Haydn Variations Op 56 Like Beethoven, Brahms was very interested in the variation form and stands out as one of the foremost composers in this area. The theme for the Haydn variations is a chorale called St Antoni, followed by eight variations and a grand finale. A good friend of Brahms, Karl Ferdinand Pohl, had brought some unknown music to Brahms in 1870, including some scores or divertimenti for wind orchestra. One partita contained the Antonius Chorale, which Brahms fell in love with and noted in his sketchbook. At first it was believed to have been composed by Haydn, but researchers increasingly believe that it was possibly one of Haydn's students, probably Ignatz Pleyel, who composed the partita. The theme is based on a hymn that pilgrims used to sing on St. Anthony's Day. The Brahms work is available in two versions, one for two pianos and one for orchestra. Brahms entered the orchestral version in his catalog first, but it was the piano version that first appeared in print. The duo version was first performed by Brahms himself and Clara Schumann. The orchestral version was first performed in November 1873 by the Vienna Philharmonic under Brahms.

Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) Symphony No 3 c-moll "Organ Symphony" Camille Saint-Saëns' long life was an unbroken series of triumphs. He wrote collections of poetry and dramas, readable memoirs, and scientific essays on subjects such as history, philosophy, biology, and astronomy. He was a passionate archaeologist and a skilled actor. The fact that Camille Saint-Saëns composed five symphonies is probably unknown to most people, because only the one with the order number 3 from 1886 is played regularly. The music is particularly sonorous, and contains the same passionate tone as some of Liszt's symphonic poems. It was also intended that the symphony should be dedicated to Liszt, but just over two months after the premiere, Liszt died, which is why the symphony was instead dedicated to his memory. Saint-Saëns has given the symphony a different form. It has two main movements, but within that framework there is a traditional four-movement structure. The slow opening soon turns into a lively orchestral part, but the organ is saved for just over ten minutes to gently introduce the first movement's slow ending with all its dreamy tones. The composer was also a brilliant piano virtuoso, and in the second movement he could not help but give the piano flying four-hand runs surrounded by energetic orchestral sounds. The final part can be said to be more academic, and you must not forget that Saint-Saëns was a devoted Bach admirer, who in the maestoso gives the organ full power. The music suggests the Gregorian death hymn Dies irae, and fugatones alternate between brass and organ, elements that raise the temperature to the stirring conclusion. "I have given all I can give. What I have done I will never achieve again."

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Violin Concerto E minor Allegro molto appassionato Andante Allegretto non troppo. Allegro molto vivace Felix Mendelssohn came from a German-Jewish family and as a composer strove to reconcile issues of spirituality and religious tolerance within society, and within himself. The Violin Concerto in E minor was written for the soloist Ferdinand David. However, the wait was six years before the premiere could take place in Leipzig on March 13, 1845 with David and the Gewandhaus Orchestra. New was the transition to the second movement without a break, as well as the fact that the soloist took up the opening theme, not the orchestra, and that a solo cadenza came already in the introduction - something that Sibelius and Tchaikovsky would also follow. The success was immediate. But in Nazi Germany, Mendelssohn's greatness was denied and his name was erased from public life.

