Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche is one of the great masterpieces of the orchestral repertoire. Until this point the composer had been known as a scholarly and rather serious young master, but after the premiere of Till in Cologne on 5 November 1895, it became clear that he also possessed a sparkling sense of humour.
Formally the work resembles a rondo, inviting us to follow the various escapades of the title character. Till Eulenspiegel, a famous trickster who had appeared in literature since the Middle Ages, is introduced in unmistakably fairy-tale fashion: the violins begin the piece with a dreamy phrase that seems to sing, “Once upon a time...”.
We then encounter Till as an itinerant preacher, see him fall in love, watch as he is brought to trial and sentenced to death, and finally witness his hanging. No name was inscribed on his gravestone, but an image of an owl and a mirror got to illustrate an old proverb: “Man sees his own faults as little as an owl recognizes his ugliness in looking into a mirror.” Hence the name Eulenspiegel (The Owl’s Mirror).

Mahler’s Fourth Symphony marked a fresh direction in his symphonic writing. It is more concise than Symphony 2 and 3, and the orchestral forces are noticeably reduced. Gone, too, are the programmatic headings Mahler had previously used for each movement, even though he initially worked from a sketch of guiding ideas. The result is often described as a “happier” and more “playful” symphony, almost chamber-like at times, alive with melodies and dance rhythms. Echoes of the Viennese Classics – Haydn above all – mingle with Austrian Ländler and lilting waltz motifs.
The symphony traces a disquieting journey from earthly life towards a heavenly existence beyond death. In the opening movement, sleigh bells and paradisiacal motifs appear alongside march rhythms and a touch of Viennese charm in the strings and winds. The second movement, a scherzo, introduces a ghostly dance of death through a violin solo played with the strings tuned a whole tone higher than usual. Mahler wanted it to sound “like a fiddler – friend Hein (a medieval name for Death) striking up a tune!” The winds add to the eerie atmosphere with unsettling waltz rhythms.
Then comes the third movement, Ruhevoll: a serene and deeply moving set of variations. Mahler described it as containing “divinely joyful and profoundly sorrowful melodies”. It is an adagio in the truest Mahlerian sense. Near the end a powerful orchestral outburst dissolves into “heavenly” sonorities in the strings and harp. The gates of paradise begin to open. “When humankind, now filled with wonder, asks what all this means, the child answers with the fourth movement: This is heavenly life!” the composer explained.
And this heavenly life is brimming with joy, song, dance, music-making – and above all food and drink. The text of the finale comes from the folk poetry collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn, “Das himmlische Leben”, and is set for soprano.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Symphony No. 5 D. 485
No great composer received as little international attention during his lifetime as Schubert. When he died, aged 31, he was practically unknown outside Vienna, and in Vienna he was best known for his songs. Schubert's vocal singing style is also found in his instrumental compositions.
Franz Schubert's Fifth Symphony, without trumpets and timpani, is a youthful masterpiece – written when he was 19. The work carries a lightness, elegance and luminosity. Mozart had been dead for 25 years and his music was more popular than ever. For a young composer, Mozart was the model to emulate. Symphony No. 5 is a chamber symphonic gem in which every instrument is allowed to breathe. Parts of the melody echo in the lower instruments as accompaniment, a technique that can be heard throughout the symphony's four movements. The opening Allegro movement bubbles with energy, and the finale after the minuet sparkles with playful brilliance. The slow second movement is perhaps the most original. The singable melodies (cantilenas) carry an operatic calm. The duet between violins and woodwinds has a dreamy sharpness.
A couple of months before the work was completed (1816), Schubert wrote in his diary: "O Mozart, immortal Mozart! What countless impressions, of a brighter and better life, you have stamped on our souls."

Attire of the Rose Cavalier and Duet
Ochs-Walzes
Tenor Aria
Breakfast scene

Closing Duet
Richard Strauss's opera Der Rosenkavalier (1910) is a tribute to an idealized Vienna, where 18th-century elegance meets late-Romantic waltzes with generous orchestral sound. The libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal is an exuberant tangle of love intrigues and confusions, reminiscent of Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro.
We meet the young nobleman Octavian, lover of the elderly Marschallin. When he is commissioned to deliver a silver rose as an engagement gift to Sophie, who is to marry the buffoonish Baron Ochs, the two young people fall in love with each other. Plots and complications follow, but in the end the Marschallin lets her young lover go - with sadness, insight and dignity.
The suite opens with the intense horns depicting the love meeting between the Marshallin and Octavian. We are led on to the famous scene where Octavian presents the silver rose to Sophie, shimmeringly embodied by harp, flute and celesta. Baron Ochs' clumsy intrusion breaks the mood and the waltzes begin, full of charm and comedy. Towards the end, the emotional climax of the opera is anticipated, where young love triumphs and the music finally culminates in the iconic Rosenkavalier Waltz – a glittering reflection of Vienna's golden age.
Beethoven really had to struggle with his music. He worked meticulously on every detail, and the work is still extant in his sketchbooks. Even the seemingly obvious opening of the Fifth Symphony, the knocking on the door of fate that immediately seizes the listener and which seems to be such an unshakable thought, undergoes a series of transformations in the sketches that are difficult to understand in retrospect.
The energetic scherzo transition in the finale has undergone countless phases of development. The sketches also show that Beethoven originally did not at all envision a finale in a triumphant major, but in a minor key. Beethoven's Fifth is certainly worthy of all the admiring attention it receives. It is the result of the tribulations of a hard-working genius.

