Allegro ma non troppo - Andante molto mosso - Allegro - Allegro - Allegretto Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 in F major is one of his most naturalistic and lyrical works. It was written in parallel with the dramatic Fifth Symphony, and they were premiered at the same time on December 8, 1808 in Vienna. Beethoven himself named the Pastoral Symphony, which reveals a new side of him - the thoughtful, naturalistic and soulful. Together with the Fifth Symphony, it marks a new, more narrative and emotional stage in his work. With its five movements and descriptive titles such as “Awakening of Joyful Feelings on Arrival in the Countryside” and “Scene by the Stream”, it differs in character from his other symphonies. Beethoven emphasized in a famous quote that the work should not be seen as an exact nature painting, but as an expression of the feelings that nature arouses. The thunderstorm of the fourth movement with swirling strings, drums and winds is particularly famous, and illustrates the dramatic forces of nature. The last movement is the shepherd's song with happy and grateful feelings. The symphony reflects Beethoven's strong love for country life and every summer he escaped the noise of the city to seek peace in the countryside. He found inspiration for the work in the village of Nussdorf just north of Vienna, and to this day you can walk along the path that bears his name – Beethovengang. Andreas Konvicka

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Eine kleine Nachtmusik Allegro Romanze: Andante Menuetto e Trio Rondo: Allegro One might wonder if there is a more beautifully crafted and polished gem than Eine kleine Nachtmusik - so appealing, so perfect. Nachtmusik is German for "serenade", and when it was composed, Mozart had already composed twelve serenades. Compared to the earlier serenades, it truly lives up to its name - a little one. It becomes a miniature, a simple, classically pure and easily accessible trifle, in terms of scope. The earlier serenades could be 45 minutes long. A serenade should also be intended to be played outdoors, but that does not work at all with Eine kleine Nachtmusik with its lovely and intimate string music. Mozart included Eine kleine Nachtmusik in his own catalogue of compositions in Vienna on August 10, 1787, and listed it as having five movements. There was another minuet - but this movement disappeared early in the work's history and has never been found. It has also not been possible to find out why Mozart wrote this lovely entertainment music. In any case, it does not seem to have been a commission, but that he wrote music out of his own interest. It has been surprising that the mature master of cosmopolitan Vienna interrupted the demanding work of orchestrating the exciting nighttime moods of the opera Don Giovanni in favor of this delicacy. Was it the contrast he needed? Was the inspiration pressing?

Lohengrin (1848) is Wagner's last Romantic opera, and centers on the knight Lohengrin. The popular prelude to the first act, which the author Thomas Mann considered "the pinnacle of Romanticism", is often performed as a stand-alone in concerts. Through various musical themes and motifs, we are led into the world of passion, mystery and heroism of the first act. The aria that follows in tonight's program, "Im fernem Land", is called Lohengrin's Grail story - where the myth of the holy vessel is said to symbolize human longing.

In 1844, Robert Schumann had his first serious nervous breakdown, which was followed by several others. The family moved to the quieter Dresden. The Second Symphony became a kind of recovery project. Unusually, all four movements are written in C major or C minor. This can create problems. But Schumann skillfully avoids the work becoming static and harmonically monotonous by inserting contrasting elements - different rhythms, tempi and short key changes within each movement. The first movement begins with the trumpets playing a chorale-like fanfare over the strings. That fanfare returns in the brass in the second movement and also concludes the entire symphony. Like Beethoven, Schumann puts the fast scherzo movement in second place - an incredibly virtuoso perpetuum mobile in the strings and two slower trio sections with woodwinds. A funny two-note motif is repeated through almost the entire movement like an encouraging mantra. The Adagio movement is truly the symphony's emotional center, like a long, melancholic opera aria with poignant solos in the woodwinds. Schumann is said to have been so moved while writing it that he had to take a long break before tackling the joyful, grand final movement which, in addition to robust, march-like elements, uses a simple theme in solo oboe from Beethoven's song An die ferne Geliebte. It was Schumann's tribute to his wife Clara.

Alexander Borodin (1833-1887) Symphony No. 2 Alexander Borodin composed his second symphony over a long period of time, between 1869 and 1876, and continued to polish it until his death. In his early works, he was influenced by classical music that originated in Russian folk music. The second symphony shows a developed and more original style. The symphony opens with a powerful unison theme that gives associations to Beethoven's Fifth. There is plenty of drama there. Parts of the symphony's material were also originally written for the abandoned opera Prince Igor (which he then picked up again in 1874). In the light and exuberant second movement, you can hear how Borodin was inspired by new brass instruments that he got to see and feel thanks to Rimsky-Korsakov. The finale is an exuberant and grand finale in major.