Orkesterkommentar: Till Göteborgs Symfonikers stora projekt hör framförandet av Liszts samtliga symfoniska dikter. Minns ni det? Idén kom från förre intendenten Sven Kruckenberg som med iver och envishet såg till att Liszts 13 tondikter och två symfonier framfördes i Göteborgs Konserthus. Projektet påbörjades med Dantesymfonin den 17 oktober 1968 under Norman Del Mars ledning och avslutades med Heroïde funèbre den 28 oktober 1977 med Peter Maag som dirigent. Ett riktigt maratonlopp! Reaktionerna var blandade men den följande diskussionen livlig och uppfriskande. Sven Kruckenberg minns själv: ”En stor del av orkestern förstod sig inte på Liszt, men många i publiken tog emot honom med intresse. ”Synen på Liszts musik har i mångt och mycket förändrats sedan dess vilket Jan Ling bland annat tar upp i sin intressanta bok Franz Liszt och 1800-talets konstmusik (Gidlunds, 2009). Franz Liszt är tveklöst en av senromantikens stora förgrundsfigurer. Han mer eller mindre uppfann den symfoniska dikten som enligt ordboken är en ”orkesterkomposition i fri form och symfonisk stil med utpräglat programmatiskt innehåll, vanligtvis ensatsig”. Les préludes betecknas i Liszts verkförteckning också som Symfonisk dikt nr 3. Pluralformen Les préludes är något förbryllande. Liszt skrev och framförde verket första gången 1848 som preludium till sitt stora kör- och orkesterverk De fyra elementen. När stycket reviderats och första gången spelades i sin nya form i Weimar 1854 lade Liszt till raden ”Efter Lamartine” på titelbladet. Där syftar han på en dikt av den franske lyrikern Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869) som ingår i samlingen Méditations poétiques från 1820. Titelns pluralform får sin förklaring i Lamartines rader: ”Vad annat är vårt liv än en följd av preludier till den okända sång, vars högtidliga begynnelsetoner stäms upp av döden? Kärleken är varje tillvaros strålande morgonrodnad. Men vilket livsöde finns, vars första ljuva lycka inte brutits av något oväder, som med sin dödande stormvind krossat dess illusioner och med sin olycksbringande blixt splittrat dess altare?” Les préludes är typisk för den eklektiske Liszt. Här finns arvet från den preussiska militärmusiken (som även är tongivande hos Liszts förebild Beethoven) och romantikens ljuva klanger i skön förening med den typ av tematisk bearbetning (metamorfosteknik) och kromatisk äventyrlighet som Wagner skulle dra till sin spets. Liszt var för övrigt en stor inspirationskälla för Wagner som sedermera blev Liszts svärson. Les préludes fick ny aktualitet i 1940-talets Tyskland när Hitler valde stycket som signaturmusik till journalfilmer från nazisternas krigståg i Europa. The story of Robert Schumann and the piano unfolded over the course of his entire life—initially with passion and joy, and later, amidst depression and physical (as well as psychological) challenges, pushing him to the breaking point. In a famous essay from 1839, he muses on the future direction of the piano concerto as a genre. Schumann asks himself which genius will succeed in transforming the interaction between piano and orchestra from a mere circus act into a true symbiosis of sonic splendor. From the very first notes, it is as if we are hearing the blueprint for what the piano concerto would become in the century to follow. After the orchestra’s opening unison, the piano descends in cascading runs—framed by the orchestra—before the music settles into the theme’s sweet phrasing, passed between oboe and bassoon to the piano, and then carried forward by the strings into the second theme. Schumann’s great achievement with this concerto is the way he unites orchestra and piano; they become part of a shared, unified sound. The premiere of the complete concerto took place in Dresden in 1845, with his wife, Clara Schumann, as the soloist.

Ludwig van Beethoven's First Symphony, written in 1799-1800, is not a tentative attempt by some inexperienced and immature composer. No, Beethoven had long been known as one of the foremost pianists and improvisers of his time, and his compositions had already received considerable attention. He had managed to write two piano concertos, eleven piano sonatas and six string quartets - to name a few. But on the other hand, he was not as bold as he might have been in some of his chamber music works. The critics nevertheless thought that the symphony was generally good and that it offered many novelties and "a whole world of ideas". "But too many wind instruments were used, so it sounded more like a brass band than an orchestra". 200 years later, we find the symphony both clear and concise, conventional and strongly related to the symphonies of Mozart and Haydn. But we also notice that there is something more here - a strong personal touch. The driving spirit is not borrowed, it is Beethoven's own signature.

Anna-Karin Larsson is CEO and artistic director, Gustavo Dudamel honorary conductor and Neeme Järvi chief conductor emeritus. The orchestra's owner is the Västra Götaland Region. The Gothenburg Symphony works regularly with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Joana Carneiro, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Christian Zacharias and Anja Bihlmaier.

The Gothenburg Symphony was formed in 1905 and today consists of 109 musicians. The orchestra's base is Gothenburg Concert Hall at Götaplatsen that has gathered music lovers since 1935. Since the 2019-2020 season, Barbara Hannigan is Principal guest conductor. We are also a proud partner of Barbara Hannigan's Equilibrium mentoring program focusing on young singers at the start of their careers. The title Principal Guest Conductor is shared by Pekka Kuusisto from 2025. Wilhelm Stenhammar was the orchestra's chief conductor from 1907 to 1922. He gave the orchestra a strong Nordic profile and invited colleagues Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius to the orchestra. Under the direction of conductor Neeme Järvi from 1982-2004, the orchestra made a series of international tours as well as a hundred disc recordings and established themselves among Europe's leading orchestras. In 1996, the Swedish Riksdag appointed the Gothenburg Symphony as Sweden's National Orchestra. In recent decades, the orchestra has had prominent chief conductors such as Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Mario Venzago and Gustavo Dudamel, following Kent Nagano as Principal Guest conductor.
