Édouard Lalo came from an old Spanish family that had lived in France for several generations. His reputation grew considerably when the great Spanish violinist Pablo Sarasate premiered his Violin Concerto Op. 20 in 1874, followed the next year by Symphonie espagnole – a true stroke of fortune for the 52-year-old composer. Lalo called it a “Spanish symphony”, yet it is essentially a violin concerto in which the soloist is given every opportunity to shine, both through technical brilliance and expressive nuance, while remaining an integral part of the symphonic texture.

Few have combined jazz and classical music as skillfully as the American composer George Gershwin. The year after the triumph of the free-form Rhapsody in Blue for solo piano and orchestra in 1924, he began a classically designed piano concerto in three movements. The jazz elements are unmistakable from the opening bars with explosive drum beats, and the concerto also contains clear elements of Charleston, blues and ragtime. The piano part is virtuoso and drives the piece rhythmically forward, while the orchestra acts as both support and counterpoint. George Gershwin himself was the soloist at the premiere in 1925, and the work has since become one of the most played and appreciated piano concertos in the American repertoire. The piano concerto has also left its mark on both popular culture and sports. In the 1951 musical film An American in Paris, a pianist dreams of playing all the instruments in the work at a gala, and South Korean figure skater Yuna Kim won an Olympic gold medal to the music in 2010.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) Capriccio espagnol Alborada - Variazioni - Alborada - Scena e canto gitano - Fandango asturiano Considering the interest that Michail Glinka devoted to Spanish music, it is perhaps not difficult to imagine that something would also rub off on his student Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. In 1887 he wrote his great Spanish piece, Spanish capriccio in five movements for orchestra, in which he also explores Spanish rhythms and harmonies. This spanish capriccio would become one of Rimsky-Korsakov's most popular works. It was quickly followed in time by two more major orchestral works, the Russian Easter Overture and Scheherazade, which together demonstrate his orchestration and sensitivity to each instrument's personal timbre and technical possibilities. The spanish suite has its starting point in a fast and playful theme with inspiration from a dance from the region Asturias. The theme then returns in the middle movement in new combinations – and also towards the end where another Asturian dance plays the main role. With Rimsky-Korsakov, the spanish sound gets a sonorous and glittering design with lots of percussion and cymbals.

Allegro con brio Largo Rondo: Allegro The first sketches for the Third Piano Concerto can be dated to 1797, when Beethoven was greatly inspired by listening to a performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 in the same key. The handwritten manuscript is dated 1800, but he continued to refine the design until early 1803. The first performance of the Third Piano Concerto took place on 5 April 1803 at the Theater an der Wien. A newspaper article states that Beethoven did not receive a particularly long applause, even though he had gathered all his most devoted admirers for the evening. The reason is that he was already beginning to be regarded as a strange scoundrel. Beethoven's pupil Ferdinand Ries reported that Beethoven played the solo part in the Piano Concerto in good spirits, but that many notes "fell under the table". When it came to the composition itself, however, Ries believed that no composer he knew even came close to the master - and we are still willing to agree today. Despite its serious key, Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto is not a grand and tragic drama, unlike his other works in C minor (for example, Symphony No. 5, the Symphony of Fate). On the contrary, this concerto has a classically clear structure. The largo in particular is transparently simple and butterfly-like. The outward-looking final rondo, on the other hand, is more concerned with sharp shifts between both emotions and keys.

Haydn Variations Op 56 Like Beethoven, Brahms was very interested in the variation form and stands out as one of the foremost composers in this area. The theme for the Haydn variations is a chorale called St Antoni, followed by eight variations and a grand finale. A good friend of Brahms, Karl Ferdinand Pohl, had brought some unknown music to Brahms in 1870, including some scores or divertimenti for wind orchestra. One partita contained the Antonius Chorale, which Brahms fell in love with and noted in his sketchbook. At first it was believed to have been composed by Haydn, but researchers increasingly believe that it was possibly one of Haydn's students, probably Ignatz Pleyel, who composed the partita. The theme is based on a hymn that pilgrims used to sing on St. Anthony's Day. The Brahms work is available in two versions, one for two pianos and one for orchestra. Brahms entered the orchestral version in his catalog first, but it was the piano version that first appeared in print. The duo version was first performed by Brahms himself and Clara Schumann. The orchestral version was first performed in November 1873 by the Vienna Philharmonic under Brahms.