Orkesterkommentar: Till Göteborgs Symfonikers stora projekt hör framförandet av Liszts samtliga symfoniska dikter. Minns ni det? Idén kom från förre intendenten Sven Kruckenberg som med iver och envishet såg till att Liszts 13 tondikter och två symfonier framfördes i Göteborgs Konserthus. Projektet påbörjades med Dantesymfonin den 17 oktober 1968 under Norman Del Mars ledning och avslutades med Heroïde funèbre den 28 oktober 1977 med Peter Maag som dirigent. Ett riktigt maratonlopp! Reaktionerna var blandade men den följande diskussionen livlig och uppfriskande. Sven Kruckenberg minns själv: ”En stor del av orkestern förstod sig inte på Liszt, men många i publiken tog emot honom med intresse. ”Synen på Liszts musik har i mångt och mycket förändrats sedan dess vilket Jan Ling bland annat tar upp i sin intressanta bok Franz Liszt och 1800-talets konstmusik (Gidlunds, 2009). Franz Liszt är tveklöst en av senromantikens stora förgrundsfigurer. Han mer eller mindre uppfann den symfoniska dikten som enligt ordboken är en ”orkesterkomposition i fri form och symfonisk stil med utpräglat programmatiskt innehåll, vanligtvis ensatsig”. Les préludes betecknas i Liszts verkförteckning också som Symfonisk dikt nr 3. Pluralformen Les préludes är något förbryllande. Liszt skrev och framförde verket första gången 1848 som preludium till sitt stora kör- och orkesterverk De fyra elementen. När stycket reviderats och första gången spelades i sin nya form i Weimar 1854 lade Liszt till raden ”Efter Lamartine” på titelbladet. Där syftar han på en dikt av den franske lyrikern Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869) som ingår i samlingen Méditations poétiques från 1820. Titelns pluralform får sin förklaring i Lamartines rader: ”Vad annat är vårt liv än en följd av preludier till den okända sång, vars högtidliga begynnelsetoner stäms upp av döden? Kärleken är varje tillvaros strålande morgonrodnad. Men vilket livsöde finns, vars första ljuva lycka inte brutits av något oväder, som med sin dödande stormvind krossat dess illusioner och med sin olycksbringande blixt splittrat dess altare?” Les préludes är typisk för den eklektiske Liszt. Här finns arvet från den preussiska militärmusiken (som även är tongivande hos Liszts förebild Beethoven) och romantikens ljuva klanger i skön förening med den typ av tematisk bearbetning (metamorfosteknik) och kromatisk äventyrlighet som Wagner skulle dra till sin spets. Liszt var för övrigt en stor inspirationskälla för Wagner som sedermera blev Liszts svärson. Les préludes fick ny aktualitet i 1940-talets Tyskland när Hitler valde stycket som signaturmusik till journalfilmer från nazisternas krigståg i Europa. George Bizet (1838-1875) L'Arlésienne Suite No. 1 Preludium Menuett Adagietto Carillon Author Alphonse Daudet depicted the countryside and people of exotic Provence. One of his most beloved short stories he called The Girl from Arles, which he expanded into a drama in five acts. The play eventually became an opera by Francesco Cilea (1897), but the stage music composed by Georges Bizet was most appreciated. In total, he contributed 27 short vignettes for a small chamber orchestra of 26 musicians, the Théatre de Vaudeville could not afford more. Bizet himself contributed free piano playing. A few movements were written for choir. The first performance on 1 October 1872 was a complete flop, and the play was closed after 21 performances for half a salon. The author exclaimed: "It was a dazzling fiasco with the most charming music in the world, costumes of silk and velvet, and Opéra-Comique scenery. I left the theater dejected, and with the same laughter that pierced the tragic scenes still in my ears, I resolved to write no more plays." But Bizet believed in his music and was eager to save it, so he immediately compiled four of the pieces into an orchestral suite, while arranging them for large symphony orchestra, retaining the important saxophone part; an exciting, new instrument that until now has been mostly used for experiments. This first suite was premiered six weeks after the stage premiere, and was an immediate success. He did not keep the chronology of the drama, it was more important that the movements create a unity. The plot is very simple but told with psychological depth in a dreamy and poetic way. "His name was Jan. He only had eyes for one - a little girl from Arles, dressed in velvet and lace, whom he had once met in the market place in Arles. At his house - to begin with - the party was not looked upon kindly. It was said that the girl was coquettish and her parents were not from the area, but Jan wanted his girl from Arles at all costs. He said: I will die if I don't get her." These few words capture and summarize the whole story. Everything revolves around her, but the girl from Arles never appears on stage, and he takes his own life when it becomes clear to him that she has another lover. Those who know their Christmas music recognize the Kings' March in the opening movement.

The Gothenburg Symphony was formed in 1905 and today consists of 109 musicians. The orchestra's base is Gothenburg Concert Hall at Götaplatsen that has gathered music lovers since 1935. Since the 2019-2020 season, Barbara Hannigan is Principal guest conductor. We are also a proud partner of Barbara Hannigan's Equilibrium mentoring program focusing on young singers at the start of their careers. The title Principal Guest Conductor is shared by Pekka Kuusisto from 2025. Wilhelm Stenhammar was the orchestra's chief conductor from 1907 to 1922. He gave the orchestra a strong Nordic profile and invited colleagues Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius to the orchestra. Under the direction of conductor Neeme Järvi from 1982-2004, the orchestra made a series of international tours as well as a hundred disc recordings and established themselves among Europe's leading orchestras. In 1996, the Swedish Riksdag appointed the Gothenburg Symphony as Sweden's National Orchestra. In recent decades, the orchestra has had prominent chief conductors such as Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Mario Venzago and Gustavo Dudamel, following Kent Nagano as Principal Guest conductor. Lohengrin (1848) is Wagner's last Romantic opera, and centers on the knight Lohengrin. The popular prelude to the first act, which the author Thomas Mann considered "the pinnacle of Romanticism", is often performed as a stand-alone in concerts. Through various musical themes and motifs, we are led into the world of passion, mystery and heroism of the first act. The aria that follows in tonight's program, "Im fernem Land", is called Lohengrin's Grail story - where the myth of the holy vessel is said to symbolize human longing.
