The rhapsody was a perfect tool for provincial exploration - genuine or newly composed folk songs were arranged and assembled into a kind of more elaborate suite. Not even the elegant Ravel, known for clarity and refined orchestral effects, could resist the temptation. His favourite Chabrier had already composed the successful rhapsody Espana in 1883, and he himself had been attracted by Spanish tones in Habanera (1895) for two pianos - which was orchestrated and incorporated into Rapsodie espagnole - and Alborada del gracioso (1905). So the foundation was already laid when he wrote his first major orchestral work Rapsodie espagnole in 1908. The work flows with sensual orchestral sounds, enchanting natural impressions and fiery dances. "Night Prelude" is followed by a malaguena, a dance from Malaga, and the mentioned habanera, which takes its name from the capital of Cuba. Ravel's mastery in painting with the orchestra is particularly prominent in the concluding Feria, "festival". Here the melody part plays virtuoso between strings and winds while cellos, basses and bassoons run a relay race, all the while percussion with triangle, tambourine and castanets deliver their hits with powerful support from the brass. A more effective orchestral finale is hard to find.

Camille Saint-Saëns (1835–1921) Cello Concerto No. 1 Like Mozart and Mendelssohn, Camille Saint-Saëns was a precocious child prodigy. By the age of 10, he could play all of Beethoven's piano sonatas from memory. During his long life, he composed in most genres: symphonies, chamber music, opera and choral works. He is perhaps best known for Carnival of the Animals and Cello Concerto No. 1 – called "the perfect cello concerto" by Shostakovich. No frills. No long orchestral introduction. With a dramatic orchestral chord followed by the soloist's fiery entrance, the listener is thrown straight into a musical whirlwind – as if the cello had suddenly acquired a voice that could no longer be contained. Through the concerto's three movements, Saint-Saëns lets the cello show its full range: from lyrical warmth to virtuoso brilliance, from glowing temperament to heartfelt reflection. The music demands total presence from both soloist and audience. There is certainly time for rest and recovery, but absolutely no break – the three movements are composed in one long, continuous flow. The sudden attack of the opening retains its romantic shock effect until the final triumphant gathering of power. The premiere of the cello concerto took place in Paris in 1873 – since then considered by many to be one of the greatest.

Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) Suite No 2 from Daphnis et Chloé It is difficult to capture this orchestral suite in a few words, which after more than 100 years strikes an audience with enormous richness of color and virtuosity. A music that is only remarkable at the time of its creation. 1913 is the year that Stravinsky's Rite of Spring is played for the first time, and Anton Webern's 6 orchestral works are performed in Vienna. Two concerts whose musical revolution was for a long time overshadowed by the scuffles that arose during the concerts. Ravel's suite was already embraced during the composer's lifetime, but its musical revolution in harmony and orchestration is no lesser. This suite, which is part of a ballet set to the Greek tale of Daphnis and Chloé, to which Diaghilev's famous dance company danced, bears all the characteristics that made Ravel's music immortal. The examples are countless, but the level of subtle genius is present already in the opening of the work, when the sun rises in the impressionistic orchestral scree. Not least listen to how this is embodied in the string section. The timbre, which is like a fund for the moving wind motifs, is in fact the sunrise's most sonorous transformation; how the strings in a slow procession during the opening bars raise the chords, from desk to desk, from section to section, and in that way - sifted through the sound of the strings - sweetly let the overtones from the strings go from the dark to the clear. On December 8, 1917, the choir debuted in Beethoven's Choir Fantasy with Wilhelm Stenhammar as soloist at the grand piano. As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir has participated in concerts in, among other places, the Royal Albert Hall and Canterbury Cathedral in England, as well as participated with the Gothenburg Symphony in the annual music festival in the Canary Islands and on a tour to China.

Édouard Lalo came from an old Spanish family that had lived in France for several generations. His reputation grew considerably when the great Spanish violinist Pablo Sarasate premiered his Violin Concerto Op. 20 in 1874, followed the next year by Symphonie espagnole – a true stroke of fortune for the 52-year-old composer. Lalo called it a “Spanish symphony”, yet it is essentially a violin concerto in which the soloist is given every opportunity to shine, both through technical brilliance and expressive nuance, while remaining an integral part of the symphonic texture.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) Capriccio espagnol Alborada - Variazioni - Alborada - Scena e canto gitano - Fandango asturiano Considering the interest that Michail Glinka devoted to Spanish music, it is perhaps not difficult to imagine that something would also rub off on his student Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. In 1887 he wrote his great Spanish piece, Spanish capriccio in five movements for orchestra, in which he also explores Spanish rhythms and harmonies. This spanish capriccio would become one of Rimsky-Korsakov's most popular works. It was quickly followed in time by two more major orchestral works, the Russian Easter Overture and Scheherazade, which together demonstrate his orchestration and sensitivity to each instrument's personal timbre and technical possibilities. The spanish suite has its starting point in a fast and playful theme with inspiration from a dance from the region Asturias. The theme then returns in the middle movement in new combinations – and also towards the end where another Asturian dance plays the main role. With Rimsky-Korsakov, the spanish sound gets a sonorous and glittering design with lots of percussion and cymbals.

