The last of Brahms' violin sonatas took two years to write and, unlike the two previous violin sonatas, is in four movements. The sonata is dedicated to Brahms' friend and colleague Hans von Bülow and was first performed in Budapest in 1888. In contrast to his lyrical and sunnier works, this sonata has a darker and stormier feel.

As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. He wrote collections of poetry and dramas, readable memoirs, and scientific essays on subjects such as history, philosophy, biology, and astronomy. He was a passionate archaeologist and a skilled actor. The fact that Camille Saint-Saëns composed five symphonies is probably unknown to most people, because only the one with the order number 3 from 1886 is played regularly. The music is particularly sonorous, and contains the same passionate tone as some of Liszt's symphonic poems. It was also intended that the symphony should be dedicated to Liszt, but just over two months after the premiere, Liszt died, which is why the symphony was instead dedicated to his memory. Saint-Saëns has given the symphony a different form. It has two main movements, but within that framework there is a traditional four-movement structure. The slow opening soon turns into a lively orchestral part, but the organ is saved for just over ten minutes to gently introduce the first movement's slow ending with all its dreamy tones. The composer was also a brilliant piano virtuoso, and in the second movement he could not help but give the piano flying four-hand runs surrounded by energetic orchestral sounds. The final part can be said to be more academic, and you must not forget that Saint-Saëns was a devoted Bach admirer, who in the maestoso gives the organ full power. The music suggests the Gregorian death hymn Dies irae, and fugatones alternate between brass and organ, elements that raise the temperature to the stirring conclusion. "I have given all I can give. The story of Robert Schumann and the piano unfolded over the course of his entire life—initially with passion and joy, and later, amidst depression and physical (as well as psychological) challenges, pushing him to the breaking point. In a famous essay from 1839, he muses on the future direction of the piano concerto as a genre. Schumann asks himself which genius will succeed in transforming the interaction between piano and orchestra from a mere circus act into a true symbiosis of sonic splendor. From the very first notes, it is as if we are hearing the blueprint for what the piano concerto would become in the century to follow. After the orchestra’s opening unison, the piano descends in cascading runs—framed by the orchestra—before the music settles into the theme’s sweet phrasing, passed between oboe and bassoon to the piano, and then carried forward by the strings into the second theme. Schumann’s great achievement with this concerto is the way he unites orchestra and piano; they become part of a shared, unified sound. The premiere of the complete concerto took place in Dresden in 1845, with his wife, Clara Schumann, as the soloist.

Compared to the Fourth Symphony, Sibelius's Fifth Symphony is colorful and vibrant, heroic and accessible. But equally it required more work than the brooding and introverted four. No other work caused him so much trouble. "Walked in the cold spring sun. Had a violent impression of Symphony No. 5. The new one!" "Saw today (April 21, 1915) ten before eleven 16 swans. One of the greatest impressions of my life! ... The sound of the same woodwind type as the cranes, but without tremolo. The swans are closer to the trumpet although the sarrusophone sound is clear. Nature mystery and life's woe! The fifth symphony's final theme." The first movement consists of two parts. The first of these begins with a true pastoral idyll, with signal horn motifs and responding woodwinds. Throughout this part the experience of nature is strong, but in the second part of the movement the music takes on a more scherzo-like character. In the slow movement, the idyllic returns, this time with a graceful, almost rococo elegance. "In the background wander the ever-changing cloud formations of the clarinets, bassoons and horns." The finale's main theme shines through an impressionistic shimmer of strings, which contrasts with the swan theme of the trumpets. Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) Piano Concerto No 2 Andante sostenuto Allegro scherzando Presto Camille Saint-Saëns made his debut as a pianist at the age of ten, offering to play any of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas - from memory - as an encore. As a composer, he became extremely prolific, composing music in all genres. His music is characterized by a disarming charm, rich melody and elegance. The second has probably remained his most famous of his five piano concertos and is the earliest of his compositions still in the standard repertoire. In the spring of 1868, Saint-Saëns intended to arrange a concert with the celebrated Russian pianist Anton Rubinstein (not to be confused with Artur Rubinstein) at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. But when it became clear that they would have to wait three weeks for a free concert day, Saint-Saëns took the opportunity in the meantime to write a completely new piano concerto. Rubinstein was so delighted with the new work that he offered the composer to play the solo part while he himself conducted. Saint-Saëns may not have been entirely satisfied with his hastily assembled concert, but in the audience was Franz Liszt himself, who had no shortage of praise to pour over his young colleague's inspired work. The concerto has a very original form. The first movement begins with a cadenza, the second movement is not slow (as convention required), but a mercurial and playful scherzo. The finale is a sparkling presto.

Paul Dukas (1865-1935) L'apprenti sorcier L'apprenti sorcier (The Sorcerer's Apprentice) is the most famous work by the French composer Paul Dukas. It premiered in May 1897 in Paris with the composer himself conducting. The piece is based on Goethe's poem Der Zauberlehrling, about a sorcerer who leaves his apprentice to fetch water. But instead of doing it himself, the apprentice conjures up a broom to do the job for him. Dukas illustrates the broom with a rhythmic theme in the bassoon. The water is depicted through leaps and splashing cymbals. But the apprentice is not fully trained and loses control of the situation. The broom never stops fetching water. The room floods. The apprentice tries to chop the broom in half with an axe, which only gives rise to more brooms. A contributing factor to the music's great popularity was Walt Disney's animated film Fantasia from 1940, starring Mickey Mouse. Dukas' romantic and magical works stand today as a clear precursor, along with Korngold and Holst, to John Williams' shimmering film music.

Beethoven's Third Symphony from 1803 shook the foundations of classical music. After the Viennese Classical First and the more experimental Second Symphony, Beethoven found a musical language totally of his own with the Third. It is expansive, large, and does not shy away from new and unexpected effects (the most obvious are probably the dissonances in the opening of the first movement). Never before had any symphony had such an extensive and musically elaborate opening movement, which is at the same time completely romantic in expression. The self-confidence and perfection of the symphony are striking - like a shiny locomotive speeding through a landscape where only oxcarts had previously passed. It turned out in retrospect that the symphony was far ahead of its time. Much of Brahms' symphony music can, for example, be traced back to the Eroica, which says something about its epoch-making influence. The funeral march in movement 2 (which is said to have been composed a few years earlier for a noble Englishman) is unique, a variation movement with a previously unimagined weight and emotional strength. Beethoven single-handedly expanded the dynamics of musical expression, making other symphonies from the same period seem puny by comparison. But it also meant that many listeners found the music bizarre, incomprehensible, and frightening.
