Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) Jubilate Deo in C In July 1934 Benjamin Britten, then 20 years old, composed a Te deum in C major for the choir of St Mark’s, North Audley Street, London. He followed it later the same year with a Jubilate in E flat, thereby completing the traditional pairing of Anglican canticles. However, the latter was never released. Almost three decades later, at the request of the Duke of Edinburgh, Britten made good his ‘omission’, producing the Jubilate in C major heard here. The sparseness of texture is typical of Britten’s later style. Voice parts are often in pairs—with hints of heterophony (divergent versions of the same melody), a feature of the eastern music Britten encountered during this period. Though the music’s tone is generally buoyant, some of the word-setting is reminiscent of Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms. ‘Be thankful unto him’, for example, is set not as a hymn of praise, but in a whisper over a long organ chord. In addition to his great Mass in B minor, Johann Sebastian Bach composed four shorter masses (BWV 233–236), usually called missae breves, or Lutheran masses. They include only the Kyrie and Gloria from the Ordinary of the Mass, which gives a playing time of about twenty minutes. The works are based on the reuse of earlier compositions with new text, and in all of these (with the exception of a single aria) the music is taken from older cantatas. The masses were probably composed in the years 1738–39, and were intended for liturgical use. It is possible that they were not intended for his hometown of Leipzig but were commissioned by the Bohemian Count Franz Anton von Sporck, who was in the social circle of Bach's aristocratic patrons in Dresden. The Mass in G minor (BWV 235) consists of six movements: a Kyrie followed by a five-movement Gloria, where two choral movements frame three solo arias. The music is mainly taken from some of Bach's earlier cantatas, the material of which has been skillfully adapted to the Latin text of the Mass. The work is written for four-part choir, soloists, strings and oboes, and combines powerful choral splendor with a more intimate and expressive soloist tone.

In Serenade for tenor, horn and strings from 1943, English poets from the 15th to 19th centuries contribute texts that revolve around the night. Six songs as both rest and threat. Two horn solos frame the work and the natural tones create with their – to the unaccustomed – almost false-sounding intervals, an ambivalent sound space between light and darkness. Clearly chiseled movements characterize the serenade. This applies to both the almost parading Nocturne and the more ghostly Dirge, with its trait of mechanical inexorability. Britten works sparingly, and often ties the motif to the horn, where a contrapuntal dialogue arises between horn and tenor soloist. The harmonics move freely, tension is created through shifts, not through traditional resolution. Perhaps the restraint and the mix of threat and hope are the composer's way of relating to the horrors that unfolded in the midst of a burning war. Such were the conditions when Britten wrote his work, in an England where the concept of night was synonymous with fearful anticipation of the rumble of approaching German bombers.

The Gothenburg Symphony was formed in 1905 and today consists of 109 musicians. The orchestra's base is Gothenburg Concert Hall at Götaplatsen that has gathered music lovers since 1935. Since the 2019-2020 season, Barbara Hannigan is Principal guest conductor. We are also a proud partner of Barbara Hannigan's Equilibrium mentoring program focusing on young singers at the start of their careers. The title Principal Guest Conductor is shared by Pekka Kuusisto from 2025. Wilhelm Stenhammar was the orchestra's chief conductor from 1907 to 1922. He gave the orchestra a strong Nordic profile and invited colleagues Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius to the orchestra. Under the direction of conductor Neeme Järvi from 1982-2004, the orchestra made a series of international tours as well as a hundred disc recordings and established themselves among Europe's leading orchestras. In 1996, the Swedish Riksdag appointed the Gothenburg Symphony as Sweden's National Orchestra. In recent decades, the orchestra has had prominent chief conductors such as Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Mario Venzago and Gustavo Dudamel, following Kent Nagano as Principal Guest conductor. Anna-Karin Larsson is CEO and artistic director, Gustavo Dudamel honorary conductor and Neeme Järvi chief conductor emeritus. The orchestra's owner is the Västra Götaland Region. The Gothenburg Symphony works regularly with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Joana Carneiro, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Christian Zacharias and Anja Bihlmaier.

