Beethoven composed over 700 works during his 45-year career. One of the most beloved is his only violin concerto—a work with an unusually dramatic backstory. Legend has it that the concerto was not completed until just before its premiere in Vienna on December 23, 1806. Consequently, the soloist Franz Clement—to whom the work is dedicated—reportedly had to play parts of the music directly from the manuscript. At the premiere, he even inserted an improvised cadenza of his own, which he is said to have played with his violin held upside down.
For its time, the concerto was bold in several respects: it was unusually long, featured a larger orchestra than previous concertos, and included a virtuosic, demanding solo part. It is perhaps not surprising that it took fifty years for the work to become a staple of the concert repertoire.
Musically, Beethoven blends the Classical style with something new and Romantic. The lengthy orchestral introduction presents and develops the musical material before the violin enters. Soloist and orchestra then interact and evolve together throughout the concerto; they share themes, respond to one another, and take turns leading and following.
The violin concerto is cherished by many because it is not merely a display of virtuosity, but a living musical dialogue.
Ludwig van Beethoven's First Symphony, written in 1799-1800, is not a tentative attempt by some inexperienced and immature composer. No, Beethoven had long been known as one of the foremost pianists and improvisers of his time, and his compositions had already received considerable attention. He had managed to write two piano concertos, eleven piano sonatas and six string quartets - to name a few. But on the other hand, he was not as bold as he might have been in some of his chamber music works.
The critics nevertheless thought that the symphony was generally good and that it offered many novelties and "a whole world of ideas". "But too many wind instruments were used, so it sounded more like a brass band than an orchestra". 200 years later, we find the symphony both clear and concise, conventional and strongly related to the symphonies of Mozart and Haydn. But we also notice that there is something more here - a strong personal touch. The driving spirit is not borrowed, it is Beethoven's own signature.

Antonín Dvorák (1841-1904)
Symphony No. 8 Op 88
A few years before Antonín Dvorák left for America, the Eighth Symphony grew during long walks in the woods and fields. The Eighth Symphony is the result of a conscious search for peace and harmony. When the storm sometimes roars for the sake of contrast, it only blows away the dry leaves and brings fresh air with it. It is a happily smiling music, a simple, folk fiddler's music that deviates from the strict symphonic traditions.
The first movement begins with a sonorous cello theme that then returns twice during the movement; in the introduction to the development and in the recapitulation. The movement closely follows the sonata form despite the great changes in emotion. The slow movement is an adagio in C minor that is built up from a string of beautiful episodes. Then follows a graceful and elastic waltz before the finale once again presents a short introduction consisting of a trumpet solo. This solo also recurs a few times, including as a pianissimo accompaniment to solo flute and played by trumpets and horns. An outward-looking coda concludes the symphony.
On 2 February 1890, this G major symphony was premiered with the composer himself conducting the National Theatre Orchestra in Prague, and he also conducted performances in London and Frankfurt shortly afterwards. The symphony would soon triumph around the world, and alongside the Ninth Symphony (From the New World), written in America, it became the most beloved of his symphonies. The symphony was dedicated to the "Bohemian Franz Joseph Academy for the Promotion of Art and Literature", in thanks for Dvorák becoming its honorary member.

Paul Dukas (1865-1935)
L'apprenti sorcier
L'apprenti sorcier (The Sorcerer's Apprentice) is the most famous work by the French composer Paul Dukas. It premiered in May 1897 in Paris with the composer himself conducting. The piece is based on Goethe's poem Der Zauberlehrling, about a sorcerer who leaves his apprentice to fetch water. But instead of doing it himself, the apprentice conjures up a broom to do the job for him.
Dukas illustrates the broom with a rhythmic theme in the bassoon. The water is depicted through leaps and splashing cymbals. But the apprentice is not fully trained and loses control of the situation. The broom never stops fetching water. The room floods. The apprentice tries to chop the broom in half with an axe, which only gives rise to more brooms.
A contributing factor to the music's great popularity was Walt Disney's animated film Fantasia from 1940, starring Mickey Mouse. Dukas' romantic and magical works stand today as a clear precursor, along with Korngold and Holst, to John Williams' shimmering film music.

