Allegro ma non troppo - Andante molto mosso - Allegro - Allegro - Allegretto Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 in F major is one of his most naturalistic and lyrical works. It was written in parallel with the dramatic Fifth Symphony, and they were premiered at the same time on December 8, 1808 in Vienna. Pyotr Tjajkovskij (1840-1893) Symphony No 5 Pyotr Tchaikovsky had been financially independent for a long time when, in the summer of 1888, he set out on his fifth symphony. A wealthy widow, Nadezjda von Meck, had been so captivated by his compositions that she gave him a generously increased annual maintenance. After four months of work on the symphony, he wrote to Madame Meck that he was almost finished with his 'symphony of fate'. The motif of fate in the Fifth comes creeping in the low register of the clarinets. You are immediately captivated by the simplicity and harmony by sensitively placed wind solos. The second movement allows two emotionally charged motifs to alternate with each other. One is presented by the horn and the other by the oboe. But here too, the motif of fate comes into play. The third movement contributes contrast in the form of a well-polished elegant waltz, the dance form that so many times has drawn masterpieces from Tchaikovsky's pen. It begins as if it were a ballet scene and only gradually does the music take on a symphonic character. The dark thoughts do not escape even in the whirlwinds of the ball. In the finale, the fate theme undergoes a transformation. The tempo becomes more march-like and shifts in major - it gradually even becomes grandiose.

In Serenade for tenor, horn and strings from 1943, English poets from the 15th to 19th centuries contribute texts that revolve around the night. Six songs as both rest and threat. Two horn solos frame the work and the natural tones create with their – to the unaccustomed – almost false-sounding intervals, an ambivalent sound space between light and darkness. Clearly chiseled movements characterize the serenade. This applies to both the almost parading Nocturne and the more ghostly Dirge, with its trait of mechanical inexorability. Britten works sparingly, and often ties the motif to the horn, where a contrapuntal dialogue arises between horn and tenor soloist. The harmonics move freely, tension is created through shifts, not through traditional resolution. Perhaps the restraint and the mix of threat and hope are the composer's way of relating to the horrors that unfolded in the midst of a burning war. Such were the conditions when Britten wrote his work, in an England where the concept of night was synonymous with fearful anticipation of the rumble of approaching German bombers.

At the very first performance of the German composer Max Bruch’s final version in 1868, the audience embraced the work at once. Bruch’s thoughtful approach to instrumentation allows both soloist and orchestra to shine – their interplay flows with melodic richness and expressive warmth. Like Felix Mendelssohn, Max Bruch was a musical prodigy. He wrote his first symphony and a string quartet at the age of fourteen. Yet it must have been a strange fate for a composer whose works were widely performed and admired to be celebrated, for the rest of his long life, almost exclusively for a single piece: the Violin Concerto in G minor. The world’s great violinists adored it, the public adored it, but Bruch eventually grew weary of players who wanted to perform only that concerto. Unfortunately, he had sold the rights to his publisher early on, meaning he received no income from the immense number of performances during his lifetime. Bruch described the first movement as a prelude – a long one – which leads almost imperceptibly into the second movement. Like Mendelssohn, he lets the soloist enter swiftly rather than opening with the full orchestra. Here, inspired melodies unfold in dialogue with the orchestra, interrupted by two brief solo cadenzas. The violin begins the adagio with a nostalgic, heartfelt line, later followed by brilliant solo writing that avoids any hint of undue sentimentality. A short pause leads into an energetic allegro, where a Hungarian-inspired dance takes command, complete with virtuosic solo passages and a romantic theme that captivates and seduces.

At the beginning of 1786, Mozart worked most intensively on the opera buffa The Marriage of Figaro. But as always, the work was interrupted now and then by other commissions and by other works that were begging to be written down. Mozart himself probably premiered his 24th piano concerto on April 7 at the Burgtheater in Vienna. After this very personal and open-hearted music, he was able to return to the comedy in Figaro and complete the opera without further interruptions. The main theme in the first movement is presented in unison in the orchestra and is allowed to play the role of a kind of chorus throughout the movement. When the piano enters, it takes up another theme, which nevertheless shows a certain kinship. Mozart had only used this method once before, and that was in the Piano Concerto in D minor, No. 20. He did not write any more concertos in minor! This first movement is more symphonic than concertante, and the orchestra is the largest that Mozart prescribed in both concerto and symphony contexts. To this challenge, the easy larghetto stands out as a bright contrast, even if the attentive listener notices the tears behind the smile.

But he is seduced by Delilah who persuades him to cut off his hair, where his strength lies. The music we hear is a wild party, a bacchanal, while dancing in the temple.