The choir was founded in 1917 by cousins Elsa and Wilhelm Stenhammar. Elsa Stenhammar was one of the driving forces in turn-of-the-century choir life in Gothenburg and became the choir's first rehearser. On December 8, 1917, the choir debuted in Beethoven's Choir Fantasy with Wilhelm Stenhammar as soloist at the grand piano. As the country's oldest symphonic choir, they were able to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with a big celebratory concert where Mozart and Brahms as well as Stenhammar, Elfrida Andrée and Björn & Benny were on the program. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir is a non-profit association that is linked to the Gothenburg Symphony. The choir participates in concerts and performances under both the orchestra's and its own auspices. The music is mixed and the repertoire extensive. The Gothenburg Symphony Choir has participated in concerts in, among other places, the Royal Albert Hall and Canterbury Cathedral in England, as well as participated with the Gothenburg Symphony in the annual music festival in the Canary Islands and on a tour to China.

The ensemble works both as part of the Gothenburg Symphony Choir in major symphonic works performed together with the Gothenburg Symphony, and as an independent ensemble under the direction of Katie Thomas. GSVE is a group of experienced and versatile singers, who perform varied programs and explore a wide repertoire, from medieval music to newly commissioned works. The ensemble has previously collaborated with, among others, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra and the Barockakademin Göteborgs Symfoniker and performs regular vocal programs both in Gothenburg's Concert Hall and around the Västra Götaland region.

British Andrew Staples combines a busy schedule as an opera and concert singer with a career as a film and stage director and photographer. To all his creative output, Andrew brings a collaborative approach and a passion to tell better stories that build connections between artists and audiences. As a distinguished tenor, he has collaborated with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Harding, Emmanuelle Haïm, Elim Chan, Gustavo Dudamel, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Andrew Davis, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. He has worked with renowned orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, Les Siècles, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic and the LA Phil. Last season he did a European tour and participated in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos and Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, among others. He also performed Bach's St. Matthew Passion under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. Other highlights were Mendelssohn's Lobegesang with the Sinfonieorchester Basel and Bruckner's Mass No. 3 with the Wiener Symphoniker. His recent film productions include music films for Voces8, Choir of Trinity College Cambridge, Platoon (Apple) and Arcangelo. He directed a special performance of Stravinsky's The Firebird in a hangar at Charles de Gaulle Airport in collaboration with Arte, Daniel Harding and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Previous collaborations include Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time with Alice Sara Ott for DG Stage+ and a film adaptation of The Planets for the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Keiti Strömqvist is an Estonian mezzo-soprano based in Gothenburg. As a concert soloist she has performed in works such as Mozart's Requiem, Haydn's Nelson Mass, Handel's Messiah and Bach's St. John Passion, in collaboration with ensembles such as the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Karlsson Baroque and Borås Symphony Orchestra. On the opera stage she has performed roles such as Carmen in a modern interpretation of Carmen (Bizet/Luup) at the Estonian Opera Festival, Angelina in Rossini's La Cenerentola, Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro and a cameo as Auntie in Britten's Peter Grimes at the Gothenburg Opera. She is a member of the Gothenburg Symphony Vocal Ensemble. Keiti Strömqvist has performed at festivals and stages in Sweden, Denmark and Estonia and has a bachelor's degree from the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen.

Torbjörn Tällberg Martins has been employed by the Gothenburg Symphony Vocal Ensemble since 2016. He is also frequently hired as a soloist in church settings around Gothenburg and the surrounding area. He began singing at the age of seven in the Gothenburg Boys' Choir and is largely self-taught, supplemented by singing lessons from, among others, Maria Forsström. He has also been active in the Swedish Chamber Choir.

Lisa Ford is educated at the Interlochen Arts Academy. She has been a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and has a diploma from the Norwegian Academy of Music, NMH. She was previously assistant principal horn player in the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. She is also a certified professional coach.

Katie Thomas is a choral conductor from Wales and since 2023 the choirmaster of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. She is also the conductor and artistic director of the Gothenburg Symphony Vocal Ensemble. Previous engagements include nine years as a voice coach for the BBC Chorus, assignments as a guest choirmaster and conductor with the BBC Singers, MDR Rundfunkchor, National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and the Junior Royal College of Music, as well as a guest lecturer in choral conducting and director of the chamber choir at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Gothenburg. She has been a teacher of choral conducting techniques at the Association of British Choral Directors and a judge at choral festivals worldwide within the organization Interkultur. As a professional soprano, Katie Thomas has been engaged with the UK's leading choirs, such as the Monteverdi Choir under the direction of Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Polyphony and the Academy of Ancient Music. She has appeared in major concert venues in Europe and the USA, including the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Musikverein Vienna and Carnegie Hall in New York. Together with London Voices, she has recorded several soundtracks for films and video games, often at the renowned Abbey Road Studios, as well as concerts for both television and radio. Katie Thomas is a graduate of Cardiff University and the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 2020, she was appointed an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in the United Kingdom for outstanding contributions to professional music and significant achievements in conducting and choral music.