Paul Dukas (1865-1935) L'apprenti sorcier L'apprenti sorcier (The Sorcerer's Apprentice) is the most famous work by the French composer Paul Dukas. It premiered in May 1897 in Paris with the composer himself conducting. The piece is based on Goethe's poem Der Zauberlehrling, about a sorcerer who leaves his apprentice to fetch water. But instead of doing it himself, the apprentice conjures up a broom to do the job for him. Dukas illustrates the broom with a rhythmic theme in the bassoon. The water is depicted through leaps and splashing cymbals. But the apprentice is not fully trained and loses control of the situation. The broom never stops fetching water. The room floods. The apprentice tries to chop the broom in half with an axe, which only gives rise to more brooms. A contributing factor to the music's great popularity was Walt Disney's animated film Fantasia from 1940, starring Mickey Mouse. Dukas' romantic and magical works stand today as a clear precursor, along with Korngold and Holst, to John Williams' shimmering film music.

The choir was founded in 1917 by cousins Elsa and Wilhelm Stenhammar. Elsa Stenhammar was one of the driving forces in turn-of-the-century choir life in Gothenburg and became the choir's first rehearser. On December 8, 1917, the choir debuted in Beethoven's Choir Fantasy with Wilhelm Stenhammar as soloist at the grand piano. As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Symphony No. 4 in A, Op 90 "The Italian" Allegro vivace Andante con moto Con moto moderato Saltarello Presto No other composer - Mozart not excluded - has written such magnificently gifted music already as a child. Between the ages of eleven and fifteen, Felix Mendelssohn composed thirteen string symphonies, four operas, five concertos and countless chamber music works, in addition to piano and organ pieces, solo songs and choirs. And a great deal of this is still in the standard repertoire worldwide. He was the son of the wealthy banker Abraham, in whose home artists and musicians were constant guests. On Sundays, the banker used to organize concerts at his home in Berlin. Court musicians and the siblings Felix and Fanny appeared as soloists, and in the audience you could not infrequently find the philosopher Hegel or the scientist Humboldt. So it is perhaps not surprising that the talented Felix made such progress already in his boyhood. When he was fifteen years old, he began his first symphony for a full orchestra. He managed to write four more symphonies before his premature death at the age of only 38.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) Capriccio espagnol Alborada - Variazioni - Alborada - Scena e canto gitano - Fandango asturiano Considering the interest that Michail Glinka devoted to Spanish music, it is perhaps not difficult to imagine that something would also rub off on his student Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. In 1887 he wrote his great Spanish piece, Spanish capriccio in five movements for orchestra, in which he also explores Spanish rhythms and harmonies. This spanish capriccio would become one of Rimsky-Korsakov's most popular works. It was quickly followed in time by two more major orchestral works, the Russian Easter Overture and Scheherazade, which together demonstrate his orchestration and sensitivity to each instrument's personal timbre and technical possibilities. The spanish suite has its starting point in a fast and playful theme with inspiration from a dance from the region Asturias. The theme then returns in the middle movement in new combinations – and also towards the end where another Asturian dance plays the main role. With Rimsky-Korsakov, the spanish sound gets a sonorous and glittering design with lots of percussion and cymbals.

The rhapsody was a perfect tool for provincial exploration - genuine or newly composed folk songs were arranged and assembled into a kind of more elaborate suite. Not even the elegant Ravel, known for clarity and refined orchestral effects, could resist the temptation. His favourite Chabrier had already composed the successful rhapsody Espana in 1883, and he himself had been attracted by Spanish tones in Habanera (1895) for two pianos - which was orchestrated and incorporated into Rapsodie espagnole - and Alborada del gracioso (1905). So the foundation was already laid when he wrote his first major orchestral work Rapsodie espagnole in 1908. The work flows with sensual orchestral sounds, enchanting natural impressions and fiery dances. "Night Prelude" is followed by a malaguena, a dance from Malaga, and the mentioned habanera, which takes its name from the capital of Cuba. Ravel's mastery in painting with the orchestra is particularly prominent in the concluding Feria, "festival". Here the melody part plays virtuoso between strings and winds while cellos, basses and bassoons run a relay race, all the while percussion with triangle, tambourine and castanets deliver their hits with powerful support from the brass. A more effective orchestral finale is hard to find.
