Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Eine kleine Nachtmusik
Allegro
Romanze: Andante
Menuetto e Trio
Rondo: Allegro
One might wonder if there is a more beautifully crafted and polished gem than Eine kleine Nachtmusik - so appealing, so perfect. Nachtmusik is German for "serenade", and when it was composed, Mozart had already composed twelve serenades. Compared to the earlier serenades, it truly lives up to its name - a little one. It becomes a miniature, a simple, classically pure and easily accessible trifle, in terms of scope. The earlier serenades could be 45 minutes long. A serenade should also be intended to be played outdoors, but that does not work at all with Eine kleine Nachtmusik with its lovely and intimate string music.
Mozart included Eine kleine Nachtmusik in his own catalogue of compositions in Vienna on August 10, 1787, and listed it as having five movements. There was another minuet - but this movement disappeared early in the work's history and has never been found. It has also not been possible to find out why Mozart wrote this lovely entertainment music. In any case, it does not seem to have been a commission, but that he wrote music out of his own interest.
It has been surprising that the mature master of cosmopolitan Vienna interrupted the demanding work of orchestrating the exciting nighttime moods of the opera Don Giovanni in favor of this delicacy. Was it the contrast he needed? Was the inspiration pressing?

Symphony No. 4 E minor Op 98
Allegro non troppo
Andante moderato
Allegro giocoso
Allegro energico e passionato (Tema con variazioni)
Brahms himself conducted the first performance of the work. This took place in Meiningen on October 25, 1885, but was not an immediate success, even though Brahms once again composed melodically accurate and thoughtfully orchestrated music.
What made it all a bit dubious was that the music was not particularly easy to buy at all. The audience found too much melancholy and there was talk of autumn music. The simile is actually not so crazy at all, if you also consider that autumn is not only dark, but also has strong colors. It has been said that at this time Brahms was studying the ancient Greek tragedian Sophocles' drama Oedipus in detail, and possibly some of the moods from there have crept into the music.
Today, Brahms's Fourth Symphony has a high status. It is regarded as the crown of a very symphonic creation, and as the testament of a master. It is a deep, gentle and slightly resigned music with rare well-balanced form and character. And the finale has been especially admired with its eight-bar passacaglia theme presented by the brass in rigorously executed and artful variations.

Beethoven composed over 700 works during his 45-year career. One of the most beloved is his only violin concerto—a work with an unusually dramatic backstory. Legend has it that the concerto was not completed until just before its premiere in Vienna on December 23, 1806. Consequently, the soloist Franz Clement—to whom the work is dedicated—reportedly had to play parts of the music directly from the manuscript. At the premiere, he even inserted an improvised cadenza of his own, which he is said to have played with his violin held upside down.
For its time, the concerto was bold in several respects: it was unusually long, featured a larger orchestra than previous concertos, and included a virtuosic, demanding solo part. It is perhaps not surprising that it took fifty years for the work to become a staple of the concert repertoire.
Musically, Beethoven blends the Classical style with something new and Romantic. The lengthy orchestral introduction presents and develops the musical material before the violin enters. Soloist and orchestra then interact and evolve together throughout the concerto; they share themes, respond to one another, and take turns leading and following.
The violin concerto is cherished by many because it is not merely a display of virtuosity, but a living musical dialogue.

Joseph Haydn traveled to London for the first time in 1791. By then, he was already Europe’s most celebrated symphonist. His trips across the Channel continued in subsequent years, offering the composer something new: an orchestra larger than the one he was accustomed to, and an audience that expected to be surprised. Symphony No. 102 in B-flat major is the tenth of his twelve acclaimed London symphonies.
The form is, of course, classical, comprising four movements. Right from the slow introduction, the “Father of the Symphony” plays with the listener’s expectations. The theme emerges with natural ease and elegance, only to suddenly erupt into the Allegro. A lively musical dialogue ensues; Haydn allows ideas to pass between instruments, be interrupted or shortened, and reappear in a different guise.
The work premiered in May 1795 at the King’s Theatre under Haydn’s own direction, and he certainly did not disappoint. The concert is associated with the venue’s enormous chandelier, which hung above the audience. Seconds after the vigorous, effervescent finale had faded away, the chandelier broke loose from its mountings. Miraculously, no one was hurt; the audience had already left their seats and rushed enthusiastically toward the stage to acclaim the composer.

