Ludwig van Beethoven's First Symphony, written in 1799-1800, is not a tentative attempt by some inexperienced and immature composer. No, Beethoven had long been known as one of the foremost pianists and improvisers of his time, and his compositions had already received considerable attention. He had managed to write two piano concertos, eleven piano sonatas and six string quartets - to name a few. But on the other hand, he was not as bold as he might have been in some of his chamber music works.
The critics nevertheless thought that the symphony was generally good and that it offered many novelties and "a whole world of ideas". "But too many wind instruments were used, so it sounded more like a brass band than an orchestra". 200 years later, we find the symphony both clear and concise, conventional and strongly related to the symphonies of Mozart and Haydn. But we also notice that there is something more here - a strong personal touch. The driving spirit is not borrowed, it is Beethoven's own signature.

Beethoven really had to struggle with his music. He worked meticulously on every detail, and the work is still extant in his sketchbooks. Even the seemingly obvious opening of the Fifth Symphony, the knocking on the door of fate that immediately seizes the listener and which seems to be such an unshakable thought, undergoes a series of transformations in the sketches that are difficult to understand in retrospect.
The energetic scherzo transition in the finale has undergone countless phases of development. The sketches also show that Beethoven originally did not at all envision a finale in a triumphant major, but in a minor key. Beethoven's Fifth is certainly worthy of all the admiring attention it receives. It is the result of the tribulations of a hard-working genius.

Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche is one of the great masterpieces of the orchestral repertoire. Until this point the composer had been known as a scholarly and rather serious young master, but after the premiere of Till in Cologne on 5 November 1895, it became clear that he also possessed a sparkling sense of humour.
Formally the work resembles a rondo, inviting us to follow the various escapades of the title character. Till Eulenspiegel, a famous trickster who had appeared in literature since the Middle Ages, is introduced in unmistakably fairy-tale fashion: the violins begin the piece with a dreamy phrase that seems to sing, “Once upon a time...”.
We then encounter Till as an itinerant preacher, see him fall in love, watch as he is brought to trial and sentenced to death, and finally witness his hanging. No name was inscribed on his gravestone, but an image of an owl and a mirror got to illustrate an old proverb: “Man sees his own faults as little as an owl recognizes his ugliness in looking into a mirror.” Hence the name Eulenspiegel (The Owl’s Mirror).

Peter Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)
Symphony No. 6 Pathetique Op 74
Adagio;Allegro non troppo - Allegro con grazia - Allegro molto vivace - Finale:Adagio lamentoso
Few symphonies contain as many outbursts of emotion and sudden mood swings as Tchaikovsky's Sixth, with the telling title Pathétique ("passionate suffering"). It reflects his manic-depressive personality, he suffered throughout his life from crises and often struggled with illness and depression. Tchaikovsky's death in Saint Petersburg, just nine days after he conducted the premiere, also gave the work a tragic aura right from the start. It was even said that the music deliberately foreshadowed his own death, which occurred after he drank cholera-tainted water. Even today, musicologists disagree whether it was an accident or a forced suicide, to avoid public scandal as a homosexual.
Is the sixth symphony really a self-composed requiem? This theory is fueled by the "dark" key of B minor, which stands for great passion and tragedy, and by the unusual structure. The main motif that runs throughout the work consists of a plaintive, descending second interval. The gloomy character of the symphony is clear already in the first movement, with its slow, dark introduction. The second movement is reminiscent of Don José's flower aria from Bizet's opera Carmen, which Tchaikovsky greatly admired. Towards the end of the movement there is a chorale-like funeral march, and even a quote from the Russian Orthodox funeral liturgy. The second movement provides some lightening, and Tchaikovsky wrote it in an elegant 5/4 time signature, which is a fairly common time signature in Russian folk music. The "limping" character makes the movement almost humorous, despite the loving waltz or minuet-like style.
In the third movement he returns to the march as idea, but it begins as an cheerful scherzo that gradually unfolds in its full life-affirming power. The fourth movement is the most famous in the symphony, and is partly reminiscent of a mournful requiem. The main theme is characterized by sighing motifs, and at the end the music fades into a low string chord in B minor.
Tchaikovsky considered the symphony to be his most important, most personal composition, but the premiere was received cautiously.