Juan Zurutuza is a pianist trained in Mexico and the Netherlands. He studied with Rian de Waal at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague from 2001-2008. He has played solo and chamber music concerts with members of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Scandinavia, Europe and North America. Since 2022, Juan Zurutuza is pianist in the Gothenburg Symphony. He is currently studying with pianist Robert Durso, thanks to several scholarships received from Göteborgs Symfoniker Friend Association, the Marianne & Ary Paley Scholarship Fund, the Eduard Magnus Music Fund and the Mary von Sydows Donation Fund.

During his studies at Juilliard, he had the privilege of collaborating with several internationally renowned musical figures, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma and composers Elliott Carter and John Cage.

Alongside his work in the orchestra, chamber music is close to his heart.

The last of Brahms' violin sonatas took two years to write and, unlike the two previous violin sonatas, is in four movements. The sonata is dedicated to Brahms' friend and colleague Hans von Bülow and was first performed in Budapest in 1888. In contrast to his lyrical and sunnier works, this sonata has a darker and stormier feel.

After winning a prize at a competition for young violinists in Gdansk, Poland, she continued her studies in Warsaw with Miroslaw Lawrynowicz. During her studies, she won prizes in several violin competitions. She also recorded Wieniawski's Etudes Caprices Op 10 and 18 for the Acte Préalable record label as a tribute to her teacher. She studied for a year at the Chopin University in Warsaw and then at Juilliard in New York, working with orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, often as assistant concertmaster. In 2014, she was appointed second concertmaster of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.

Camilla Lundberg is one of three lecturers in our series Classic Curiosity. As former music director at Swedish Television, Camilla Lundberg is well known to the audience. Today she works as a culture and music writer, reviewer and critic. She can be heard, among other things, in the Classical Podcast on Sveriges Radio and in the P2 program Musikrevyn. During the 1970s, 80s and 90s, Camilla Lundberg led music programs on Swedish Radio, mainly Opp, Amaryllis! between 1979 and 2004. She then became music director at SVT Kultur. She has published several anthologies and in 2018 was awarded the Medal for the Promotion of the Sound Arts.

Mårten Larsson was born in Örebro and trained at the Royal Academy of Music under Alf Nilsson. He has been a leading oboist in Sweden for many years and is solo oboist in the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. He has also been a member of the Stockholm Sinfonietta. Mårten Larsson teaches at the Gothenburg Academy of Music and Drama and has released albums with music by Johan Helmich Roman, JS Bach and Keith Jarrett, among others.

Sara Trobäck has been Principal concertmaster of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra since 2002. She studied with Tibor Fülep at the Gothenburg Academy of Music and with György Pauk at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In connection with her graduation concert in 2001, she received the academy's prestigious Professional Diploma and the Dove Award. Sara Trobäck has also participated in master classes with Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Ruggiero Ricci and Joshua Bell. As a soloist, she has appeared with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, the Stockholm Sinfonietta and the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, among others. In 2010, she premiered a violin concerto by Johannes Jansson dedicated to her and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Her London debut took place in the summer of 1999 when she performed Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with the London Soloists in St Martin-in-the-Fields. Sara Trobäck has also given concerts in Scotland, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal and China. In 2002 she formed Trio Poseidon together with solo cellist Claes Gunnarsson and pianist Per Lundberg. The trio has among other things recorded Beethoven's Triple Concerto. Sara Trobäck plays a Giovanni Battista Guadagnini on loan from the Järnåker Foundation.