Bartók had written a violin concerto as early as 1907, though it remained unpublished during his lifetime. Thirty years later, the violinist Zoltán Székely asked him for a new concerto. At first, Bartók was reluctant; he had envisioned a large-scale set of variations instead. He had already begun work in May 1937, before pausing to compose the Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion. He also interrupted his work in the autumn of 1938 to write Contrasts—for clarinet, violin, and piano—which had been commissioned by Benny Goodman. Bartók was a controversial figure at the time; he forbade the rebroadcasting of his radio concerts in Italy and Germany. In a private letter, he claimed that Hungary was drawing closer to the "gangster and murderer regimes" of those states. He planned to emigrate, "away from the vicinity of this tainted country."
Yet the music is devoid of any trace of despondency. Like the great classical masters Beethoven and Mozart, he was able to rise above the mundane—evident in the two outer movements, which possess a youthful vitality; the third movement is even set in 3/4 time and features variations with a folk-song character. Variations also define the exquisite middle movement: the first variation actually employs the timpani as a melodic instrument, while the next boasts a rich array of sonorities from the harp, woodwinds, and celesta, gradually giving way to an increasingly prominent role for the soloist. Ultimately, the music takes on an almost dance-like quality. As is often the case in troubled times, the music fulfilled a greater purpose: instilling resilience, hope, and the courage to live. By the time of the premiere in Amsterdam in 1939—featuring Székely and the Concertgebouw Orchestra—Bartók was already en route to the United States. The emigration took place in October 1940.

Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche is one of the great masterpieces of the orchestral repertoire. Until this point the composer had been known as a scholarly and rather serious young master, but after the premiere of Till in Cologne on 5 November 1895, it became clear that he also possessed a sparkling sense of humour.
Formally the work resembles a rondo, inviting us to follow the various escapades of the title character. Till Eulenspiegel, a famous trickster who had appeared in literature since the Middle Ages, is introduced in unmistakably fairy-tale fashion: the violins begin the piece with a dreamy phrase that seems to sing, “Once upon a time...”.
We then encounter Till as an itinerant preacher, see him fall in love, watch as he is brought to trial and sentenced to death, and finally witness his hanging. No name was inscribed on his gravestone, but an image of an owl and a mirror got to illustrate an old proverb: “Man sees his own faults as little as an owl recognizes his ugliness in looking into a mirror.” Hence the name Eulenspiegel (The Owl’s Mirror).

Compared to the Fourth Symphony, Sibelius's Fifth Symphony is colorful and vibrant, heroic and accessible. But equally it required more work than the brooding and introverted four. No other work caused him so much trouble.
"Walked in the cold spring sun. Had a violent impression of Symphony No. 5. The new one!" "Saw today (April 21, 1915) ten before eleven 16 swans. One of the greatest impressions of my life! ... The sound of the same woodwind type as the cranes, but without tremolo. The swans are closer to the trumpet although the sarrusophone sound is clear. Nature mystery and life's woe! The fifth symphony's final theme."
The first movement consists of two parts. The first of these begins with a true pastoral idyll, with signal horn motifs and responding woodwinds. Throughout this part the experience of nature is strong, but in the second part of the movement the music takes on a more scherzo-like character. In the slow movement, the idyllic returns, this time with a graceful, almost rococo elegance. "In the background wander the ever-changing cloud formations of the clarinets, bassoons and horns." The finale's main theme shines through an impressionistic shimmer of strings, which contrasts with the swan theme of the trumpets. And then the doomed, severely isolated chords that end this architectural masterpiece.

Beethoven really had to struggle with his music. He worked meticulously on every detail, and the work is still extant in his sketchbooks. Even the seemingly obvious opening of the Fifth Symphony, the knocking on the door of fate that immediately seizes the listener and which seems to be such an unshakable thought, undergoes a series of transformations in the sketches that are difficult to understand in retrospect.
The energetic scherzo transition in the finale has undergone countless phases of development. The sketches also show that Beethoven originally did not at all envision a finale in a triumphant major, but in a minor key. Beethoven's Fifth is certainly worthy of all the admiring attention it receives. It is the result of the tribulations of a hard-working genius.

