Symphony No. 4 E minor Op 98
Allegro non troppo
Andante moderato
Allegro giocoso
Allegro energico e passionato (Tema con variazioni)
Brahms himself conducted the first performance of the work. This took place in Meiningen on October 25, 1885, but was not an immediate success, even though Brahms once again composed melodically accurate and thoughtfully orchestrated music.
What made it all a bit dubious was that the music was not particularly easy to buy at all. The audience found too much melancholy and there was talk of autumn music. The simile is actually not so crazy at all, if you also consider that autumn is not only dark, but also has strong colors. It has been said that at this time Brahms was studying the ancient Greek tragedian Sophocles' drama Oedipus in detail, and possibly some of the moods from there have crept into the music.
Today, Brahms's Fourth Symphony has a high status. It is regarded as the crown of a very symphonic creation, and as the testament of a master. It is a deep, gentle and slightly resigned music with rare well-balanced form and character. And the finale has been especially admired with its eight-bar passacaglia theme presented by the brass in rigorously executed and artful variations.

In correspondence as well as a for Tchaikovsky unusual online commentary, both implicit and explicit connections between this fourth symphony and Beethoven's fifth, Symphony of Fate, are suggested. In Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony, it sometimes seems as if he is trying to bring everything together, both the absolute of the music and the programmatic, and this is already audible in the first movement's architectural use of the fanfare theme that surrounds the otherwise inserted classical sonata form. The structural thereby gets a certain programmatic design, but within the form, the motivic work is found and listen (!) here to how Tchaikovsky uses the orchestra as a design of the room. The sonorous qualities of the shift of instrumentation provide a for the time unusual, and for posterity remarkable, use of instrumentation as a form of variation, one in which the ear and the room, not the word, are supreme.
And it is here – in the alternation between rhythmic and instrumental variation – that the rhapsodic becomes increasingly apparent: the story the symphony portrays, regardless of whether it is with just the musical aspect or with an idea of ??an underlying narrative, takes on an increasingly clear sonorous garment in Tchaikovsky.
The second movement's simpler, more melancholic feeling, and the third movement's dance-like display of pizzicato shock may seem parenthetical after the weight of the first movement, but in miniature the connection between motivic processing and the exploration of space through orchestration is found here as well. Finally, in the fourth, bombastic, movement, everything ties together. The rhapsodic, in the folk-inspired melodies are modulated and thrown around in the orchestral clusters, and finally we are back in the fate theme, and the coda can triumphantly bring us home.

Ludwig van Beethoven's First Symphony, written in 1799-1800, is not a tentative attempt by some inexperienced and immature composer. No, Beethoven had long been known as one of the foremost pianists and improvisers of his time, and his compositions had already received considerable attention. He had managed to write two piano concertos, eleven piano sonatas and six string quartets - to name a few. But on the other hand, he was not as bold as he might have been in some of his chamber music works.
The critics nevertheless thought that the symphony was generally good and that it offered many novelties and "a whole world of ideas". "But too many wind instruments were used, so it sounded more like a brass band than an orchestra". 200 years later, we find the symphony both clear and concise, conventional and strongly related to the symphonies of Mozart and Haydn. But we also notice that there is something more here - a strong personal touch. The driving spirit is not borrowed, it is Beethoven's own signature.

The choir was founded in 1917 by cousins Elsa and Wilhelm Stenhammar. Elsa Stenhammar was one of the driving forces in turn-of-the-century choir life in Gothenburg and became the choir's first rehearser. On December 8, 1917, the choir debuted in Beethoven's Choir Fantasy with Wilhelm Stenhammar as soloist at the grand piano. As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program.
The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir has participated in concerts in, among other places, the Royal Albert Hall and Canterbury Cathedral in England, as well as participated with the Gothenburg Symphony in the annual music festival in the Canary Islands and on a tour to China.

Peter Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)
Symphony No. 6 Pathetique Op 74
Adagio;Allegro non troppo - Allegro con grazia - Allegro molto vivace - Finale:Adagio lamentoso
Few symphonies contain as many outbursts of emotion and sudden mood swings as Tchaikovsky's Sixth, with the telling title Pathétique ("passionate suffering"). It reflects his manic-depressive personality, he suffered throughout his life from crises and often struggled with illness and depression. Tchaikovsky's death in Saint Petersburg, just nine days after he conducted the premiere, also gave the work a tragic aura right from the start. It was even said that the music deliberately foreshadowed his own death, which occurred after he drank cholera-tainted water. Even today, musicologists disagree whether it was an accident or a forced suicide, to avoid public scandal as a homosexual.
Is the sixth symphony really a self-composed requiem? This theory is fueled by the "dark" key of B minor, which stands for great passion and tragedy, and by the unusual structure. The main motif that runs throughout the work consists of a plaintive, descending second interval. The gloomy character of the symphony is clear already in the first movement, with its slow, dark introduction. The second movement is reminiscent of Don José's flower aria from Bizet's opera Carmen, which Tchaikovsky greatly admired. Towards the end of the movement there is a chorale-like funeral march, and even a quote from the Russian Orthodox funeral liturgy. The second movement provides some lightening, and Tchaikovsky wrote it in an elegant 5/4 time signature, which is a fairly common time signature in Russian folk music. The "limping" character makes the movement almost humorous, despite the loving waltz or minuet-like style.
In the third movement he returns to the march as idea, but it begins as an cheerful scherzo that gradually unfolds in its full life-affirming power. The fourth movement is the most famous in the symphony, and is partly reminiscent of a mournful requiem. The main theme is characterized by sighing motifs, and at the end the music fades into a low string chord in B minor.
Tchaikovsky considered the symphony to be his most important, most personal composition, but the premiere was received cautiously.
The Gothenburg Symphony was formed in 1905 and today consists of 109 musicians. The orchestra's base is Gothenburg Concert Hall at Götaplatsen that has gathered music lovers since 1935. Since the 2019-2020 season, Barbara Hannigan is Principal guest conductor. We are also a proud partner of Barbara Hannigan's Equilibrium mentoring program focusing on young singers at the start of their careers. The title Principal Guest Conductor is shared by Pekka Kuusisto from 2025.
Wilhelm Stenhammar was the orchestra's chief conductor from 1907 to 1922. He gave the orchestra a strong Nordic profile and invited colleagues Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius to the orchestra. Under the direction of conductor Neeme Järvi from 1982-2004, the orchestra made a series of international tours as well as a hundred disc recordings and established themselves among Europe's leading orchestras. In 1996, the Swedish Riksdag appointed the Gothenburg Symphony as Sweden's National Orchestra.
In recent decades, the orchestra has had prominent chief conductors such as Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Mario Venzago and Gustavo Dudamel, following Kent Nagano as Principal Guest conductor. Anna-Karin Larsson is CEO and artistic director, Gustavo Dudamel honorary conductor and Neeme Järvi chief conductor emeritus. The orchestra's owner is the Västra Götaland Region.

Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
Oboe Concerto
The oboe is often described as the most song-like of all instruments, something that is easy to understand when listening to Haydn’s Oboe Concerto – a work that is as beautiful as it is technically masterful, endowed with both passion and elegance. The Viennese classicist Joseph Haydn was a playful, stylistically confident and artistically innovative composer with an impressive list of works that encompass a wide spectrum of expression – from humor and irony to ambivalence and despair.
The Oboe Concerto, with its three movements – a lyrical Allegro spiritoso, an expressive Andante and a rhythmically captivating Rondo – is well in line with his musical language: spiritual motifs, surprising dynamics and elegant transitions. At the same time, the work’s origin has been questioned in recent years. The Oboe Concerto was first published in 1926, over a hundred years after Haydn’s death, and was then based on a 19th-century orchestral score to which Haydn’s name was added later. Regardless of the composer, the oboe's festive dance in dialogue with the orchestra is very pleasant to listen to.

Hugo Alfvén (1872-1960)
Suite from The Prodigal Son
With a music that can be said to be characterized by the musical aftermath of Romanticism, the composer and conductor Hugo Alfvén left his mark on Swedish musical life during the first half of the 20th century.
The ballet The Prodigal Son, or more precisely: the orchestral suite from it, would become Alfvén's last major composition. The ballet depicts the biblical story of the son who leaves his father, squanders his inheritance, but who then returns in repentance and through reconciliation is given a picture of what is genuinely human.
The music can be said to reflect this inner journey – we travel from the lyrical to the dramatic. From the youthful to the thoughtful of age. In between we hear evidence of Alfvén's soft spot for folk melody and the rhythmic danceable. Several of the melodies are also found in the many songs that Alfvén had arranged and composed for choir Orphei Drängar, which he over many years turned into the notorious male choir it still is today.
Maurice Ravel (1875-1937)
Suite No 2 from Daphnis et Chloé
It is difficult to capture this orchestral suite in a few words, which after more than 100 years strikes an audience with enormous richness of color and virtuosity. A music that is only remarkable at the time of its creation. 1913 is the year that Stravinsky's Rite of Spring is played for the first time, and Anton Webern's 6 orchestral works are performed in Vienna. Two concerts whose musical revolution was for a long time overshadowed by the scuffles that arose during the concerts.
Ravel's suite was already embraced during the composer's lifetime, but its musical revolution in harmony and orchestration is no lesser. This suite, which is part of a ballet set to the Greek tale of Daphnis and Chloé, to which Diaghilev's famous dance company danced, bears all the characteristics that made Ravel's music immortal.
The examples are countless, but the level of subtle genius is present already in the opening of the work, when the sun rises in the impressionistic orchestral scree. Not least listen to how this is embodied in the string section. The timbre, which is like a fund for the moving wind motifs, is in fact the sunrise's most sonorous transformation; how the strings in a slow procession during the opening bars raise the chords, from desk to desk, from section to section, and in that way - sifted through the sound of the strings - sweetly let the overtones from the strings go from the dark to the clear.

At the very first performance of the German composer Max Bruch’s final version in 1868, the audience embraced the work at once. Bruch’s thoughtful approach to instrumentation allows both soloist and orchestra to shine – their interplay flows with melodic richness and expressive warmth.
Like Felix Mendelssohn, Max Bruch was a musical prodigy. He wrote his first symphony and a string quartet at the age of fourteen. Yet it must have been a strange fate for a composer whose works were widely performed and admired to be celebrated, for the rest of his long life, almost exclusively for a single piece: the Violin Concerto in G minor. The world’s great violinists adored it, the public adored it, but Bruch eventually grew weary of players who wanted to perform only that concerto. Unfortunately, he had sold the rights to his publisher early on, meaning he received no income from the immense number of performances during his lifetime.
Bruch described the first movement as a prelude – a long one – which leads almost imperceptibly into the second movement. Like Mendelssohn, he lets the soloist enter swiftly rather than opening with the full orchestra. Here, inspired melodies unfold in dialogue with the orchestra, interrupted by two brief solo cadenzas. The violin begins the adagio with a nostalgic, heartfelt line, later followed by brilliant solo writing that avoids any hint of undue sentimentality. A short pause leads into an energetic allegro, where a Hungarian-inspired dance takes command, complete with virtuosic solo passages and a romantic theme that captivates and seduces.