Richard Wagner (1813-1883)
Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde
The musical language of the opera Tristan und Isolde (1859) is sometimes considered the beginning of musical modernism. Tristan’s harmonic language, filled with linguering and unresolved dissonances, not only realizes the sexual tension between the opera’s two central characters, but also heralds the liberation from the limitations of tonality. The famous “Tristan chord” is an unresolved dissonance, an academic way of saying that it “leads to something”.
The prelude exemplifies Wagner’s forward-looking view of both harmony and the question of musical form. Here Wagner’s Leitmotif technique, i.e. central themes that correspond to characters and ideas, is also developed. Something that became completely self-evident in film music many decades later.
Isolde has just arrived and finds Tristan dead as the famous piece Liebestod (Love's Death) begins. She wants to sink into unconsciousness and finally consummate her love for Tristan by following him into death. The passage builds to a climax when "waves of refreshing winds" begin to envelop Isolde, and again when she imagines dying in "the mighty wave of the world's breath." She sinks everything as the wind floats and dissolves the chord from the prelude.

Johannes Brahms composed his Double Concerto for violin, cello and orchestra in the summer of 1887. It was his last work for orchestra and, despite being only 30 minutes long, is a truly magnificent work. Brahms himself called the work “entertaining” and a “joke” – words that a listener finds difficult to reconcile with such an intense and powerful concert.
The usual understanding of Brahms’ Double Concerto is that its serious appearance goes back to the conflict that arose between Brahms and his friend, the violinist Joseph Joachim, regarding an affair between Joachim’s wife and Brahms’ publisher. The concerto – which was premiered by Joachim and the cellist Robert Hausmann with Brahms conducting – is said to have been an outstretched hand after several years of silence. An emotional melody in the cello turns gently towards the violinist, and in the end the two are united.
The double concerto received mixed reviews. Some, such as Clara Schumann, considered it lacking in warmth. Today it stands as one of the last great concertos of the 19th century, dating back to Mozart and Beethoven – and a unique example of Brahms' late style of composition for full orchestra, in which he also uses the full range of the solo instruments.

The choir was founded in 1917 by cousins Elsa and Wilhelm Stenhammar. Elsa Stenhammar was one of the driving forces in turn-of-the-century choir life in Gothenburg and became the choir's first rehearser. On December 8, 1917, the choir debuted in Beethoven's Choir Fantasy with Wilhelm Stenhammar as soloist at the grand piano. As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program.
The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir has participated in concerts in, among other places, the Royal Albert Hall and Canterbury Cathedral in England, as well as participated with the Gothenburg Symphony in the annual music festival in the Canary Islands and on a tour to China.
Not all composers write their most famous works when they are 19 years old. One who did was George Enescu with his two Romanian Rhapsodies from 1901. They accompanied him throughout his life. In his later years, he is said to have lamented how they overshadowed his other music.
Enescu came from Romania and was a bit of a master at everything he did. It has been said of his memory that he could recreate all of Beethoven's works if they were lost. He picked up the term rhapsody from Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies. It is a title that signals spontaneity, improvisation and movement. But also that different parts have been joined together.
In the rhapsodies, Enescu portrayed a romantic image of his homeland. The first begins with the folk song “Am un leu” which is said to have been the first Enescu learned at the age of 4. After the calm introduction, the piece bursts into lively dances. The piece depicts peasants stamping and hooting at an increasingly fast pace. It is an exotic dream image of a world that may have been – but is no longer.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908)
Capriccio espagnol
Alborada - Variazioni - Alborada - Scena e canto gitano - Fandango asturiano
Considering the interest that Michail Glinka devoted to Spanish music, it is perhaps not difficult to imagine that something would also rub off on his student Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. In 1887 he wrote his great Spanish piece, Spanish capriccio in five movements for orchestra, in which he also explores Spanish rhythms and harmonies.
This spanish capriccio would become one of Rimsky-Korsakov's most popular works. It was quickly followed in time by two more major orchestral works, the Russian Easter Overture and Scheherazade, which together demonstrate his orchestration and sensitivity to each instrument's personal timbre and technical possibilities.
The spanish suite has its starting point in a fast and playful theme with inspiration from a dance from the region Asturias. The theme then returns in the middle movement in new combinations – and also towards the end where another Asturian dance plays the main role. With Rimsky-Korsakov, the spanish sound gets a sonorous and glittering design with lots of percussion and cymbals.