Paul Dukas (1865-1935)
L'apprenti sorcier
L'apprenti sorcier (The Sorcerer's Apprentice) is the most famous work by the French composer Paul Dukas. It premiered in May 1897 in Paris with the composer himself conducting. The piece is based on Goethe's poem Der Zauberlehrling, about a sorcerer who leaves his apprentice to fetch water. But instead of doing it himself, the apprentice conjures up a broom to do the job for him.
Dukas illustrates the broom with a rhythmic theme in the bassoon. The water is depicted through leaps and splashing cymbals. But the apprentice is not fully trained and loses control of the situation. The broom never stops fetching water. The room floods. The apprentice tries to chop the broom in half with an axe, which only gives rise to more brooms.
A contributing factor to the music's great popularity was Walt Disney's animated film Fantasia from 1940, starring Mickey Mouse. Dukas' romantic and magical works stand today as a clear precursor, along with Korngold and Holst, to John Williams' shimmering film music.

Peter Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)
Symphony No. 6 Pathetique Op 74
Adagio;Allegro non troppo - Allegro con grazia - Allegro molto vivace - Finale:Adagio lamentoso
Few symphonies contain as many outbursts of emotion and sudden mood swings as Tchaikovsky's Sixth, with the telling title Pathétique ("passionate suffering"). It reflects his manic-depressive personality, he suffered throughout his life from crises and often struggled with illness and depression. Tchaikovsky's death in Saint Petersburg, just nine days after he conducted the premiere, also gave the work a tragic aura right from the start. It was even said that the music deliberately foreshadowed his own death, which occurred after he drank cholera-tainted water. Even today, musicologists disagree whether it was an accident or a forced suicide, to avoid public scandal as a homosexual.
Is the sixth symphony really a self-composed requiem? This theory is fueled by the "dark" key of B minor, which stands for great passion and tragedy, and by the unusual structure. The main motif that runs throughout the work consists of a plaintive, descending second interval. The gloomy character of the symphony is clear already in the first movement, with its slow, dark introduction. The second movement is reminiscent of Don José's flower aria from Bizet's opera Carmen, which Tchaikovsky greatly admired. Towards the end of the movement there is a chorale-like funeral march, and even a quote from the Russian Orthodox funeral liturgy. The second movement provides some lightening, and Tchaikovsky wrote it in an elegant 5/4 time signature, which is a fairly common time signature in Russian folk music. The "limping" character makes the movement almost humorous, despite the loving waltz or minuet-like style.
In the third movement he returns to the march as idea, but it begins as an cheerful scherzo that gradually unfolds in its full life-affirming power. The fourth movement is the most famous in the symphony, and is partly reminiscent of a mournful requiem. The main theme is characterized by sighing motifs, and at the end the music fades into a low string chord in B minor.
Tchaikovsky considered the symphony to be his most important, most personal composition, but the premiere was received cautiously.

Edward Elgar (1857 – 1934)
Variations on an Original Theme (Enigma)
The word enigma (riddle) says something about one of English music's most notorious orchestral suites. Part of the puzzle can be found in the subtitles of the different variation sets (14 in number) where name initials are preferably written. These recall various people who had a tangible impact on Elgar. From his wife, a musician, to close friends. Not infrequently their names form the melodic and even rhythmic variations which the original theme undergoes, but more clearly they are found in the temperament of the movements and sonorous execution of the characteristic of his friends. In everything from almost didactic interpretations, such as the sixth movement's play with string changes, which recalls one of his viola adepts' struggle with this very thing, or as in the most beloved ninth movement ("Nimrod"), where the conversations with Elgar's publisher shine through through the numerous musical references to Beethoven.
The second riddle of the Enigma Variations remains unsolved to this day. It is said that there is a red thread hidden through the variations, identified by some as a melody, by others as an element of form, but we probably do best not to look too closely, but to do as Elgar emphasized already at the premiere: "but the work can be listened to to as a 'piece of music' free of any extra-musical references.” It is in the sound that the music has survived the centuries, the enigma is probably ultimately woven into a creative process that has long since ended.