Claes Gunnarsson has toured all over the world as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral musician and teacher. He made an early and acclaimed debut as soloist in Dvorák's Cello Concerto with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Shortly afterwards he was appointed principal cellist of the orchestra, a position he has held since 1999. As soloist, Claes has appeared in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, St. Petersburg Philharmonie, Shanghai Symphony Hall, Seoul Arts Center and Singapore Symphony Hall. He has also appeared at leading international festivals such as La Folle Journée in Nantes, Music@Menlo in California, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Affinis in Japan, Yuri Temirkanov's Winter Festival in St. Petersburg and the Qingdao International Cello Festival. Conductors he has collaborated with include Neeme Järvi, Kent Nagano, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Alexander Lazarev, Christian Zacharias and Christopher Warren-Green. As a chamber musician, Claes has collaborated with prominent musicians such as Leonidas Kavakos, Nikolaj Znaider, Christian Zacharias and Hélène Grimaud. Of particular significance is his nearly 25-year collaboration with violinist Sara Trobäck and pianist Per Lundberg in the piano trio Trio Poseidon. The trio has toured extensively both nationally and internationally and made a critically acclaimed recording of Beethoven's Triple Concerto and Brahms' Double Concerto together with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Neeme Järvi for Chandos Records. For Chandos Records, he has also recorded Weinberg's Cello Fantasy and Cello Concerto together with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Thord Svedlund. The recording of the cello concerto was awarded the Diapason d'Or award. He is also represented on BIS Records with the premiere recording of Albert Schnelzer's cello concerto. Claes is regularly invited as a guest solo cellist with, among others, the Oslo Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra. In parallel with his concert performances, he is active as a teacher at the Academy of Drama and Music at the University of Gothenburg. Claes plays a cello built in 1707 by David Tecchler, generously on loan from the Järnåker Foundation.

She studied for a year at the Chopin University in Warsaw and then at Juilliard in New York, working with orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, often as assistant concertmaster. In 2014, she was appointed second concertmaster of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.

Urban Claesson is principal clarinetist in the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra since 1995. He joined the orchestra in 1986 and has appeared as a soloist with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra on around 20 occasions, including Mozart's Clarinet Concerto and Sinfonia concertante for wind instruments, Bruch's Concerto for Clarinet, Viola and Orchestra and Corigliano's Clarinet Concerto. Edward Gardner is principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and music director of the Norwegian Opera National Opera and Ballet since 2024. He was principal conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra from 2015-2024. In his first season, Gardner has led the Norwegian Opera in The Flying Dutchman, Mahler's Symphony No. 2, Verdi's La Traviata and Janácek's The Cunning Little Vixen. With the London Philharmonic, he performs nine concerts at the Royal Festival Hall as well as a US tour culminating in Carnegie Hall and major European cities, including Vienna, Frankfurt and Hamburg. Richard Strauss wrote his last opera in 1940-41 in the midst of the raging war. The libretto was written by his friend Clemens Krauss, but the idea originally came from the author Stefan Zweig. Perhaps he wanted to write an opera with content that defied the barbarity that was going on around him. If civilized people could converse, why not countries too? And it must have been provocative for those in power that the opera discusses the quality of Couperin's and Rameau's music. The story takes place around 1775 at a castle in the Paris area. A group has gathered to celebrate Countess Madeleine's birthday. As a newly widowed woman, she is courted by the composer Flamand and the poet Olivier. She is torn between which of them to choose. The two are left to embody the question of which art form comes first, music or literature, a question that can also be said to be the theme of the opera. The sextet, which serves as an overture, is composed by Flamand in the opera as a love gift to the countess. The style of the work, however, is neither rococo nor modernism. Instead, it contains much of the atmosphere that characterizes Strauss's own late-Romantic style before the turn of the century.

Claes Gunnarsson has toured all over the world as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral musician and teacher. He made an early and acclaimed debut as soloist in Dvorák's Cello Concerto with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Shortly afterwards he was appointed principal cellist of the orchestra, a position he has held since 1999. As soloist, Claes has appeared in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, St. Petersburg Philharmonie, Shanghai Symphony Hall, Seoul Arts Center and Singapore Symphony Hall. He has also appeared at leading international festivals such as La Folle Journée in Nantes, Music@Menlo in California, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Affinis in Japan, Yuri Temirkanov's Winter Festival in St. Petersburg and the Qingdao International Cello Festival. In connection with her graduation concert in 2001, she received the academy's prestigious Professional Diploma and the Dove Award. As a soloist, she has appeared with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, the Stockholm Sinfonietta and the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, among others. In 2010, she premiered a violin concerto by Johannes Jansson dedicated to her and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Her London debut took place in the summer of 1999 when she performed Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with the London Soloists in St Martin-in-the-Fields.
