Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Overture to Le nozze di Figaro
The task of an overture is to create anticipation and excitement and to give a foreshadowing of the dramatic events of the opera. Mozart signals joy and comedy with the high tempo, but the dark tones also let us suspect that this is an opera with serious elements. The frame plot is one of the most common in Mozart's time: the struggle between the lord - the count - and the servant, where the latter ultimately draws the longest straw. When the overture's humming flight of bumblebees has come to an end, the curtain rises, and we meet the servant Figaro and his fiancée Susanna in the process of finding the best place for their new bed - they are getting married.

Orkesterkommentar:

Beethoven really had to struggle with his music. He worked meticulously on every detail, and the work is still extant in his sketchbooks. Even the seemingly obvious opening of the Fifth Symphony, the knocking on the door of fate that immediately seizes the listener and which seems to be such an unshakable thought, undergoes a series of transformations in the sketches that are difficult to understand in retrospect.
The energetic scherzo transition in the finale has undergone countless phases of development. The sketches also show that Beethoven originally did not at all envision a finale in a triumphant major, but in a minor key. Beethoven's Fifth is certainly worthy of all the admiring attention it receives. It is the result of the tribulations of a hard-working genius.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Symphony No. 4 Op 60
The Fourth Symphony is, as often said, situated between two symphonic giants. A reputation that has often led to its being overlooked, but in fact it follows a working method that is more the rule than the exception in Beethoven. The revolutionary works are often followed by music that seems to take care of what follows the storm. And this year, 1806 – we are in perhaps the most insanely productive of Beethoven’s life – is no exception.
The symphony begins with a tender entry followed by a plateau of unison Bb in strings and winds that is shadowily surrounded by slow melodic movements. The music grows suggestively from a melancholy to a euphoria – from minor to major – when the allegro breaks through in all its splendor.
After the first movement's alternating shift between intense outbursts and calm breaths, one of Beethoven's most lyrical adagios follows, where the repetitive rhythm (you hear it immediately in the verse) makes the movement dance forward stubbornly.
In the third and fourth movements, a scherzo and an allegro, the music rushes forward. For those who have already noticed how the form of the adagio rhythm is a variation of the first movement's syncopated outbursts, here, in the more dance-like parts of the symphony, you can notice how Beethoven turns the building blocks of the music inside and outside, but at the same time joins them together. In this way, he lets us anticipate the revolution that the symphony's form is facing. Fate will soon be knocking on the door.

A requiem is typically a musical setting of the traditional Latin text of the Catholic Mass for the Dead. Johannes Brahms, however, broke with these conventions, drawing inspiration from various sources. He had contemplated the work for some time before beginning to write his Mass for the Dead in 1860; the first two movements were completed the following year. The funeral march in the main section of the second movement—which bears a resemblance to a sarabande—originated in a lost sonata in D minor for two pianos that he had been working on as early as 1854. Brahms might well have been content with just these two movements, but when his mother died on February 2, 1865, at the age of 76, he felt compelled to add more music. Consequently, during the spring and summer of 1865, he completed no fewer than four additional movements—those designated as numbers 3, 4, 6, and 7 in the finished work.
The first two movements premiered in Vienna on December 1, 1867, but the predominantly Catholic audience failed to grasp the work. On Good Friday (April 10), 1868, all the movements composed up to that point were performed at Bremen Cathedral to such acclaim that the performance was repeated a few weeks later. Both Brahms’s father and Robert Schumann’s widow, Clara, were in attendance. Brahms conducted the performance in Bremen himself, yet he remained highly critical of the work; a month later, he added the slow soprano aria that now constitutes the fifth movement. Thus, his most extensive composition was finally completed, and its extremely self-critical creator was reasonably satisfied.
In February 1869, the complete work was premiered in Leipzig by Carl Reinecke, in the form we know today. Before the year was out, it had already been performed in some twenty cities across Germany and Switzerland. It was the first time Brahms had written a major work for soloists, choir, and orchestra. This piece paved the way for a long series of similar works. The fact that Brahms did not use the standard Latin text for the Requiem—or even a translation of it—stems from his background as a Protestant and the fact that he was not particularly religious. The work is based on biblical texts from both the Old and New Testaments—using Luther’s German translation—as well as the Apocrypha; the composer selected these passages with great care, thereby infusing the work with a personal process of mourning that possesses universal human significance. It became a monumental work, yet at the same time one that was deeply personal and heartfelt.

