as a hundred disc recordings and established themselves among Europe's leading orchestras. In 1996, the Swedish Riksdag appointed the Gothenburg Symphony as Sweden's National Orchestra. In recent decades, the orchestra has had prominent chief conductors such as Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Mario Venzago and Gustavo Dudamel, following Kent Nagano as Principal Guest conductor. Anna-Karin Larsson is CEO and artistic director, Gustavo Dudamel honorary conductor and Neeme Järvi chief conductor emeritus. The orchestra's owner is the Västra Götaland Region. The Gothenburg Symphony works regularly with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Joana Carneiro, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Christian Zacharias and Anja Bihlmaier.