Béla Bartók (1881–1945)
The Miraculous Mandarin, Suite
The music originates from a ballet—a wild, lurid tale about desperate characters living on the fringes of society. Set in a seedy slum, the story revolves around a hunt for money: two greedy men force a woman to sell herself and then assault one of her clients—a Chinese mandarin (a wealthy man). The brutal beating results in his death.
Bartók’s score for the drama is often aggressive and violent, featuring Oriental-inspired sonorities and masterful use of the brass section; the Mandarin is characterized by a fateful, descending interval. Yet, there are also gentler passages that add nuance to the psychological portrayal.
A planned 1926 performance of the ballet in Cologne resulted in the conductor facing the threat of legal action. Two scheduled performances in Budapest were officially banned. The ballet was not permitted in the composer’s homeland until after his death. The concert version fared better, spreading across the globe following its premiere in 1928.
Barbara Hannigan herself has said: “They shouldn’t even have called it Miraculous Mandarin .... It’s so much more about her! That programme is truly a mythical programme: it’s dealing with the supernatural, what we think of as magical powers. It’s dealing with that which is beyond us as humans.”

Symphony No. 4 E minor Op 98
Allegro non troppo
Andante moderato
Allegro giocoso
Allegro energico e passionato (Tema con variazioni)
Brahms himself conducted the first performance of the work. This took place in Meiningen on October 25, 1885, but was not an immediate success, even though Brahms once again composed melodically accurate and thoughtfully orchestrated music.
What made it all a bit dubious was that the music was not particularly easy to buy at all. The audience found too much melancholy and there was talk of autumn music. The simile is actually not so crazy at all, if you also consider that autumn is not only dark, but also has strong colors. It has been said that at this time Brahms was studying the ancient Greek tragedian Sophocles' drama Oedipus in detail, and possibly some of the moods from there have crept into the music.
Today, Brahms's Fourth Symphony has a high status. It is regarded as the crown of a very symphonic creation, and as the testament of a master. It is a deep, gentle and slightly resigned music with rare well-balanced form and character. And the finale has been especially admired with its eight-bar passacaglia theme presented by the brass in rigorously executed and artful variations.

Ludwig van Beethoven's First Symphony, written in 1799-1800, is not a tentative attempt by some inexperienced and immature composer. No, Beethoven had long been known as one of the foremost pianists and improvisers of his time, and his compositions had already received considerable attention. He had managed to write two piano concertos, eleven piano sonatas and six string quartets - to name a few. But on the other hand, he was not as bold as he might have been in some of his chamber music works.
The critics nevertheless thought that the symphony was generally good and that it offered many novelties and "a whole world of ideas". "But too many wind instruments were used, so it sounded more like a brass band than an orchestra". 200 years later, we find the symphony both clear and concise, conventional and strongly related to the symphonies of Mozart and Haydn. But we also notice that there is something more here - a strong personal touch. The driving spirit is not borrowed, it is Beethoven's own signature.

Antonín Dvorák (1841-1904)
Symphony No. 8 Op 88
A few years before Antonín Dvorák left for America, the Eighth Symphony grew during long walks in the woods and fields. The Eighth Symphony is the result of a conscious search for peace and harmony. When the storm sometimes roars for the sake of contrast, it only blows away the dry leaves and brings fresh air with it. It is a happily smiling music, a simple, folk fiddler's music that deviates from the strict symphonic traditions.
The first movement begins with a sonorous cello theme that then returns twice during the movement; in the introduction to the development and in the recapitulation. The movement closely follows the sonata form despite the great changes in emotion. The slow movement is an adagio in C minor that is built up from a string of beautiful episodes. Then follows a graceful and elastic waltz before the finale once again presents a short introduction consisting of a trumpet solo. This solo also recurs a few times, including as a pianissimo accompaniment to solo flute and played by trumpets and horns. An outward-looking coda concludes the symphony.
On 2 February 1890, this G major symphony was premiered with the composer himself conducting the National Theatre Orchestra in Prague, and he also conducted performances in London and Frankfurt shortly afterwards. The symphony would soon triumph around the world, and alongside the Ninth Symphony (From the New World), written in America, it became the most beloved of his symphonies. The symphony was dedicated to the "Bohemian Franz Joseph Academy for the Promotion of Art and Literature", in thanks for Dvorák becoming its honorary member.