Richard Wagner’s last traditionally Romantic opera centers on the knight Lohengrin. The popular prelude to the first act—which the author Thomas Mann considered the “pinnacle of Romanticism”—is frequently performed as a standalone concert piece. Through various musical themes and motifs, we are drawn into the first act’s world of passion, mystery, and heroism. In Lohengrin’s Grail narrative, the myth of the holy vessel is said to symbolize human longing.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Akademische Festouvertüre Op 80
At age 60, Brahms was widely considered the greatest living composer. He became an honorary citizen of the city of his birth, Hamburg, and was honored with a commemorative medal from the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. He was called to Cambridge to receive an honorary doctorate from the university, but Brahms was not keen on for these kinds of honors, so he declined. It was easier for him to accept a similar offer from the somewhat more anonymous Breslau, and as a thank you he wrote the Academic Festival Overture, based on famous German student songs. It all starts in mournful C minor and then follows the songs "Wir hatten gebaut ein stattliches Haus", "Landesvaters", "Fuchslieder" and finally (the well-known among students) "Gaudeamus igitur". Brahms has hardly been known as a jubilant composer, and nowhere in his output is one to find more exuberant C major tuning than in this overture's glittering final bars.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
Violin Concerto E minor
Allegro molto appassionato
Andante
Allegretto non troppo. Allegro molto vivace
Felix Mendelssohn came from a German-Jewish family and as a composer strove to reconcile issues of spirituality and religious tolerance within society, and within himself. The Violin Concerto in E minor was written for the soloist Ferdinand David. However, the wait was six years before the premiere could take place in Leipzig on March 13, 1845 with David and the Gewandhaus Orchestra. New was the transition to the second movement without a break, as well as the fact that the soloist took up the opening theme, not the orchestra, and that a solo cadenza came already in the introduction - something that Sibelius and Tchaikovsky would also follow. The success was immediate. But in Nazi Germany, Mendelssohn's greatness was denied and his name was erased from public life.

Allegro
Larghetto
Allegretto
At the beginning of 1786, Mozart worked most intensively on the opera buffa The Marriage of Figaro. But as always, the work was interrupted now and then by other commissions and by other works that were begging to be written down. Mozart himself probably premiered his 24th piano concerto on April 7 at the Burgtheater in Vienna. After this very personal and open-hearted music, he was able to return to the comedy in Figaro and complete the opera without further interruptions.
The main theme in the first movement is presented in unison in the orchestra and is allowed to play the role of a kind of chorus throughout the movement. When the piano enters, it takes up another theme, which nevertheless shows a certain kinship. Mozart had only used this method once before, and that was in the Piano Concerto in D minor, No. 20. He did not write any more concertos in minor! This first movement is more symphonic than concertante, and the orchestra is the largest that Mozart prescribed in both concerto and symphony contexts. To this challenge, the easy larghetto stands out as a bright contrast, even if the attentive listener notices the tears behind the smile.

The young Norwegian composer arrived in Leipzig in 1863 and was thrown straight into one of Europe's most vital musical environments. At the conservatory, where Edvard Grieg and later Amanda Maier also studied, it was especially in the composition classes that Svendsen's talent shone brightest, this at a time when Leipzig still represented the classical tradition after Mendelssohn and Schumann. Leipzig also gave Svendsen a Nordic self-confidence. In the German environment, his melodies, colored by Norwegian folk tones, became something exotic and sought after.
Symphony No. 2 in B flat major (1876) is one of the most vital and brilliantly orchestrated works of Nordic Romanticism. The symphony was written in Oslo, or Kristiania as the city was then called, during a period when Svendsen was also an active conductor and teacher. The style is reminiscent of that developed by Schumann. The melodic ideas are woven tightly together and the movements are tied together by recurring motifs into a poetic whole. The melodies also bear traces of Schumann's dreamy and melancholic phrases, as in the singing strings of the second movement – but with soft Scandinavian lyricism.