Denmark's national composer began work on his third symphony in 1910. He was in an explosive creative phase, possibly triggered by a marriage in crisis, with underlying frustration and guilt. The symphony is one of his most life-affirming works.
Around the same time, Nielsen developed close ties to Gothenburg. Here he conducted several times and found an artistic soulmate in the Symphony Orchestra's chief conductor Wilhelm Stenhammar. The two shared both aesthetics and ideals: music that speaks directly, organically and freely – unbound by the heavy veils of romanticism.
Sinfonia Espansiva begins forcefully with several unison orchestral thrusts, as if Nielsen wants to open the gates to a new room, where pent-up energy can swirl freely. The music with a driving motoric quality, especially in the strings – constantly in motion, constantly on the move – is reflected in the concluding fourth movement, but is then less heroic and more dance-like and playful. Drive and melody that constantly expands, that is what Nielsen might think of as the meaning of his invented word espansiva. The slow second movement is the heart of the work – a lyrical idyll where two voices, soprano and baritone, emerge in wordless dialogue. What do the voices want to convey to each other? Probably love and happiness.

Andante sostenuto
Andantino in modo di canzona
Allegro
Allegro con fuoco
In correspondence as well as a for Tchaikovsky unusual online commentary, both implicit and explicit connections between this fourth symphony and Beethoven's fifth, Symphony of Fate, are suggested. In Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony, it sometimes seems as if he is trying to bring everything together, both the absolute of the music and the programmatic, and this is already audible in the first movement's architectural use of the fanfare theme that surrounds the otherwise inserted classical sonata form. The structural thereby gets a certain programmatic design, but within the form, the motivic work is found and listen (!) here to how Tchaikovsky uses the orchestra as a design of the room. The sonorous qualities of the shift of instrumentation provide a for the time unusual, and for posterity remarkable, use of instrumentation as a form of variation, one in which the ear and the room, not the word, are supreme.
And it is here – in the alternation between rhythmic and instrumental variation – that the rhapsodic becomes increasingly apparent: the story the symphony portrays, regardless of whether it is with just the musical aspect or with an idea of ??an underlying narrative, takes on an increasingly clear sonorous garment in Tchaikovsky.
The second movement's simpler, more melancholic feeling, and the third movement's dance-like display of pizzicato shock may seem parenthetical after the weight of the first movement, but in miniature the connection between motivic processing and the exploration of space through orchestration is found here as well. Finally, in the fourth, bombastic, movement, everything ties together. The rhapsodic, in the folk-inspired melodies are modulated and thrown around in the orchestral clusters, and finally we are back in the fate theme, and the coda can triumphantly bring us home.

Le poème de l’extase (1908) is a symphonic manifesto. His increasingly esoteric, aesthetic and philosophical thinking stands with one foot in the late Romantic tradition and with the other in a radically individualized world of sound. Harmony, form and metaphysics merge. Scriabin starts from an expanded tonality, where the “mystical chords” – built up of quarter and tritone relationships – function as a vibrating center of gravity.
This ecstatic symphonic poem can be understood as written in free sonata form, but without clear boundaries between exposition, development and reprise. Thematically – and in this we hear one of the more peculiar features of the work – there is a continuous transformation of the sound and chords of the music, rather than through contrasts. The orchestration is refined: high woodwinds, shimmering strings and a pregnant brass section give a sound that constantly strives upwards, towards an ecstatic climax. The work culminates in a finale, where tonal resolution and dynamic maximalism coincide, but not as conflict, but as confirmation.

