Dawn Sunday Morning Mooonlight Storm Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes, which premiered in 1945, is one of the most central works in British opera of the 20th century. It tells the story of a fisherman who causes the death of his apprentices, is harassed by the small town population and loses his mind. Between the acts, Britten inserted four orchestral interludes that can be performed as a standalone orchestral suite, the Four Sea Interludes. They are titled Dawn, Sunday Morning, Moonlight and Storm. The four interludes depict not only the nature outside the small coastal village where the opera is set, but also the psychological content of the opera and the title character's struggle against society and his inner demons. In Britten's music, the sea is both concrete and symbolic, a force of nature and a mirror for human loneliness, alienation and conflict – something that resonated deeply with him as a homosexual in a time of condemnation. With his sensitive tone language, Britten creates an atmospheric soundscape, and its rich, expansive music is reminiscent of Debussy's La Mer and Mahler's emotional moods. The interludes move between impressionistic colors and sharp drama, and show Britten's mastery in transforming the colors of the sea into expressive music of both beauty and anxiety. Haydn Variations Op 56 Like Beethoven, Brahms was very interested in the variation form and stands out as one of the foremost composers in this area. The theme for the Haydn variations is a chorale called St Antoni, followed by eight variations and a grand finale. A good friend of Brahms, Karl Ferdinand Pohl, had brought some unknown music to Brahms in 1870, including some scores or divertimenti for wind orchestra. One partita contained the Antonius Chorale, which Brahms fell in love with and noted in his sketchbook. At first it was believed to have been composed by Haydn, but researchers increasingly believe that it was possibly one of Haydn's students, probably Ignatz Pleyel, who composed the partita. The theme is based on a hymn that pilgrims used to sing on St. Anthony's Day. The Brahms work is available in two versions, one for two pianos and one for orchestra. Brahms entered the orchestral version in his catalog first, but it was the piano version that first appeared in print. The duo version was first performed by Brahms himself and Clara Schumann. The orchestral version was first performed in November 1873 by the Vienna Philharmonic under Brahms.

Albert Roussel (1869-1937) Symphony No 3 Albert Roussel was one of the foremost representatives of early 20th-century music in France, alongside Debussy and Ravel. He was originally a naval officer, but failing health meant that he had to go ashore at the age of 25. After returning home, he began studying music at the Schola Cantorum in Paris. He wrote his first opus-numbered works at the age of 30. They are not particularly personal, the influence is clear from both Debussy and D’Indy and César Franck. Only after a decade had the basic features developed into a style of expression that would become entirely his own. Roussel’s mature works differ considerably from Ravel’s and even more from Debussy. The breakthrough came in 1913 with the ballet pantomime The Spider’s Feast. The work was a great success, and was performed 22 times during the first year. More ballet music was added later, most fame clamed by Bacchus and Ariadne (1931). The musical language at that time was entirely personal with persistent rhythm, sometimes barbaric orchestral sounds and a rather advanced harmony for the time: fiercely dissonant or polytonal. The third of Roussel's four symphonies, composed in 1929-30, is rather classical in its structure. Each movement has its own themes, but three of them are linked together by a common motif: the falling rhythmic figure that is heard already in the first bar. The opening movement is completely dominated by its persistent stomping. In the slow second, the composer focuses on new aspects of the motif and builds up a long fugato. The work was commissioned by conductor Serge Koussevitsky for the Boston Symphony Orchestra's 50th anniversary. The premiere was given in October 1930, with Roussel present in the audience.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Symphony No. 5, Reformation Symphony No. 5 was written in 1831 and was on the verge of not having a premiere at all. The Paris Conservatoire orchestra did not think it was melodious enough and refused to play it. Mendelssohn also called it "a complete misfit". Instead, it premiered in Berlin the following year. The symphony was written to commemorate the Reformation and the first movement is based on the hymn Dresden Amen. Wagner would use the same melody in Parsifal. The second movement is a lively scherzo, while the third movement, marked Andante and in G minor, is mainly for the strings. The finale also quotes a hymn, the well-known Our God is a mighty fortress to us. At the end of the intense coda, Mendelssohn offers a final, loud variation of the chorale in which the entire orchestra joins in.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Symphony No. 4 Op 60 The Fourth Symphony is, as often said, situated between two symphonic giants. A reputation that has often led to its being overlooked, but in fact it follows a working method that is more the rule than the exception in Beethoven. The revolutionary works are often followed by music that seems to take care of what follows the storm. And this year, 1806 – we are in perhaps the most insanely productive of Beethoven’s life – is no exception. The symphony begins with a tender entry followed by a plateau of unison Bb in strings and winds that is shadowily surrounded by slow melodic movements. The music grows suggestively from a melancholy to a euphoria – from minor to major – when the allegro breaks through in all its splendor. After the first movement's alternating shift between intense outbursts and calm breaths, one of Beethoven's most lyrical adagios follows, where the repetitive rhythm (you hear it immediately in the verse) makes the movement dance forward stubbornly. In the third and fourth movements, a scherzo and an allegro, the music rushes forward. For those who have already noticed how the form of the adagio rhythm is a variation of the first movement's syncopated outbursts, here, in the more dance-like parts of the symphony, you can notice how Beethoven turns the building blocks of the music inside and outside, but at the same time joins them together. In this way, he lets us anticipate the revolution that the symphony's form is facing. Fate will soon be knocking on the door.

The last of Brahms' violin sonatas took two years to write and, unlike the two previous violin sonatas, is in four movements. The sonata is dedicated to Brahms' friend and colleague Hans von Bülow and was first performed in Budapest in 1888. In contrast to his lyrical and sunnier works, this sonata has a darker and stormier feel.

Lars-Erik Larsson (1908-1986) Pastoral Suite Overture - Romance - Scherzo Lars-Erik Larsson made his debut in Stockholm at the age of 20 and became one of Sweden's most popular composers. The Pastoral Suite was composed in the autumn of 1938 for the programme "Moments of the Day" on Swedish Radio, where Larsson was conductor. He originally wrote six movements, three of which have been retained in the suite. The overture has a slow introduction and a subsequent longer allegro in the composer's typical easygoing, rhythmically varied style. Then the romance, the most frequently performed movement, which is singable with great melodic beauty. Finally, a lively and graceful scherzo. The suite is scored for double woodwinds, two horns, two trumpets, timpani and strings, while the middle movement is for strings only.

Nachtmusik is German for "serenade", and when it was composed, Mozart had already composed twelve serenades. Compared to the earlier serenades, it truly lives up to its name - a little one. It becomes a miniature, a simple, classically pure and easily accessible trifle, in terms of scope. The earlier serenades could be 45 minutes long. A serenade should also be intended to be played outdoors, but that does not work at all with Eine kleine Nachtmusik with its lovely and intimate string music. Mozart included Eine kleine Nachtmusik in his own catalogue of compositions in Vienna on August 10, 1787, and listed it as having five movements. There was another minuet - but this movement disappeared early in the work's history and has never been found. It has also not been possible to find out why Mozart wrote this lovely entertainment music. In any case, it does not seem to have been a commission, but that he wrote music out of his own interest. It has been surprising that the mature master of cosmopolitan Vienna interrupted the demanding work of orchestrating the exciting nighttime moods of the opera Don Giovanni in favor of this delicacy. Was it the contrast he needed? Was the inspiration pressing?