Dawn Sunday Morning Mooonlight Storm Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes, which premiered in 1945, is one of the most central works in British opera of the 20th century. It tells the story of a fisherman who causes the death of his apprentices, is harassed by the small town population and loses his mind. Between the acts, Britten inserted four orchestral interludes that can be performed as a standalone orchestral suite, the Four Sea Interludes. They are titled Dawn, Sunday Morning, Moonlight and Storm. The four interludes depict not only the nature outside the small coastal village where the opera is set, but also the psychological content of the opera and the title character's struggle against society and his inner demons. In Britten's music, the sea is both concrete and symbolic, a force of nature and a mirror for human loneliness, alienation and conflict – something that resonated deeply with him as a homosexual in a time of condemnation. With his sensitive tone language, Britten creates an atmospheric soundscape, and its rich, expansive music is reminiscent of Debussy's La Mer and Mahler's emotional moods. The interludes move between impressionistic colors and sharp drama, and show Britten's mastery in transforming the colors of the sea into expressive music of both beauty and anxiety. Dawn Sunday Morning Mooonlight Storm Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes, which premiered in 1945, is one of the most central works in British opera of the 20th century. It tells the story of a fisherman who causes the death of his apprentices, is harassed by the small town population and loses his mind. Between the acts, Britten inserted four orchestral interludes that can be performed as a standalone orchestral suite, the Four Sea Interludes. They are titled Dawn, Sunday Morning, Moonlight and Storm. The four interludes depict not only the nature outside the small coastal village where the opera is set, but also the psychological content of the opera and the title character's struggle against society and his inner demons. In Britten's music, the sea is both concrete and symbolic, a force of nature and a mirror for human loneliness, alienation and conflict – something that resonated deeply with him as a homosexual in a time of condemnation. With his sensitive tone language, Britten creates an atmospheric soundscape, and its rich, expansive music is reminiscent of Debussy's La Mer and Mahler's emotional moods. The interludes move between impressionistic colors and sharp drama, and show Britten's mastery in transforming the colors of the sea into expressive music of both beauty and anxiety. Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) Excelsior! Many have said that Stenhammar's Excelsior! is strongly influenced by Wagner, but there is undeniably much here that would prove to be genuine Stenhammar. The title can be interpreted as "rushing and striving", and the lecture description of the main theme is "passionately agitated". The score is dated Berlin 4 September 1896. It is known that Stenhammar saw a performance of Goethe's Faust in the German capital at this time and that he had purchased Goethe's collected works. The books have been preserved and it can be seen that the volume with Faust was read extensively. Although he clearly had Faust as a literary model, the drama has only helped to create the atmosphere. If any part of Faust has been the direct inspiration, it is the conversation between Faust and his valet Wagner immediately after the parts Prologue in Heaven and Night. The overture was dedicated to the Berlin Philharmonic, which may seem presumptuous for a 25-year-old composer who had written his very first orchestral work. When Stenhammar himself brought the work to his debut concert as conductor with the Royal Court Orchestra in Stockholm on 16 October 1897, it was a great success.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) Capriccio espagnol Alborada - Variazioni - Alborada - Scena e canto gitano - Fandango asturiano Considering the interest that Michail Glinka devoted to Spanish music, it is perhaps not difficult to imagine that something would also rub off on his student Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. In 1887 he wrote his great Spanish piece, Spanish capriccio in five movements for orchestra, in which he also explores Spanish rhythms and harmonies. This spanish capriccio would become one of Rimsky-Korsakov's most popular works. It was quickly followed in time by two more major orchestral works, the Russian Easter Overture and Scheherazade, which together demonstrate his orchestration and sensitivity to each instrument's personal timbre and technical possibilities. The spanish suite has its starting point in a fast and playful theme with inspiration from a dance from the region Asturias. The theme then returns in the middle movement in new combinations – and also towards the end where another Asturian dance plays the main role. With Rimsky-Korsakov, the spanish sound gets a sonorous and glittering design with lots of percussion and cymbals.

"Only once have I succeeded in fully realizing my intentions, in Boléro." Maurice Ravel composed Boléro (1928) as a bold experiment in rhythm, timbre, and endurance. Originally written as ballet music for the Russian ballerina Ida Rubinstein, the work is based on an almost ascetic musical material - an unchanging rhythm of the snare drum together with two simple melodies repeated without thematic development. What changes instead is the color, density, and dynamics of the orchestra. Over a sustained ostinatory rhythm, the melody wanders through the orchestra's instruments, one by one, in a slow and relentless rise toward a monumental climax. Ravel himself emphasized the monotonous and almost mechanical character of the work, describing it as a pure study in orchestration rather than an expression of drama or narrative. It is precisely this consistent limitation that gives the music its hypnotic, almost trance-like effect. Boléro immediately attracted great attention upon its premiere in Paris, and achieved worldwide success within months. It became Ravel's most famous work, remains one of the most frequently performed classical pieces in the world, and is considered one of the most iconic and powerful orchestral experiences of the 20th century.

The choir was founded in 1917 by cousins Elsa and Wilhelm Stenhammar. Elsa Stenhammar was one of the driving forces in turn-of-the-century choir life in Gothenburg and became the choir's first rehearser. On December 8, 1917, the choir debuted in Beethoven's Choir Fantasy with Wilhelm Stenhammar as soloist at the grand piano. As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir has participated in concerts in, among other places, the Royal Albert Hall and Canterbury Cathedral in England, as well as participated with the Gothenburg Symphony in the annual music festival in the Canary Islands and on a tour to China.