Lars-Erik Larsson (1908-1986)
Pastoral Suite
Overture - Romance - Scherzo
Lars-Erik Larsson made his debut in Stockholm at the age of 20 and became one of Sweden's most popular composers. The Pastoral Suite was composed in the autumn of 1938 for the programme "Moments of the Day" on Swedish Radio, where Larsson was conductor. He originally wrote six movements, three of which have been retained in the suite. The overture has a slow introduction and a subsequent longer allegro in the composer's typical easygoing, rhythmically varied style. Then the romance, the most frequently performed movement, which is singable with great melodic beauty. Finally, a lively and graceful scherzo. The suite is scored for double woodwinds, two horns, two trumpets, timpani and strings, while the middle movement is for strings only.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
Symphony No. 4 in A, Op 90 "The Italian"
Allegro vivace
Andante con moto
Con moto moderato
Saltarello Presto
No other composer - Mozart not excluded - has written such magnificently gifted music already as a child. Between the ages of eleven and fifteen, Felix Mendelssohn composed thirteen string symphonies, four operas, five concertos and countless chamber music works, in addition to piano and organ pieces, solo songs and choirs. And a great deal of this is still in the standard repertoire worldwide. He was the son of the wealthy banker Abraham, in whose home artists and musicians were constant guests. On Sundays, the banker used to organize concerts at his home in Berlin. Court musicians and the siblings Felix and Fanny appeared as soloists, and in the audience you could not infrequently find the philosopher Hegel or the scientist Humboldt. So it is perhaps not surprising that the talented Felix made such progress already in his boyhood.
When he was fifteen years old, he began his first symphony for a full orchestra. He managed to write four more symphonies before his premature death at the age of only 38.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Symphony No. 4 Op 60
The Fourth Symphony is, as often said, situated between two symphonic giants. A reputation that has often led to its being overlooked, but in fact it follows a working method that is more the rule than the exception in Beethoven. The revolutionary works are often followed by music that seems to take care of what follows the storm. And this year, 1806 – we are in perhaps the most insanely productive of Beethoven’s life – is no exception.
The symphony begins with a tender entry followed by a plateau of unison Bb in strings and winds that is shadowily surrounded by slow melodic movements. The music grows suggestively from a melancholy to a euphoria – from minor to major – when the allegro breaks through in all its splendor.
After the first movement's alternating shift between intense outbursts and calm breaths, one of Beethoven's most lyrical adagios follows, where the repetitive rhythm (you hear it immediately in the verse) makes the movement dance forward stubbornly.
In the third and fourth movements, a scherzo and an allegro, the music rushes forward. For those who have already noticed how the form of the adagio rhythm is a variation of the first movement's syncopated outbursts, here, in the more dance-like parts of the symphony, you can notice how Beethoven turns the building blocks of the music inside and outside, but at the same time joins them together. In this way, he lets us anticipate the revolution that the symphony's form is facing. Fate will soon be knocking on the door.
At the very first performance of the German composer Max Bruch’s final version in 1868, the audience embraced the work at once. Bruch’s thoughtful approach to instrumentation allows both soloist and orchestra to shine – their interplay flows with melodic richness and expressive warmth.
Like Felix Mendelssohn, Max Bruch was a musical prodigy. He wrote his first symphony and a string quartet at the age of fourteen. Yet it must have been a strange fate for a composer whose works were widely performed and admired to be celebrated, for the rest of his long life, almost exclusively for a single piece: the Violin Concerto in G minor. The world’s great violinists adored it, the public adored it, but Bruch eventually grew weary of players who wanted to perform only that concerto. Unfortunately, he had sold the rights to his publisher early on, meaning he received no income from the immense number of performances during his lifetime.
Bruch described the first movement as a prelude – a long one – which leads almost imperceptibly into the second movement. Like Mendelssohn, he lets the soloist enter swiftly rather than opening with the full orchestra. Here, inspired melodies unfold in dialogue with the orchestra, interrupted by two brief solo cadenzas. The violin begins the adagio with a nostalgic, heartfelt line, later followed by brilliant solo writing that avoids any hint of undue sentimentality. A short pause leads into an energetic allegro, where a Hungarian-inspired dance takes command, complete with virtuosic solo passages and a romantic theme that captivates and seduces.

Symphony No. 4 E minor Op 98
Allegro non troppo
Andante moderato
Allegro giocoso
Allegro energico e passionato (Tema con variazioni)
Brahms himself conducted the first performance of the work. This took place in Meiningen on October 25, 1885, but was not an immediate success, even though Brahms once again composed melodically accurate and thoughtfully orchestrated music.
What made it all a bit dubious was that the music was not particularly easy to buy at all. The audience found too much melancholy and there was talk of autumn music. The simile is actually not so crazy at all, if you also consider that autumn is not only dark, but also has strong colors. It has been said that at this time Brahms was studying the ancient Greek tragedian Sophocles' drama Oedipus in detail, and possibly some of the moods from there have crept into the music.
Today, Brahms's Fourth Symphony has a high status. It is regarded as the crown of a very symphonic creation, and as the testament of a master. It is a deep, gentle and slightly resigned music with rare well-balanced form and character. And the finale has been especially admired with its eight-bar passacaglia theme presented by the brass in rigorously executed and artful variations.