Carl Orff (1895-1982)
Carmina Burana
Fortuna imperatrix mundi - Primo vere - In taberna´- Cour d'amours - Blanziflor et Helena - Fortuna imperatrix mundi
During the 1930s, Carl Orff was one of the most noted composers in Germany. Much of his fame came with Carmina burana which was composed in 1935-1936. Its subtitle reads "secular songs for soli and choir accompanied by orchestra and with magical images" - a scenography of a medieval kind where evocative paintings and decorations in concert with the large choir create an overwhelming impression. Carmina burana was first performed in Frankfurt am Main in 1937, given at La Scala in 1942 and shortly afterwards also in Vienna, but despite this Orff only became more widely known as a composer after the war.
The music was not like anything else, it felt original and stood outside contemporary trends and schools. His musical inspiration can be said to have its roots in the dramatic imagery, with Greek tragedy and Italian baroque opera as two major sources of inspiration. Musically, there is a closer influence: Stravinsky's dramatic cantata Oedipus Rex and above all Les noces - rhythmically marked music of a deliberately simple style with a sparse orchestral movement (lots of percussion) and the choir as basic elements.
Orff's work often grew out of a combined vision of the scenic and the musical - everything he created reveals a lush, visible imagination. Most of what he produced is intended for the stage, including Carmina burana. But the piece has shown its strength even without stage arrangements and is just as often performed in the concert hall with great success.

The years around 1880 marked a turning point for Tchaikovsky. He had recovered from the worst consequences of his doomed marriage to his piano student Antonia, and was beginning to become famous as a composer. He did not actually want to travel to Italy, but his brother Anatol insisted and after a short visit to Paris, Tchaikovsky joined his brother in Rome in December 1879. He was pleasantly surprised by the exuberant carnival and was inspired by popular and folk music: "I want to compose something in the style of Glinka's Spanish fantasies," he wrote to his sponsor madame von Meck. Bach had used the term "capriccio" (capriccio) for some of his piano pieces. At that time it was more like a lively improvisation, but later the term came to denote music that is happy, folk and lively. And that is certainly true in Tchaikovsky's case. Capriccio Italien was such a success that his colleague Rimsky-Korsakov copied the idea a few years later in his Capriccio Espagnol.

Wilhelm Stenhammar was a brilliant pianist who played Beethoven and Mozart's concertos as a soloist, and he toured the whole country with piano recitals or as a chamber musician. He was also one of the foremost Swedish conductors of the time and as such director of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra for many years. In addition, he was a romantic composer with a classical and clear musical language. His two symphonies and piano concertos, the serenade for orchestra, choral works, string quartets, songs and piano pieces are among the most beloved Swedish standard repertoire. He was very self-critical, and after listening to his colleague and friend Jean Sibelius's second symphony, he no longer wanted to hear about his own first - and he waited decades before he dared to write his second.
The piece Reverenza has a peculiar background. "I want to write as beautifully about the South as only a Northerner can," Stenhammar wrote in a letter. He wants to write about "flutes and oboes that quintillate like thrushes," about "long, sucking string phrases," about "something at the same time sensual and spiritual, about the strong scent of flowers in pure, sunny air." He was in Florence when he began thinking about Serenade for orchestra in March 1907, which was completed in 1914. A brilliant movement of its own came to live a life of its own under the name Reverenza. It is now often played as a standalone piece, a kind of minuet pastiche, unless one chooses to let it ring in its original place during performances of the Serenade.

Richard Wagner (1813–1883)
Wesendonck Lieder
Fünf Gedichte von Mathilde Wesendonk
Der Engel · Stehe still · Im Treibhaus · Schmerzen · Träume
Richard Wagner only composed around twenty songs, including a handful in 1839–1842, when he tried in vain to win the hearts of Parisians. The next step was in 1857–1858: in political asylum in Zürich during his most revolutionary period, he simultaneously became involved in a passionate romance with Mathilde Wesendonck, the wife of a wealthy Swiss silk merchant. Wagner and his wife had a cottage on the family’s estate in the countryside. One thing is for certain: as a revolutionary, Wagner was guided more by artistic dreams than political convictions.
He worked on Tristan und Isolde and read his libretto for the opera to his lover. She was delighted and responded with her own poetry, which was infused with the same spirit. Wagner was captivated by her poems and set them to music. He composed Der Engel, Schmerzen and Träume in the winter of 1857. They were completed the following May.
In the first poem, she presents Wagner as the savior of art. He himself wrote on the sheet music for the sketches of the first act of Tristan: “To the angel who lifted me so high.” Love may have enchanted them, but in concrete terms, the work on Mathilde’s five poems contributed inspiration to Tristan. Material from Im Treibhaus (In the Greenhouse) was incorporated into the introduction to the third act. Schmerzen (Pain) begins with the same chord that also begins the second act, and Träume (Dreams) can be seen as an early version of the love duet in the same act.