In 1844, Robert Schumann had his first serious nervous breakdown, which was followed by several others. The family moved to the quieter Dresden. The Second Symphony became a kind of recovery project. Unusually, all four movements are written in C major or C minor. This can create problems. But Schumann skillfully avoids the work becoming static and harmonically monotonous by inserting contrasting elements - different rhythms, tempi and short key changes within each movement.
The first movement begins with the trumpets playing a chorale-like fanfare over the strings. That fanfare returns in the brass in the second movement and also concludes the entire symphony. Like Beethoven, Schumann puts the fast scherzo movement in second place - an incredibly virtuoso perpetuum mobile in the strings and two slower trio sections with woodwinds. A funny two-note motif is repeated through almost the entire movement like an encouraging mantra.
The Adagio movement is truly the symphony's emotional center, like a long, melancholic opera aria with poignant solos in the woodwinds. Schumann is said to have been so moved while writing it that he had to take a long break before tackling the joyful, grand final movement which, in addition to robust, march-like elements, uses a simple theme in solo oboe from Beethoven's song An die ferne Geliebte. It was Schumann's tribute to his wife Clara.

The choir was founded in 1917 by cousins Elsa and Wilhelm Stenhammar. Elsa Stenhammar was one of the driving forces in turn-of-the-century choir life in Gothenburg and became the choir's first rehearser. On December 8, 1917, the choir debuted in Beethoven's Choir Fantasy with Wilhelm Stenhammar as soloist at the grand piano. As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program.
The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir has participated in concerts in, among other places, the Royal Albert Hall and Canterbury Cathedral in England, as well as participated with the Gothenburg Symphony in the annual music festival in the Canary Islands and on a tour to China.

Camille Saint-Saëns (1835–1921)
Cello Concerto No. 1
Like Mozart and Mendelssohn, Camille Saint-Saëns was a precocious child prodigy. By the age of 10, he could play all of Beethoven's piano sonatas from memory. During his long life, he composed in most genres: symphonies, chamber music, opera and choral works. He is perhaps best known for Carnival of the Animals and Cello Concerto No. 1 – called "the perfect cello concerto" by Shostakovich.
No frills. No long orchestral introduction. With a dramatic orchestral chord followed by the soloist's fiery entrance, the listener is thrown straight into a musical whirlwind – as if the cello had suddenly acquired a voice that could no longer be contained. Through the concerto's three movements, Saint-Saëns lets the cello show its full range: from lyrical warmth to virtuoso brilliance, from glowing temperament to heartfelt reflection. The music demands total presence from both soloist and audience. There is certainly time for rest and recovery, but absolutely no break – the three movements are composed in one long, continuous flow. The sudden attack of the opening retains its romantic shock effect until the final triumphant gathering of power.
The premiere of the cello concerto took place in Paris in 1873 – since then considered by many to be one of the greatest.

The story of Robert Schumann and the piano unfolded over the course of his entire life—initially with passion and joy, and later, amidst depression and physical (as well as psychological) challenges, pushing him to the breaking point. In a famous essay from 1839, he muses on the future direction of the piano concerto as a genre. Schumann asks himself which genius will succeed in transforming the interaction between piano and orchestra from a mere circus act into a true symbiosis of sonic splendor.
From the very first notes, it is as if we are hearing the blueprint for what the piano concerto would become in the century to follow. After the orchestra’s opening unison, the piano descends in cascading runs—framed by the orchestra—before the music settles into the theme’s sweet phrasing, passed between oboe and bassoon to the piano, and then carried forward by the strings into the second theme. Schumann’s great achievement with this concerto is the way he unites orchestra and piano; they become part of a shared, unified sound. The premiere of the complete concerto took place in Dresden in 1845, with his wife, Clara Schumann, as the soloist.

With his broad musical experience (he played cornet, percussion and violin), Nielsen has always been popular with orchestras: he is a "musicians' composer" whose parts are almost always rich in content and challenging.
The Fourth Symphony (1916) is dense and intense, but there are also peaceful islands of recovery. The symphony opens with a powerful, completely surprising first movement, moves through a graceful allegretto (in which the wind instruments initially dominate) and a glowing third movement before ending with a blazing finale in which two drummers duel violently - incited and supported by the rest of the orchestra.
This is how Nielsen himself described the symphony: "The title (The Inextinguishable) suggests something that only music itself can express: the elementary will to live. /.../ Life is indelible and inextinguishable, yesterday, today and tomorrow, life was, is and will exist in struggle, conflict, generation and annihilation."
